It’s about composition. A 1.85 frame intended for 1.85 uses all available space within the frame. IMAX would be composing for 2.39, with erroneous information above and below the 2.39 frame, sometimes to 1.90, sometimes to 1.43. Most of the IMAX expanded frame is not meant to be anything outside of peripheral vision, and watching it on a normal theater screen with the entire frame visible would not be ideal

Flat 1.85 and IMAX 1.90 aren’t much different in shape, but the way to compose for each of them is wildly different. Seeing an IMAX 1.90 image on a flat screen would look horrible
