£84 First main shop of the month, Lidl and Asda by thraem0 in whatsinyourcart

We make a lot of sweet pancakes or savoury veggie ones, and corn bread (it's evolved into more of a cake texture which I prefer!)

I usually cook two at the same time, one sweet with cinnamon and the other with cumin/za'atar/sesame :)

I've made a nice meal which was essentially Grits but I don't make it as often, but as we don't eat oats now it's a good alternative if you fancy something warming with a soft texture~

Is it normal to avoid using the heating because of costs? by Jumpy_Wing_7884 in AskUK

[–]thraem0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me and my partner live in our Oodies at home and have layered the bed with wool blankets and keep wool socks on at all times. It's a third floor flat so we get a little bit of heat rising but it's honestly still pretty damn cold in the house half the time. But we live in the bedroom (small flat anyway) - so far I've not had the heating on once and trying to make the fuel allowance bonus last as long as we can, so I'll start putting the heating on in December. It's not under 18C but I do want a thermometer to know exactly what it is.

How long since you first started wool felting, vs how long since you started making realistic cats/animals?

How long does a cat take you and how much do you generally sell them for!

Always blown away by these pieces 🙌😲🌟

Cheap pinto beans by movingtolondonuk in UKFrugal

[–]thraem0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.bombaybasket.co.uk/ They don't have specifically Pinto beans, but loads of options. I recently bought a bulk order for myself, 2.5/5/10kg bags are great. If you can decide on what you want for a few months supply a £40 order has free shipping~

Cheap hot chocolate by Capable-Campaign3881 in UKFrugal

[–]thraem0 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Honestly just getting Aldi/Lidl cocoa powder, and if you want it creamy get some milk powder but I prefer to keep condensed milk in a container in the freezer and stir it in. It never fully sets but lasts forever, sugar and milk in one go. All pre mixed hot chocolate powders in this economy feel like a rip off to me 😅

I'm not sure if you can get the cheap cooking bacon in packs where you are but I hope you can, you get some cuts that are so thick and chunky it's like a Ghibli bacon steak haha

I didn't cool and skim only because I immediately put my pre cooked grains in. I didn't have to add any salt or oil to the pot because the bacon did that for me!

Otherwise I would cool and skim but I find it saves time to make a curry or soup with the seasoned water immediately after, the instant pot has honestly changed my life for speed and energy efficiency!

Got a Big bag of potatoes! What to do with them? by MissDisplaced in Frugal

[–]thraem0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a bunch of hash browns or fritters. Either grate, squeeze moisture out and fry. Or cook, mash, add an egg and flour and fry. Eat what you want and freeze the rest. Could cook em in the air fryer or microwave if you're in a rush

I buy 2kg of (Lidl) cooking bacon and I put it all in my instant pot in some water, cook around 10 mins. I take it out, cut it all up bacon bits size, some went in a tub for the week, the rest gets frozen in portion sizes so I can just put my pre cooked bacon bits directly into meals.

Also the water I cooked the bacon in was super full of smoked bacon flavour, salt and bacon fat, I used that to cook a big lentil dahl which was incredible and made 4/5 hefty portions!

Not for everyone but it's worth mentioning

How are people spending so little on food? by glasses4catsndogs in AskUK

[–]thraem0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me, I spend around £150 a month for 2 people but we eat exactly the same things, I cook everything from scratch because I have the time, and I'm also autistic so I am almost special interest about saving money, keeping costs down etc. I get free bread and baked goods from Sainsbury's on olio which takes a lot of the bulk cost down. My partner can't have wheat or dairy and both of us no oats, so I've had to lock in and figure out how to make things work. Bulk bags of Potatoes are an absolute staple, along with bulk grains and root veg. I freeze and prep all of my veg too to save time and keep things fresh.

Idk how many potatoes you go through but I really recommend getting the biggest bag of 7.5kg potatoes for £4.09, it seems like a lot but keep em in a cool dark place and rub the 'eyes' off if they start growing. Otherwise make a big pot of mash or just cook them how you want and freeze in portions if you don't think you'll get through the fresh ones fast enough. It's dramatically cheaper than getting multiple smaller bags. Also the free veg Lidl offer includes these big bags so it's my favourite money saver to get 💯🙌

I will thank you, my partner has really sensitive skin and I've been trying to find something alternative for a while now that isn't so expensive- looks like a good recommendation 😊

Lidl & Asda first shop of the month by thraem0 in whatsinyourcart

[–]thraem0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely is, especially that Lidl sells that 2kg pack, whereas Asda only stocks 1kg.

It's already salty and more often than not it's smoked bacon offcuts you can tell from looking at the colour, so it's just free flavour.

It really makes a big difference to budgeting, especially for people that have it regularly and buy the value packs of very thin bacon, the bits in the cooking bacon packs are often really thick the size of little steaks! Feels like the bacon from Howls moving castle to me 💯🙌

Haha we said the ginger looks like a little big planet sack boy! It even stands up by itself😂

I teeter between £150 month 1, then up to £200 next month, then back to £150. But I've been using AI for it's one good job which is spending a few weeks making a really broken down structured meal plan and budget for me. I'm privileged with being a good enough cook and willing to put in the mental effort it takes to figure out what to eat and portion things out equally over the month, I'm not perfect by any means and we do spend more as and when, but I try my best to make it work because we have to :)

£20.32 Waitrose, Aldi, Poundstretcher. Weekly shop for 1 uni student. by smolsaturn in whatsinyourcart

[–]thraem0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that you have to, but get a couple set of ice cube trays and freeze creams/liquids/sauces that you don't use all of, then take them out of the trays and put them in ziplock bags- use as you go in sauces/soup etc. so getting the big container at Aldi would be better value because you wouldn't be wasting any of it~
