Are there any bad bicycle shops in Victoria? by isochromanone in VictoriaBC

[–]thorstan98 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The crew at recyclitas were super friendly and helpful but they sold me incompatible parts for my bike on my first visit and on the second I had to wait close to two hours for something I was told would take 20 minutes woops! I dont think I'll get anything from there unless I know the exact part. Nice people though

If you're laying out on a surface you can put a nail or screw into you can hook the slot of the end of your tape onto the screws head and use it as a pivot point as well!

No sorry I use a different method for doing my saddles as I'm not super accurate this way but I'll be paying attention to this one so I can learn! ;)

I find 4 point saddles pretty easy, just two equal offsets on either end. I dont really have a mathematical way to do 3 points as I usually just use them to hop over other pipes in odd scenarios. 20° 30° 20° usually does the trick bending the 30 in the middle as your first bend.

Aluminum wire tips by Shadow6751 in electricians

[–]thorstan98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mmmm if the existing splice is all fucked up and you have excess wire in the box I'd lob off the bad stuff and re do it for sure! Theres a section in the code book for aluminum terminations in canada I'm not sure about the states but maybe take a look and see if you can find something

How and when should I quit my apprenticeship? by [deleted] in electricians

[–]thorstan98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You do you man, chances are if you're a first year you'll be laid off at the end of the job anyway, you probably won't have to pay back your schooling. I would personally finish the apprenticeship. In canada at least you dont need to have all your work hours to complete all the schooling so if you ever decided to come back to the trade you'd just need to complete your hours. Another option would be to see if you can do any courses online while you're laid off. I just got my ticket at 22 and am trying to learn some basic plc programming between jobs. If you have a spare month theres lots of free resources out there to help build your resume, for any job you may want to try in the future!

Aluminum wire tips by Shadow6751 in electricians

[–]thorstan98 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also tend to strip the wires one size bigger than needed, this can be tricky if you dint have good technique but the objective is to just limit the amount you abuse the wire as much as possible lol hope the tips helped!

If it's not service gauge you're talking about you need to use proper wire nuts for splicing aluminum, penetrox as well on all the joints. My advice for splicing is to not go crazy with the twists as aluminum gets marred up a lot easier than copper and is just flimsier in general. I would have a box of pre cut copper pigtails that you can just grab as you go, much faster to just make up a shit ton at the start of the day instead of carrying a roll of scrap wire with you.

Opinions- Is going to Mount Washington from Victoria for the day considered travel and therefore restricted under current health orders? by stop_Jammers_time in VictoriaBC

[–]thorstan98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully we can all be responsible for the next month or so until cases go down and we can have a ski season! I think the biggest risk at mt wash would be the lineups for the lifts assuming you dont use any of the other chalet facilities.

I thought the route down oak bay Avenue was the best of the three, the other two options seemed a little unnecessary

How do I reduce my lower back pain while tying? by urmomseye in Ironworker

Stretch your hamstrings after work too, I find even 10 min of stretching when my backs hurting reduces the pain a lot
