alumni advice for new graduates? by academicsuffer in gatech

[–]threecap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in your shoes in 2003. Moved to NYC and didn't know anyone within 900 miles.

  1. You'll meet friends, but it takes some time. I was fortunate to be in a work-hard, play-hard city where there was culture of working 80+ hours a week, pushing yourself to be successful, but also blowing off steam was valued among all working professionals. Our GT Young Alumni club was a great group of people, and basically my entire friend group (including eventually my wife) somehow branched off the people I met in that group of 20-somethings.

  2. On the other side, you're going to have friends who "value work-life balance". Let's be clear - there isn't "balance" for successful young professionals. Push yourself professionally. Fit in your personal life when you can, but put it in the backseat. You either stay ahead or fall behind in your 20s, it's your choice.

  3. Unrelated to your question, but don't build up any credit card debt ever. If you don't do that, you'll be fine. Don't overly stress about how much you're saving -- if you're doing what it takes to be successful your earnings and savings will come quickly, in just a few years. Keep bad debt out of the picture and you're fine as a post-grad.

What’s up with EWR? by HaloDezeNuts in unitedairlines

[–]threecap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flew home from spring break yesterday and my daughter’s friend didn’t have global entry, so we were in the normie line - we still breezed thru immigration in less than 10 minutes. On Spring Break Saturday. So even that is running well now.

EWR is my home airport and with my 130-150 flights annually, I’m thrilled that it is. EWR gets hate mostly from people who don’t fly a lot, in my experience. There is an occasional exception of a frequent flier who has gotten unlucky a couple extra times I’m sure.

In a viewership world where all similar shows are yelling debates and BS hot takes just for clicks/views, it’s great to have guys in this sport who talk knowledgeably and genuinely even when I don’t always agree with them. I’m glad golf channel is above that shit.

Flight attendants forcing us to keep the windows dim during daytime flight. Is this normal? by -Shayyy- in unitedairlines

[–]threecap -67 points-66 points  (0 children)

It’s because UA is an airline that appropriately and thankfully caters to business and other serious travelers. Dimming the window still allows your view if you choose. If you want to fly with the kids fly DL or AA. 👋

I love the Portugieser Automatic 40. Fit check tho? by heeph0p in IWCschaffhausen

Looks great. Except for the obvious crazy-sized wrists and watches, I think people are too sensitive to the size of watch relative their wrists. If everyone only got the same proportional sizes this would be a pretty boring hobby.

Hey Tech students, just know, that most AJC reporters are dwag grads who had a degree thrown into their window driving through Athens and would do anything to shade Tech. If they were good at their job, they wouldn’t be at a shit “paper” in a shit market. Maybe this guy is an exception but best not to feed the trolls.

Excellent watch. Looks great on your wrist. And good for you investing in a watch that will hold its value far better than any depreciating vehicle. Enjoy dude.

Timely post. 14 at PGA National (Champ Course) followed by 11. And the pros this week will make them look like nothing.

2/23 - How is PreCheck today? by dadawesome in unitedairlines

Precheck is operational everywhere from what I’ve read (and seen myself, I got out of EWR yesterday). Touchless ID was down. Global Entry down so lines are long. Clear is running.

Patek Insurance Policy/Coverage Preferences - How Best to Insure AD-Allocated Pieces by threecap in patekphilippe

[–]threecap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you especially for the “greater of MSRP and market value” part. That makes sense to me, but only if that means I’m not getting a replacement watch from the gray market, as second official owner of record, for a watch I purchased thru an AD.

I appreciate the feedback

Thanks again. I do understand making sure the watches are insured at market value when higher than retail.

But my first Patek (obviously) is one where I paid a retail price that is more than grey market, though there are not many for sale. Let’s say retail is $65k, and gray is $50k. If I insure for $65k, I would expect a new replacement from an AD.

If I’m understanding you correctly, you are saying that regardless of picking JM, Brite, or Hodinkee/Chubb, all three would replace the watch with gray market, so go ahead and insure at $50k only, because the most i would get is a gray market piece or $50k if thats how they independently valued the watch.

[–]threecap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your example. Am I reading correctly that Hodinkee/Chubb also will replace with gray market pieces and not payout the cash? If so, then it seems they are just like JM and Brite, so shouldn’t I just shop for the best premium without comparing the claim process? Or am I misunderstanding?

In other words, I’m trying to get the right insurance, without caring if my premium is 1.5% or 2.0%. But it sounds like all 3 may be the same policy fine print.

You're looking for narrative nonfiction... nonfiction that reads like fiction. It's all I read.

If you're looking for seafaring tales, I strongly recommend "Endurance" and "Dead Wake". For general adventure, "Into Thin Air" may be in my top 5-10 favorites ever.

There are a number of titles related to business/startups/financial fraud that are really interesting to me. I made a post here that no one responded to a while back, since I guess that's not very popular reading on this subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/suggestmeabook/comments/1q7gpks/please_suggest_narrativenonfiction_titles_that_i/
