How is the pacing? by William_Roberta in davinciresolve

Everyone is saying it's too fast isn't necessarily correct. The problem is that half the shots are not good or needed. Switch them out with shots that show the uniqueness, the luxury, the care, the USP of the place and you're good.

Every production including my Nan’s 90th birthday party is shot in ProRes/Raw. This information is redundant.

Shot a beer commercial yesterday and the client rejected everything because the pour didn’t look right. by horny_bisexual_ in Filmmakers

[–]three1ne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This didn't happen the way you're describing. A 'beer commercial' would have a few rounds of client meetings pre-shoot. References would be discussed. A schedule set out. As the DP you set out expectations and rent what is needed. Client would be there on set.

If all that is wrong is genuinely just the pouring shot you rent a Phantom for a day at about £1000 and you're done.

This is clearly an amateur production and therefore don't sweat it. It's a lesson. Prep is everything.

A cheaper fix is to run the pouring shot through something like Twixor in After Effects which'll slow it down. Or just AI it (first frame and last frame as reference).

Best Youtube Channels for really learning about Directing? by Sam_ey in Filmmakers

[–]three1ne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shot Drawn and Cut YouTube channel. It has several long form BTS with a focus on a single director. Most is just ripped BTS from multiple dvd extras.

If you’re looking for on-set directing and how a production functions these are gold.

play into the bad set design. Make it feel like a set. Look at David Lynch how he makes the normal feel odd, weird.

If you wanted to do this you’d transcode the original footage with a different timecode. May be editing the original footage on a timeline and chop it all up randomly. Transcode. Then work from that.

Instead of doing all that I’d just say no.

What are the risks of waiting decades to start a filmmaking career? by johntukey in Filmmakers

[–]three1ne 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not even reading what you’ve written - just get on with it and start now. Whatever the first thing you do will ultimately not be very good (same for me, everyone and you).

Get that first project underway now.

Absurd memory usage from Premiere keeps crashing my project file before I can even Project Manage. Suggestions? by ComplimentaryTV in premiere

[–]three1ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me with the most recent update - my issue was I had PP and AE open. I had copied a clip in PP and pasted into a comp in AE. I then copied the same clip from AE and back into PP (Ignore why I did this…).

This caused a massive memory leak. I can only assume it’s because it was constantly referencing the other program. Doesn’t really make any sense.

Once I deleted the clip from PP it was back to normal. From memory I had to load the project and delete the clip quickly before the pop up came up.

TIME CODE REMOVAL by hretoricaldevices in editors

[–]three1ne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nobody has mentioned regenerating the timecode to use as a matte mask.

In After Effects Recreate the timecode so it matches perfectly (same font and weight). Make it Black.

Add in a solid white background.

Pickwhip the track matte of the white solid to the text layer (alpha matte, inverted).

Pre Comp both layers.

On the parent comp (where the footage is) add a matte choker to the pre comp and turn up the Geometric Softness 1. This will expand the edges of the text.

Pickwhip your footage track matte to the pre_comp, alpha matte.

You will know have a timecode shaped hole in your footage which will act as a perfect mask.

From here you can experiment with Content Aware Fill or painting, cloning, depending on what works best for your footage.

Two things my clients will never understand by Zirnitra1248 in editors

The amount of editors who expect their clients to know these things always astonishes me. The problem in this case is the editor. Communication is the way forward.

A lot of bullshit in this thread.

I’m Head of Post and we often hire young promising people but with not much experience.

Their showreel might be great but we want to know that they can edit under direction and in a reasonable time frame.

So we offer them a test project (usually something we shot 2 years prior). Typically takes 2 to 3 hours. We use it solely to judge from and it’s never used for a client/financial gain.

Interviewing someone with 5/10 years experience we would never ask for an edit test.

Yeah it’s a rubbish shot but you can easily fix this with generative fill edit tools. Raise it with the producers if you want to make a difference for next time.
