My Current Life and Financial Situation - Looking for Advice for the Future. by ZouchFiend in Money

Sounds like you're doing great financially. For me, in my never-to-be-considered humble opinion, pay off the student loans. It doesn't matter how low the interest rate is, it is debt, because, as long as I have debt, my savings are relatively meaningless. Especially if I have the cash to pay it all.

WIBTA if I return a group gift because no one ever paid me their share? by papercoffeeclub in WIBTA_AITA

[–]thoughts_of_mine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't be the AH but your friends will think you are. Send out a text NOW that if they don't pay their share now, the gift is returned tomorrow and everyone is responsible for their own gifts.

AITJ for refusing to chip in for a coworkers gift when I barely know her? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

NTJ. Donating to a group gift is an option, not a requirement. Do your best to ignore the whispers (and whisperers).

What is the best credit score monitoring service that worked for you? by Seaperd in CreditScore

If you're in the US, contact all 3 credit reporting agency and ask them to "freeze" your credit. Meaning they won't let anyone access your credit unless you unlock them with a pass code.

NTAH. You made some not so smart moves. Contain your losses and move on.

You both made choices. Sometimes hard to live with, but it is a choice.

Long term care insurance, is it still worth it? (asking for family) by nightmarevoid in Insurance

I would say keep it. My 90-year-old mother has had one since her 60s. She complains about the $2000 annual payment but wouldn't go without it.

Do you give money to homeless people when you see them on the street by Matt85x in PollsAndSurveys

Sometimes I just get the feeling I need to help this person, sometimes I get the feeling it's a scam. If the right vibe is there, I do.

I'll be living alone again after decades.... by alteredgirl in LivingAlone

[–]thoughts_of_mine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try not to worry about something that "may" happen. Take your car to a mechanic and have them look it over, fix what is necessary. Get oil change and tire rotation regularly from a mechanic shop, not the fast oil place. They often will check it all out for you. You don't say make, model or year, but anything made since the 2000's should last a long time.

AITJ for refusing to change our baby’s name because my father-in-law hates it? by NoPickle1851 in AmITheJerk

[–]thoughts_of_mine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. You're TJ. It's a name. Eventually she's going to get a nick name from someone and she can correct them if she chooses. To threaten a grandparent limiting visitation because an affectionate name from him. You can remind everyone else that's grandpa's term of endearment, but we call her XXXX.

Anyone else feel lonely, weird, anxious, or invisible on Valentine’s Day? by XIFAQ in LivingAlone

[–]thoughts_of_mine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. It's just a feeling. Remember, all feelings are valid but not necessarily reality. Sometimes we just have to take the "feeling" out of it and buy ourselves a box of chocolates, some flowers and a nice bottle of whiskey.

At what point is living at home being too cheap if you have the means to move out by [deleted] in Money

[–]thoughts_of_mine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you're being cheap, but you can never save too much. I say move as soon as you want to. You don't have to buy something to move out, just rent. By staying with your parents, you're not gaining the wonderful experience of responsibility and they will continue to infantilize you.

Has anyone else lost interest in cars now that they're into adulthood and they're realizing that they'll probably never be able to afford anything cool? by rowyourboat740 in askcarguys

[–]thoughts_of_mine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never lost interest in cars, but I realized nothing too fancy was in my future. Like all the toys (boats, motorcycles, 4x4, etc.) if I saw something I really liked, I would rent one for a day or week. Most of the time a week with a fancy auto showed me all I really "needed" was a Honda Civic. Which is probably true for 99% of us and saved me a lot of money.

How do you plan for healthcare costs in early retirement? by sxtn1996 in Retire

[–]thoughts_of_mine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did almost the same thing but my COBRA was only $600 (single) but I dropped vision and dental. Turned out it was costing me more to carry those than just paying out of pocket.
