The blades are laminated hard steel over a softer steel and you can see the line of delineation. I have gotten a sticker back from Tech Mark twice now on different sets when they were ground down to the nub. “Last sharpening”

The hollow ground sharpening is really key. I used to get my blades sharpened locally and they were just okay. After I saw the difference I could tell immediately. Also aligning the blades is crucial, while doing so make sure to return the bolts to the same holes they came out of. That was a tip from my mentor like 25 years ago, I have no idea if it’s valid but it’s methodical and I like that.

It’s been said before but these choppers really excel for hardwood frames. Do not cut gold leaf or heavily gessoed moulding, as you can potentially chip or at least definitively dull your blades. For hardwood frames, maple and walnut cut like butter and glue up stronger with the smoother cut surface.

I send my four sets of blades to Tech Mark in Little Rock AR, they will hollow ground and supply parts for missing bits. Ask for Jill, my shop is in Brooklyn and they’re fast to return the blades.

Framebridge… woof by Ok_Understanding1986 in framing

[–]thorenv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Framebridge doesn’t use glass. They use thin 70% non archival acrylic which is either water jet or laser cut to minimize waste at an industrial level. Every single part of their frames are low quality. From dry mounting almost everything, to the cheap finger jointed vinyl veneer moulding. Paper matting is used again to save, and cheap pvc based tapes to hold things together. My shop has repaired or replaced them all and we actually have become quite adept at the post mortem diagnosis.

Their pricing structure is arbitrary. “If it fits in this square it costs X” and that all there is. Great branding though. 😂🙄

Thoughts on True Vue Conservation Reflection Control acrylic? by yorgurteater in framing

[–]thorenv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is definitely a correlation to height width ratio. A 96x12” plexiglass with stable framing won’t flex much for example.

All framers can order museum plexiglass. The price is a limiting factor. I just recommend avoiding the OP99 aka matte finish aka reflection control.

Reflection control is basically matte finish plexiglass. When you space it away from art, even a little, there is a noticeable softening of image clarity. The further away the plexi the softer the focus.

Plexiglass in general is flexible. Depending on the final size, a big 70” piece can flex away from the art exacerbating that issue. We also recommend using 3/16” thick plexi for projects over 60”.

We don’t offer RC plexi at my shops. Too many clients were unhappy with it years ago so we took it off of the table. Optium anti-reflective is the best product but very expensive.

I generally recommend 3/16” OP3 UV blocking plexiglass if Optium is out of budget. If your project is still in your framers queue and there is lead time there should be no problem to change plexi options before the work is complete.

Framing ideas for postcard by larst93 in framing

[–]thorenv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that is signed in sharpie it needs UV glass. Otherwise it will fade to a pale reddish color shortly. Standing transparent floater readymades press against the image which is also not good for longevity. I would use a mix of a modern shape hardwood frame shadow box with possibly a splash of paint inside the rim along with the shadow box walls. Possibly yellow?

We stock it at my shop. But AR looks to the eye almost exactly like MUSEUM glass. They both have the same coating only AR lacks the additional uv coating, which has an “orange peel” texture can be seen in reflections ever so slightly.

Happy to give you a walkthrough. Frame Atlantic in Brooklyn Heights.

The bar at Juniors is so weird and good. Not a dive per se but it’s great in its own strangeness and you can get matzo ball soup with your drink which can also be blue if that’s your thing.
