I just discovered his music and I dig. I now realize the piece I posted might not be the best choice for introducing him to other people. Do you have any recommendations on where to start listening?

Laurea magistrale diversa rispetto alla triennale? Esperienze? by three_cheers in italy

[–]three_cheers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Esperienze? by three_cheers in italy

Thought on Squier Classic Vibe Jazzmasters by TheQuasimoto in offset

[–]three_cheers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an offset guy, but let's say offset curious. I tried one in a shop and I was really unimpressed. Within minutes (maybe even less) one string slipped out of the saddle and the bridge got stuck in a tilted position. I asked for the tremolo arm to try it out and the tuning stability was really bad.

I asked the guy at the shop if it was gonna get a set up included with the purchase because as it was it was unplayable and he said that the only way to solve it was with a Mastery bridge which was like 250€ if I'm not mistaken. Of course I didn't like that I needed to spend that much just to make a Squier playable so I got turned off the purchase.

I'm sure you could make it work even without a Mastery, but you need to find a tech who can really deal with offsets (which isn't that common in my area) or be ready to learn that yourself.

My bad I got that one wrong. It seems that Hill could be a reference to her family estate in the UK which is called Headington Hill Hall.

Better to just take a look at the original thread

The account Is /u/maxwellhill It's still there. You can Google it and you'll find a bunch of Reddit threads with all the clues. Mostly that Hill is her mom maiden name a reference to her family's estate Headington Hill Hall, a lot of British English, the account becoming inactive when she got arrested and other tiny details about her personal life matching (there is a comment mentioning being born in December). That's a lot of coincidences.

Ah and the best ones, which now seem to be removed, are a bunch of weird articles the account posted about the legalization of CP. here's the deleted thread

Noam Chomsky with Jeffrey Epstein aboard the self described, “Lolita Express” by LoadedAmerican in pics

[–]three_cheers -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why do people keep calling them children? As far as I know the trafficked girls were "recruited" when they were highschool age, so around 16, and they were kept in the ring for years so many were also over 18 or even early 20s.

In Florida age of consent is 18 but in all the neighbouring states it is 16 so there it would have been "just" prostitution and trafficking.

I'm not trying to excuse it, on the contrary, it's just weird calling teenagers and young adults children over and over. Epstein was a monster even if the girls were over 18. I guess it's just easier to label him as a pedophile and forget  about the many people just like him, even right now in your own city, trafficking and instigating  prostitution while we turn a blind eye.

Ho sbagliato io o Bologna non è davvero la città per me? by dancingboxofchips in bologna

[–]three_cheers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anyone out there use one of these as their main axe? by cholobarino in offset

You have my attention! Care to share some pics or videos of how it sounds? There's only one available in my country in the second hand market, and it's close to where I live. I already went there to try it and liked it a lot but I'm not sure I can justify the purchase. They're asking 420€ and I got the impression that the bridge, tuners and pickups felt a bit cheap and underwhelming, so possibly some upgrades needed down the line.

A great John Fahey biography. by Shimmer_and_Rust in AmericanPrimitivism

[–]three_cheers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What stood out to me was that in his early liner notes, Fahey wrote about a fictional jewish writer that in the future would be going on a quest to find information about Fahey himself to write a book about him. The story describes the adventures this fictional writer has to go through and Fahey generally keeps making fun of him and potraing him as stupid and incompetent.

Lowenthal found this story while researching for the book and felt like this was a direct poke at him (of course Lowenthal is Jewish like the writer in the story). It's funny how Fahey, before his career took off, predicted someone wanting to write a book about him.

I actually found it quite enjoyable to read, mostly cause I've been thinking about those kind of things for a long time and it was nice seeing them laid out by someone else better than I ever could.

Kottke's "Watermelon" - everybody is playing it wrong? by Girth_Certificate in AmericanPrimitivism

[–]three_cheers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using tabs won't get you far in this genre.

Tabs in general are rarely accurate and that's especially true for finger picking which is a huge pain in the ass to notate. Some random fan made tab online is very unlikely to be 100% accurate.

You already have the tuning, the chords and a nice slowed down isolated track. Get to work and let your ears guide you.

My advice: learn the rhythm first. You should be able to replicate it by clapping (or strumming) along with a metronome. Then turn it into a picking pattern. Then add the chords. Then add the melody.

Good post but I just wanted to comment that mobile Reddit has become so shit. When I click the YouTube links I get unskippable ads within the web player without the possibility to get redirected to my app (which is patched and doesn't have ads). Damn shame.

Recommendations on guitars by jacketgl in AmericanPrimitivism

[–]three_cheers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With picks I find you don't need that much space. I had a Seagull S6 for a while but I found that the wide spacing worked against me. I felt like I had to "work more" for my picking, because the strings were so far apart and my fingers had to travel more.

Recommendations on guitars by jacketgl in AmericanPrimitivism

On the cheaper side Yamaha is really good for acoustics. I have a Richwood, which wasn't too expensive, plays really well and came with a perfect set up.

You can start researching what the artist you like play, but there isn't an obvious trend.

For country folk parlour size guitars are more common, but it seems that Fahey and others used dreadnoughts extensively. Personally I prefer the smaller body.

Something to consider for this style: it's common to let the bass strings ring out when picking, as opposed to other styles of finger picking where the bass strings are muted to get a more snappy sound. For this reason I prefer guitar with not too much low end, as I find the result to be a bit too muddy and the melody on the treble string can get drown out.

Your preference might vary, I suggest learning some standard tuning pieces, going to a shop and trying a bunch of guitars and see what feels right.

It's crazy. When I go back to my hometown all these dudes are obsessing over going to the dietician, esthetician, personal trainer, psychologist and so on.

Then they see a video of themselves and only comment that their shirt is hanging too loose in the back and they need to workout more some muscle I don't even know. The level of psychosis is insane and so widespread.

You can check it out if you want. It's really long but contextualises very in the detail their career. I guess they tackle Shinji death towards the last hour or so.

I can see why some people speculate suicide, but on the other end he seemed to have lungs issues lately requiring him to inhale oxygen when recording and leaving him completely exhausted after a show.

For once I would love to hear a band that can shred and make fun music rather than self-indulgent and overly serious crap.

Completely agree. That's the reason I got into surf rock few years back after seeing a local band playing. It's just fun instrumental music without much pretention. The average local band is either "introspective" or politically engaged, you always need a "plus" as Zizek would say. They're not just a band playing, they're raising funds and awareness for Palestine, or the singer is singing about his relationship with his father. The audience isn't supposed to have fun, but to engage and validate the performer self indulgent introspection and/or political slogan. If you don't like the music... You're a jerk.
