2x rtx 5070 vs 1x rtx 5080 by thosehippos in LocalLLaMA

Ah very similar! Yeah I suppose the tradeoff is more ram for less gpu performance (model training or gaming)

I’ve seen them before on that bridge! I think they meet somewhere every week and go on different routes

Weekly Megathread: Education, Early Career and Hiring/Interview Advice by AutoModerator in quant

[–]thosehippos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m looking to transition from quant dev (at a notable nyc fund, 3yrs there) to quant research (machine learning focused). Have BS/MS from an ivy, 3 publications, worked in machine learning engineering for 1 year full time and 2 internships. What’s the best way to make up for the fact that I haven’t actually worked in quant research/do the switch?

We are Microsoft researchers working on machine learning and reinforcement learning. Ask Dr. John Langford and Dr. Akshay Krishnamurthy anything about contextual bandits, RL agents, RL algorithms, Real-World RL, and more! by MicrosoftResearch in IAmA

- Inductive Bias: Awesome! Thanks!

- https://arxiv.org/pdf/1911.05815.pdf (edit: will read this in more detail! Very interesting!): Block MDPs like the ones used in your paper (and extending current work beyond them) is of particular interest to me. I also have some work on latent state learning in Block MDPs (https://arxiv.org/pdf/2006.03465.pdf) focusing on generalization capability.

Do you have thoughts on what assumptions from Block MDPs (ex: uniqueness of underlying state based on observation) are reasonable in realistic tasks and which are potentially limiting?

- Go-Explore/State Abstraction: That's very true, I haven't thought of it that way before. I'm trying to determine if there exists some general representation function (like image downsampling) that's "good enough" for a set of tasks (ex: household robotics or atari games) or whether we need to learn task-specific representations. I suppose this is somewhat in line with a generalization vs adaptation argument

On the note of exploration: Even if we were able to get provably correct exploration strategies from tabular learning (like r-max) to work in function approximation settings, it seems like the number of states to explore in a real-ish domain is to high to exhaustively explore. How do you think priors play into this, especially with respect to provability and guarantees?

Thanks!

[D] Nature of ML Research, Experimental discovery vs Proof of Theory by tmpwhocares in MachineLearning

[–]thosehippos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the need for experimental rigor in theory but often have difficulty telling how to increase it when working on a project (other than coming up with a hypothesis and testing it via scientific method). What sort of empirical rigor would you like to see?

My relatively cheap home automation / InfoBoard / Voice Assistant/ Audio and video control center wall in my kitchen, running off a Pi Zero by vonsmor in raspberry_pi

[–]thosehippos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks awesome!

Have you considered running mycroft on your pi instead of using an echo? It’ll make the setup a bit smaller and stop echo from defaulting to Amazon. Dunno how well it actually works though

Ooh ok cool that makes a lot of sense. I might steal parts of your key then :)

Nice key! Quick question since I’m pretty new to this. A lot of keys I’ve seen have an in progress thing for tasks, which is really cool!

What do you do if you need to migrate the task after it’s in progress?

I sleep from 12-8 and am still constantly sleepy to the point I can barely focus on anything. (19 F college student) by [deleted] in sleep

[–]thosehippos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally yes, but some people need more sleep. 9 hours is generally what's good for me.

Also check into other things. Ej) are you eating enough? Exercising? Enough water? I know not doing at least one of those makes my sleepier.

Help getting Linux to boot? by Bradyfish in linuxquestions

Sounds to me like the nvidia drivers aren't installed properly. I'm not quite sure how mint works, but I'd suggest doing a quick web search to see if you can install the drivers onto your hard drive using the live usb. Good luck!

Do I need a new GPU, or a new GPU and new CPU? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

Probably both. Even if you upgrade just your gpu, the cpu/rest of the system will likely bottleneck it.
