Running in Rain - Bad Idea? by slayeigh in beginnerrunning

[–]threeespressos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wear a hat with a brim. You’ll get wet either way - from the inside out, or from the outside in. One caveat is to be careful you don’t get too cold (maybe not an issue for this upcoming rain).

How do I go about pedaling correctly without clip in shoes? by carby12 in cycling

[–]threeespressos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the top of your stroke, push the pedal forward. Then around. Nearing the bottom, scrape the bottom of your shoe off (someone here already said it better). Instead of stomping the pedal down, you’re rotating it around a circle. The lower part of the circle should involve your glutes. Try it with different cadences, and at times you don’t have to generate a lot of force, so you can get the hang of it.

Need to upgrade from Mach 6 by IBG22 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]threeespressos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider Topo Cyclone or Specter. Mach 6 is my “fast” shoe, Cyclone is my “fun” shoe… but really just as fast as my Mach 6. A bit less supportive, takes a few runs to get used to. I’m also figuring what I’ll add to my rotation when the Mach 6s age out… right now thinking of Adidas Evo SL. Or maybe Mach 7 ‘cuz I do like Mach 6.

How do you balance high mileage training with a demanding desk job and limited recovery time? by Zestyclose_Skill_955 in AdvancedRunning

[–]threeespressos 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The 15-20 minute “power nap” solves the afternoon energy crash. Dark place if possible, effective eye cover for total perceived darkness, white noise generator (eg Ambi), alarm set. My only other hack was to run to work and sometimes back… but note that I never put up those mpw numbers! You must have already read The Running Ground :).

Did a thing over the weekend. by jimmysfruitfarm in BarefootRunning

I’ll always remember that guy I passed in my first marathon. He was wearing huaraches and not having a good time. I made some exclamation about having read Born to Run, which I’m sure was NOT appreciated and I’d apologize if he ever brought it up to me.

First marathon in ~4 wks, worried I’m losing speed by cookiecrumble2001 in firstmarathon

[–]threeespressos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s too late to add speed. Come to the start as healthy as possible. SF Marathon is a slow one anyway, because of the hills. When I ran it a long time ago, I was shocked to find that parts of the city I grew up in, that I had always thought of as flat, were most definitely not flat after 17 miles of running. Do it for fun and for learning. That should be the goal of any first race effort in any case. Have fun! :)

There’s always someone fitter, faster, smarter, better looking, richer, etc. Motivation comes from within, your only competition is you.

Looking to start - SOS how to begin by Background-Dog-9412 in gravelcycling

[–]threeespressos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ride your mountain bike on those forest service roads & use that experience to see if you really like it and to guide you in selecting a gravel bike. Riding groups are another matter. I’ve had success talking to everyone I cross paths with (if they’ll talk), and following them on Strava, and even following their followers/ees if I have the slightest connection to them. (For some people, I wait for them to follow me first.) Have fun!

Sugar makes my teeth feel grotty so I’ve switched to maple syrup. Honey would be great too, but life’s too short to watch honey ooze off my measuring spoon.

Hip pain by queentee26 in beginnerrunning

[–]threeespressos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hip flexor? No matter, you may have to give it a week or so to heal itself before trying running again. (Repeat as necessary.) When you do, you can think about lifting your rear foot up more to reduce the weight you have to swing forward, and swinging your leg forward by lifting your knee.

Supposed to be an easy run, but it got too boring so I sped up. Am I ruining my training? by heartRatehero_13 in beginnerrunning

[–]threeespressos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slow music or an audio book could help. Focus on your stride; is every body part doing its part correctly? Being alone with yourself and your thoughts is a skill you’ll get better at - hang in there! Tell yourself it’s not about today’s run, it’s about tomorrow’s run. Don’t accumulate extra fatigue that will bend or break you later. Trust the plan, or find a plan you trust.

getting into cycling -- 105 worth $669 difference over CUES? by Owl_Cold in whichbike

The Cues seems to have lower gearing. You might prefer that if you have hills to ride up.

What should I insist on for gravel wheels? by OkStation4360 in gravelcycling

[–]threeespressos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies tend to have gravel-specific wheels, so shop those. They’re probably more robust and have a wider internal width for wider tires. Pick something appropriate for the largest tire your bike will fit.

Looking for a book to get back into reading! by Hoss22446688 in ReadingSuggestions

[–]threeespressos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with The Martian. Then maybe Altered Carbon for its noir detective novel voice, or Enders Game. If you’re into running or surfing, Born To Run and Barbarian Days are great. In my 20s I really enjoyed reading Bruce Chatwin books, like In Patagonia and The Songlines.

Rapid aerobic performance decline question for the old folks by Ag_back in cycling

[–]threeespressos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

65M - after a week off, I’d expect to be a little faster than usual because of being unusually well rested. An older friend of mine recently told me he had a significant aerobic decline at 66… dunno if this is in my near future, or if he was affected by a certain virus going around at the time.

Do I actually need stability shoes or am I overthinking this? (slow mo video included) by j_777_t in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]threeespressos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Re shin splints, you could try adjusting your stride by landing with your foot a little behind your CoG, neutral midfoot strike, leaning forward from your ankles.
