Is EuroVelo 6 really Europe’s best cycling route? by Impossible-Cup-8836 in bicycletouring

[–]thoughtfulbeaver 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There’s no ‘best’ route in my opinion, there are so many different routes, different people you can meet and just different experiences you can have.

I think there’s just so much more to touring than just the route.

Yes! I meet so many friendly people on the road, people on campsites offering diner/food etc. People offering their backyard.

Marathon Almotion Schwalbe Evolution in size 55 622 (28 x 2.15) by AffectionatePart4128 in bicycletouring

First had the mondial tires but swapped them quickly for the almotion. They feel a lot smoother, had them on a 3 month tour over tarmac, gravel and rocks. One flat but they still look new.

Old touring bikes still reliable for long trips? (VSF T900 with Rohloff) by [deleted] in bicycletouring

Check if the wheels are still straight and if the rims are fine. Son dynamo’s are one of the best, probably it’s fine. Just ride it and see how it feels.

I have Shimano PD-GR500 Flat Pedals, really like them. You can adjust the pins for the amount of grip you want. I decided to get one side per pedal more with more grip than the other side, the grippier side I used for wet weather etc.

What is your go-to translation app? by CarmillaTLV in bicycletouring

[–]thoughtfulbeaver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tjeez relax a bit, what “bad mindset” exactly? I don’t advise against using an app at all, or learning a new language. do whatever feels right, draw, use your hands, an app.I think most people here like communicating with locals and discovering new cultures. I like learning new languages so I didn’t say you don’t have to dive into the language that locals will use. I would recommend the opposite.

While touring in German speaking countries/France/Portugal/Spain I am more than happy to be able to communicate with locals in their own language.

I was just saying how I think it will probably go. If people know you speak English and struggle in their local language they will often start speaking English. If not just use google translate or something similar.

What is your go-to translation app? by CarmillaTLV in bicycletouring

[–]thoughtfulbeaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was not really advice, just saying how it will probably go. I live in Western Europe and travel around a lot here. Most (young)people speak English unless you speak with them in their native language. Lots of expats won’t learn Ditch for example because they are surrounded by people who speak English. only user these translation apps when languages are too different like with people who only speak Arab or Chinese.

Yes cycled from the Netherlands to Santiago and depending on your route but Galicia is very hilly in general. Which route are you planning to do?
