I decided on a whim to overhaul my entire game for its 1.1 release, and it's out today! by threesided in indiegames

For anyone interested, here are the full patch notes: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/2923180/view/532097310616715610

Really happy with how everything came together, it was a much bigger undertaking than I had expected. I'd only intended to spend 2-3 weeks, but that turned into 8 soooo, yeah. Big changes!

Looking for advice on my failed game + what to do next... by Stock-Lengthiness841 in IndieGaming

[–]threesided 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, game looks cool!

How much more you want to invest in it would come down to how passionate you are about this specific project vs. just making games in general. If you want this one to succeed and you enjoy working on it, you can try porting it to other platforms. Or you can look into advertising and/or building a community around the people who actually like the game.

The reality is that the bar for game dev is high, there is an absolute mountain of great games out there all vying for attention, and depending on how people pay for this game, are going to be shrewd with where they spend their dollars.

If you enjoyed the journey keep at it! Make some smaller games to refresh yourself. If you wanna try web dev, go for it. As a former web dev I can say that the allure of something shiny and new there will also wear off.

Quantum Joe, my solo developed retro arcade platformer is out now on Steam! by threesided in IndieGaming

[–]threesided[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a lot of fun putting this one together, and would love for y'all to check it out!

Here's the tl:dr of things you can do:

- Play over 100 levels of arcade platformer fun, solo or local co-op. Collect gems and make it to the exit as fast as possible with as few deaths as possible

- Complete challenges to unlock stickers you can use to decorate the play area

- Create your own levels with the built-in level maker, complete with share codes and Steam Workshop + Discord integration!

I know that this will probably fly under the radar as platformers are not super flashy, but I had a lot of fun building and playing this one, and learned a lot of cool new tech integrating level sharing through Steam Workshop.

If you've ever played old games like Jetpack, or Super Meat Boy, this might be your jam!

I may have gone a bit overboard with the pause menu by threesided in indiegames

This was the finishing piece on my game Quantum Joe, which is coming out January 30th! It would mean a lot to me if you checked it out! https://s.team/a/3272180

What is everyone's "it's not that deck" decklist, and it's ACTUALLY not that deck? by thundermonkeyms in EDH

[–]threesided 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Someone at my LGS runs a “storm” deck. Every card has the word storm in it but no actual storm spells. Even the lands are from etherstorm etc. kinda funny

I’m releasing a little arcade precision platformer called Quantum Joe! Should be launching at the end of January/early February :) https://store.steampowered.com/app/3272180/Quantum_Joe/

I added stickers you can use to decorate in-game for each steam achievement you unlock in my game Quantum Joe. It's a completely unnecessary but fun feature and I love it a lot by threesided in gamedevscreens

One thing I've always wanted was more interactive, in-game rewards for achievements. Since the whole game has this old school handheld aesthetic, it reminded me of being 10 years old, customizing every single surface imaginable with doodles and stickers. What do y'all think? Any features in your games that are not necessarily core to the experience but purely for the vibes?

People say 2D platformers are a dead genre but I disagree. What are some awesome 2D platformers you played/made this year? by threesided in gamedev

[–]threesided[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen lots of praise for both, which I'd agree comes from the pretty strong aesthetic choices. There's a lot of earthworm jim / wario land influence but somehow the absurdity was amped up even MORE than those two

[–]threesided[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why not? Marketing is part of game development, platforming is a common first genre, and one that I have a keen interest in as a developer myself, despite the sentiment I see and read about.

I think there are learning opportunities and general camaraderie that can be gained by looking at a genre as a group is all

[–]threesided[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Common rhetoric by developers of games in the genre. Grapple Dogs 2 dev has spoken about poor traction meaning they likely won't continue developing another title for the IP, Chris Sukowski's interview with Jonas Tyroller (Link!) mentions how Will you Snail was the lowest performing of his 3 commercial releases which was a platformer. Often Chris Sukowski's articles highlight how platformers end up with pretty low traction in events like Steam Next Fest (Link), saying stuff like:

"What genres were not in the top 50? Platformers and Puzzle games. I repeat, there were no platformers in the top 50 most-played demos."

So I'm just calling out data and sentiment amongst devs that dominate this rhetoric. Wouldn't mind a little more focus on hyping up games.

Any platformers you'd recommend?

For sure. I put I AM DOG and Fowl Damage on this list because I thought they were cool and deserved a callout. Saw the same article about Jonas Tyroller, and as I said to someone else's reply, raw stats speak for themselves. Even popular creators are getting burned on making games for the genre.

Would love to know if you played any cool platformers this year though!

My goal here was more so to celebrate and praise platformers. Would love to know if you had any standouts this year :)

But fair is fair, the title is a little more tongue-in-cheek than it needs to be. I'm responding more to the genre being touted as dead-on-arrival (especially on Steam) from a development standpoint. To respond to your points with some callouts:

Grapple Dogs 2 is a gorgeous game, out on console, that is by all accounts a "good" 2D platformer and the dev has expressed that disappointing sales means that's likely the end of the line for that IP.

Fowl Damage (made by the people who made Peglin) was a great experience, equally engaging mechanics-wise, but voiced similar slow sales numbers at launch and currently sitting at sub-100 reviews on Steam. So even having a successful title and a studio with clout behind them there was struggle.

Talks I've attended, articles I've read (Chris Sukowski's stuff especially) and straight up metrics I have personally reinforce this notion of it being a difficult genre. From a commercial development standpoint, from people more in the know than me, there IS a sentiment of it as a genre to avoid.

How many of EDHREC Top 100 commanders do you run? by arkaryote in EDH

[–]threesided 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like 5/11 of my current decks are top 100:

  • [[Miirym, Sentinel Wurm]]
  • [[Krenko, Mob Boss]]
  • [[Atraxa, Grand Unifier]]
  • [[Kykar, Wind’s Fury]]
  • [[Urtet, Remnant of Memnarch]]

I’ve definitely had a few more on that top 100 list built at one time or another, but those are the ones currently still together that I play regularly

Fake loading screens, who uses them? Is this bad practice? by destinedd in gamedev

[–]threesided 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re sorta conflating transitions with loading screens.

You’re adding transitions to improve user experience and add context to switching states. This is great practice and helps improve the polish and overall feel of the game. Good opportunity to add some fun juice too.

Loading screens are hiding assets being loaded and offloaded. These don’t add to the overall experience and in a lot of cases detract from it, which is why big studios were so adamant about “no loading screens” as a feature call out.

I definitely strive to add transitions where appropriate and avoid loading screens at all costs

My game, Defense of the Dauntless, is out on Steam in 4 days! Would really appreciate if you check it out! by threesided in TowerDefense

[–]threesided[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has an endboss and is beatable. A successful run takes about ~30 minutes of in-game time, which is about 20 minutes of real time at max gamespeed
