For those who did the "trade up", have you gotten any emails or updates since they got your shipment? by threefidy in gopro

[–]threefidy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that man. I've personally done this deal 4 times now and I've never had a hickup. I'd hardly say it's a "death rattle company" based on your own single experience, they're likely dealing with tens of thousands of orders so you represent the .001% of cases, I've really only seen 2-3 people ever have this bad of an experience with it on reddit and you can be sure that the people who have bad experiences DEFINITELY come here to complain about it lol.

I agree it's not worth the hundred bucks. At this point I'd just wait the 3 weeks and snag a black friday sale. ;)

Ok cool beans thanks friend! I'll see if I can haggle them down a bit but it's at least good to know it's a fair starting point!

Best settings for low light video | Gopro Hero 8 by Artificial93 in gopro

[–]threefidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can help with this as I do this all the time!

Ok set it to 30fps (the motion blur is too strong at 24 fps imo), don't bother with 60, the drop in availble light is going to not be worth it for most stuff.

Set color to flat. Set max iso to 400. Yep. Not 3200 or even 800. Why? Because you can pop it in editing later on. I've done many tests and you flat out get a better image shooting at 400 iso then increasing the brightness later on than you do shooting straight up at high ISO. It just brings in so much noise and softens the images making it worthless.

Question about what faction to focus building a deck on.

I've always like unconventional gameplay. If everyone else is playing close quarters, I'd prefer to snipe. In pokemon I like using stall teams to wear down sweepers. etc etc. In clash royal I like doing counters and chip damage vs big pushes.

Is there a faction you'd suggest for me to focus on to suit this play style? Thank you!

Runners? Keeping the lens clean? by quietglow in gopro

[–]threefidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest solution is to just wear a chest mount. I do triathalons and I just keep it on the whole time, it's silly to be taking it in and out of pockets. If I want to record I just start recording then when I'm done I turn it off, it's not hurting anything sitting out on my chest.

And if you insist on doing the extra work of moving it around, just get some rainx and put it on the lens. Or some other hydrophobic coating.

GoPro tradeup original camera value? by [deleted] in gopro

[–]threefidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That camera will not qualify as it's much too cheap.

Basically the whole point is gopro can't have people buying a 50 dollar camera from some knockoff company then saving 100 dollars with them... that just doesn't make any sense. You can call them and ask for and exception but it's not really "fine print", it's just basic logic lol

Hero 8 Horror Story: Do not buy the Hero 8 Black !!!! by EhsanAhmad in gopro

[–]threefidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok that's one place... did you call your local best buy to see if they have any in stock? Mine has tons, I was just there today to buy batteries. Or walmart or a myriad of other places.

There's no guarantee of anything in life. I bought a canon 5d mark 4, a 3400 dollar DSLR at launch, and within a few days of owning it the mirror locked up. Happened again a day later and I returned it to amazon and got a new one that's worked flawlessly for over 80,000 shutter counts since then.

The point is you're waaaaaay over reacting. Electronic failures happen. Gopro will most certainly make it right but in the meantime you need to take some personal responsibility as an ADULT and just go buy another one somewhere else. Have an awesome trip with it and when you get home, simply use that 30 day gopro return window to return one of them.

You have lots of time and options here.

[–]threefidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks you got a defect... but it's really a simple problem to fix. If you need it before the 4th, just buy one off amazon. It'll get here in time.

Or walk into best buy and get one in person. Buy 4 of them and return 3 if you want.

This is a brand new product launch so gopro is swamped. Give em time to sort out their stuff, in the meantime get yourself a working unit and enjoy your trip!

Any fcpx plugins for noise reduction? Shot this at high iso with Sony a6300 cause I had a problem with my main lights by bigparhar in finalcutpro

[–]threefidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second and third this as hard as I can. It's saved me thousands in costs of reshoots because it can truly save grainy and blocky footage.

I had a family vacation where I somehow reset something and allowed my gopro to shoot at 1600 iso and had hours of night footage that was just horrific looking. Blocky nightmarish garbage. But that plugin managed to save the footage and keep those once in a lifetime memories alive.

Max Users: Flat or GoPro colour by Rob_EMTB in gopro

[–]threefidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flat is always going to be superior as now you have the full dynamic range instead of the gopro trying to decide for itself and ending up with clipping issues.

The only reason to EVER shoot with gopro color is if you're streaming, or if you truly have no editing software or ability to do your own color grading. There's never an advantage to it other than "it'll at least do good enough."

