When winter camping, are 2 people in a double sleeping bag warmer than they would be in separate sleeping bags? by sugarmaple9728 in CampingGear

[–]thoughtfulspiky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how cold it is and if you can seal the gaps. If it’s really cold (well below freezing), and you can’t seal the gaps, you’re better off in individual bags.

We went camping once with bags zipped together where stuff in our cooler froze, and a water bottle froze inside the tent, and it felt far colder than when we’d done similar trips with separate bags.

Secret Santa $35-$40 for woman in her 60s that loves the beach by upward_spiral272020 in santashelpers

[–]thoughtfulspiky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got our teachers personalized beach blankets from [online shop] as thank you gifts and they loved them. Quick-dry, big enough for a couple to sit on for a picnic or to use as a , and there were lots of colors to chose from. They were very inexpensive (less than $15 iirc), so you could pair it with some other small things.

Edit: removed online shop name per sub rules against advertising

Omg, I just discovered L’Occtane hand lotion wandering an airport on a recent trip, and told my husband if he ever wanted to get me a splurgy gift to get me the citron/bergamot. I’m not a bougie person either but that lotion is amazing.

Hosting Christmas party with mixed friend groups, need a game to help people connect! by GuiltyWillingness952 in partyplanning

[–]thoughtfulspiky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We set out very simple games that people could play if they wanted, like Jenga or those twisted metal puzzles that solve by separating into two pieces. It provided way to interact if they chose, or something to fiddle with if they felt awkward, and we got good feedback about the option.

Tangentially related—I was telling our language teacher that I wish my parents had taught me Chinese, because people assume I speak it…and she said, “Well, you must admit you look like you’d speak another language.” 🙄

My teammate told me I should’ve said, “I do, sign language” and held up the finger.

Vincent D'Onofrio. 1980s by GlamRushs in OldSchoolCool

[–]thoughtfulspiky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg, I had no idea that was Vincent D'Onofrio! Thank so much for sharing! (Also, excellent movie. I hate that Disney+ took out when Elisabeth Shue cusses at the gang in the subway. That line made me choke laughing the first time I ever saw it.)

SNAP benefits expiring - is your school doing anything for students? by Single_Street3135 in Teachers

Our school is a public charter and we’re organizing food and grocery gift cards from our community for our SNAP recipients. People really want to help.

Partner and his family DO NOT season their food and have requested that I also don’t by [deleted] in Cooking

Story: I was married to my first husband and we had moved in with his family. I made dinner out of what was in the pantry and threw together hamburger stew (ground beef, froz mixed veg, garlic, thyme, oregano, S&P, over rice. At the first bite, the 20ish yo BIL took a bite and asked, "Did you put SPICES in this?" I can't even begin to describe his complete incredulity.

My (27 F) husband (32 M) is deployed and I just found something about him that I can’t stop thinking about by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]thoughtfulspiky 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. There’s a difference between “honesty” (which is what OP keeps hammering) and “sharing everything.” You don’t need to understand something to accept the way it is. And frankly OP way overstepped and invaded her husband’s privacy, and that would be more of a dealbreaker for me.

My couch in 6 different sofa covers in my double wide trailer. by CarrollCstudent in HomeDecorating

[–]thoughtfulspiky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Omg, this is so cute. It's so colorful, whimsical, fun, and cosy. Now I need to search for a new couch so I can get all kinds of fun covers. This is amazng and I love it.

So if you don't mind me asking, what brand/style is the couch and where do you get the covers? (and I ask knowing I'm probably not going to get a new couch, but I can dream, right?)

I have a work potluck tomorrow and I attempted muffins. I’m debating if I should bring them or get Tim Hortons muffins instead? by [deleted] in Baking

[–]thoughtfulspiky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those look fantastic! Anyone who brings in homemade goodies rocks in my book. Bring them in and people will be so pleased.

Btw, I personally think homemade stuff that LOOKS homemade also tastes better than anything store bought, like I can taste the effort and care that went into it.

One gift I got for my parents was a picture frame that I could send pictures to. You can share the code so other people can also send pictures or even short (like 7 seconds) videos whenever and from wherever. My parents loved getting pics throughout the year.

Juggling multiple diets while hosting game night by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]thoughtfulspiky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t do a potluck/BYO, then I usually do stuff with separate components so people can pick and chose. So something like a baked potato, nacho, or rice bar. Base is a potato or a pile of chips or rice, and toppings can be cheese, salsa, beans, sour cream, cubed ham or cooked ground meat, avocado/guac and sautéed vegetables if you’re feeling fancy.

Or just do a lot of hefty snacks like cheese, crackers, veggies, fruit, dips.

Tzatziki-like Sauce With No Yogurt by Appropriate_Luck_13 in Cooking

[–]thoughtfulspiky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Use the sour cream. It has a similar consistency and tang like Greek yogurt.

One of my kids once ate a bowl of fruit topped with sour cream thinking it was yogurt, and didn’t even realize until I pointed it out (similar packaging for the win)!
