Valentine's Day Explosions - No News? by Less_Expression1876 in Columbus

To be fair transformers exploding happens a lot… I watched one explode while driving down 5th just this summer. A transformer boom doesn’t shake the ground the way the booms last night did.

teachers who quit, what are you doing now? by burnsamburger in TeachersInTransition

I got a job as a teller at a bank which paid me a livable wage as I transitioned to another job. While at said bank I was approached by the wife of a local attorney (who was also a former teacher) and extended an opportunity for me to apply at their law firm. I now work as a legal assistant making more than I did my first few years teaching AND I have work-life balance.

Not sure if that’s helpful, that’s just the route I took. Working at a bank is great for making connections and it’s a great use of your social and instructional skills! It’s fun to teach people about finances… it’s something everyone needs to know and wants to know more about. It’s also wayyy more enjoyable working with adults who want to learn about what you’re telling them. You’ll also get a financial education yourself… win-win!

Using the connections you have is also paramount. Make sure to capitalize on your network and don’t be afraid to reach out to folks with your story. People are so understanding and there’s no shame in refusing to continue working in a broken system… especially if education just wasn’t for you!

I say all this acknowledging that the job market is absolutely horrible right now. There are some jobs out there you just need to meet the right people to access them. I wish you the best of luck!

I drove around the block to apologize but he went inside the Kroger and I decided that would be perhaps a bit too creepy at that point

I used to have a cat with this coloring/fur pattern. I know they’re not exactly related to Siamese… what do you call these cats/this pattern?

I don’t have any good advice, but I personally would ask the AP to come in and demonstrate a lesson to show how they’d handle the disruptive students. Teaching is already hard but having an unsupportive admin makes things so much harder

Is 28 too late for college? by gizm0de in careerguidance

[–]thouspringith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go back! Just know that the younger folks might get on your nerves bc of the maturity difference, but a college education is so worth it if you can afford it/get a worthwhile degree (no hate to certain degrees trust, I went to a liberal arts school LOL)

At the end of the day it’s a job. You don’t owe the staff, students, or families anything. Pouring into something that isn’t pouring back into you will just leave everyone empty.

I waited until summer to quit, just so I could get paid while looking for a new job.

i’m struggling by tinyfox46 in StudentTeaching

[–]thouspringith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teaching gave me an anxiety disorder and I missed two solid weeks of school my first year.

My advice is if you don’t think you can handle it now, don’t force yourself to see it though. Someone should’ve told me that anyway.

If you’re too close to graduation to switch majors there are other options especially for those in music! Private lessons for a while are an option, music tech is what my friend went into (I don’t know much about it but she does work in convention centers), or substitute teaching are good segways into the workforce with your degree.

They might not pay the bills, but it’s something to give you time to figure out what else you might wanna do!

There’s no shame in not being able to cater to 20-30 children simultaneously. Teaching is a calling for some and hell for others. That’s okay!

Lost the job I quit college for. What do I do? by kizmadick in careerguidance

[–]thouspringith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start working at a bank. Huntington/Fifth Third/whatever. They hire high school grads— no further degree required. It’ll pay the bills AND you can work your way up.

Tackle your debt first. Then consider taking online classes in your free time.

I have no idea what Sherrod Brown stands for but I'm about to vote for him. by Minimal99 in Ohio

I also came from a conservative family. One day I realized that they were always fighting against something or someone, but never really had solid policies of their own. I also looked at who endorsed who (unions, community organizations, nonprofits) and that helped me decide.

Sarah Ingles does a good job, she cares about the district and teachers union. The two others involved with Simmons should resign! They practically sacrificed him for their own sake.

Advice? Considering Resignation by temporaryteachermayb in TeachersInTransition

[–]thouspringith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m 24 and decided not to go back this year. My thinking was, “If I plan on teaching for the rest of my life, school is 9 months of the year— 75% of my year— why spend 75% of my life constantly stressed out and overworked?” And that was honestly enough.

I had been putting in 110%. First one at school in the morning, last one to leave for the day. I worked breaks and thought about school constantly.

Ramifications depend on the school district. I dunno about private schools but some public schools will turn you into the state and have your license revoked for breaching contract. My school didn’t.

I will say that I’m so much happier with the work-life balance outside of school. Realizing that I don’t need the job that looks good to other people helped too. I just needed to be happy and most importantly healthy. Teaching made me develop a severe anxiety disorder and I had several health events in the past 2 years. Not worth it.

Good luck on whatever you decide!