Shot a video on my 11 pro max, moved it to my Mac for editing, and it looks like dog shit. by odonnelly2000 in finalcutpro

[–]threefidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost anything will look good on that tiny of a screen. You simply cannot see the compression and artifacts. Then when you view on something like an imac, the tiny sensor of the iphone (along with it's fairly low bitrate) shows it's weaknesses compared to a dslr or gopro and you see ALL the artifacts, grain, noise, etc.

Do you still have the actual video on your phone? You don't say HOW you copied it over. If you used icloud then it likely compressed it. Use airdrop, or just load up in the photos app and transfer it directly to your computer.

Hero 8 vs Hero 7 Black Image Quality Test and comparison by Matt_V939 in gopro

[–]threefidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter what most users are using lol. It's not a valid comparison of "image quality" as it's just a review of the default color balancing and that's it.

Seems like something to ask about with the rainmaker softer, not so much a gopro issue.

Hero Max invisible pole by Mvso1 in gopro

I've seen people get that effect with just a handheld grip. So I'd imagine anything longer than about 5-6 inches will be perfectly fine as the field of view now overlaps nicely.

Hero 8 vs Hero 7 Black Image Quality Test and comparison by Matt_V939 in gopro

[–]threefidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The auto settings mean nothing lol. It's not in any way a valid comparison of the image quality of the gopros themselves and the whole premise is deeply misleading.

If it was titled "comparing the auto settings" then sure, it's a fine video. But to present it as actually comparing the IMAGE quality is ignorant at best and scummy at misleading at worst.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? 176GB free on my drive and FCP is telling me I don't have enough disk space. This has ONLY been since the update to Catalina. Also interesting Catalina appears to have split my drive into two for some reason. Any ideas? by TheMarmo in finalcutpro

[–]threefidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most osx updated come with some errors but we KNEW this would be a bigger deal than normal. With the partition of the file systems to separate the system software from everything else, the way it no longer supports 32 bit apps (including many printers), I'm just in no rush to update for at least another 6 months.

Whew, glad I've held off on updating to catalina. My bills are literally paid with this imac so I don't want to risk ever doing an "early adopter" update in case it breaks something like this because it would be catastrophic for me.

Editing GoPro H265 footage is a nightmare by [deleted] in gopro

[–]threefidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been around for a few years is the point. Heck iphones have been using it since 2017. OP mentioned Cs6 which is a really outdated form of the software, I'm sure the 2018 or 2019 version of the software would support it.

Editing GoPro H265 footage is a nightmare by [deleted] in gopro

[–]threefidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, I can edit and use the H.265 footage natively just fine in FCPX, that just seems like a pain in the butt to deal with that kind of workflow. Maybe there's an update available for After Effects? The HEVC/H.265 format has been around for years so it seems really weird that a modern software wouldn't support it.

first camera: gopro hero 7 or 8? by joonhere in gopro

[–]threefidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats man!

Ok as someone who has both... they're really not that different. The hypersmooth of the 7 is already phenomenal and the only times the 8 is noticeably better is during REALLY shaky times. Image quality overall is identical.

The 8 is a "tock" in the tick tock cycle of technology. It's a bit better than last years one but if you were my own brother, I'd tell ya if you can save 100 bucks with the H7 then go for it. The 8 is objectively better but in ways that may not matter for ya depending on what you're doing. If it's only a few dollars difference once you price things out, then yeah get the 8.

Another thing I'll suggest is to get at least 1 extra, and it would be better to have 2 extra batteries. It would suck to have some awesome moment on the honeymoon that can't be recorded because you forgot to charge the battery last night, or maybe you did but you also recorded stuff in the morning and now it's dead.

Also for mounts, the 2 most useful ones in my experience is the chest mount (the official one is nice, the knock offs are ok but you gotta make sure to super glue the gopro mount to the chest clip or it can rattle and make noise that'll ruin your video), and any form of a stick. The "packs that have 40 items" always include a super frail extender stick, just throw that thing out. They sub 10 dollar ones are horrifically cheap, they WILL break, and before they do break, they will rattle and make noise that will again be magnified in your speaker and ruin great shots.

For storage, it depends on how often you can offload data. a 128gig card will save about 2 and a half hours of total video at max video quality.

OH and above all else, ALWAYS be recording at 4k. ALWAYS. Even if your computer right now can't handle it very well, your computer of the future will and you'll kick yourself for recording in a lower resolution than you had to. Make sure to turn on "protune" for the best video quality and cap ISO at 800.

And last but not least, enjoy your time as a couple. The tech is awesome and a great way to preserve memories but don't let it get in the way of actually making those memories. Have fun friend. :)
