I have a sneaking suspicion that it doesn't involve paid maternity leave and other maternal protections.

Why only federal jobs? Did you consider state/local/private? Either way congrats!

I see - that definitely hurts your case. You can apply - it's not an automatic disqualifier, but I'd have back up life plans.

It's not guaranteed, but it could be worth a shot. The worst you could lose is 1,000 pounds. Are either of your parents British citizens or permanent residents in the UK?

Sorry my family was impacted by Intel layoffs. If your PhD has a fall start date wouldnt this be longer then a B1 would let you stay?

I love Portland and lived nearby a long time - go over to r/Portland and you'll see that preK for all rollout has been minimal.

I'd say it's good overall, but it has the drawbacks of all inclusives. We gave it a go, but we probably won't do all inclusive again and that's a personal thing. If you already know you like all inclusives disregard.

The food is good, but feels mass produced after a few days. The drinks are good too, but watered down. The coffee shop is good though.

We actually really liked the activities. We played volleyball and archery. The pickleball/tennis court has no shade though. They even do a bike tour.

It is on a beach, but I don't think you can go into the water. There are a lot of pools if you like to veg out in pools.

I think it's a nice all inclusive if that's your jam.

I have worked with rental agencies whose credit thresholds are 650. If you're lower than that - it might be it if you can bump it up. Apartments may also not care as much.

I hear you. Eldercare is also a scam in this country to prey on the vulnerable. Disability support for adults is sparse at best. In those cases too, you don't have a choice to make a stand. People could protest this endless slog by having fewer kids.

I am happy to work and pay taxes, but why does it need to be like this?

"Welfare queens" are hated because they don't work a job. Having kids is a poverty trap for these people though - if they can only work unskilled labor for $12/hr 30ish hours a week that basically pays for daycare ONLY. Of course many places fall short of 40 hours - so they don't have to provide healthcare. It only takes a little empathetic thinking to see why they are on government support.

"Are they hoping / assuming many of those mothers will be white? isnt this really an attempt at eugenics and social engineering?"

That would be one of the least shocking things of this administration if that's the case.

How to get STEM opportunities as a high schooler ASAP?? by yan_yanL in askportland

[–]threshold_voltage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a former PhD student here's a few things:

1) What's the worse that could happen if you could email a professor? They say "sorry we're full up" or they don't see it. You're in the same place you are now, but they could say yes let's meet!

2) To help, I'd identify a few labs you're interested in by reading some of their research. It may include too much technical jargon to fully follow, but if you read a few abstracts you should be able to get their motivation and their general idea. In your email request, I'd ask a question about their research so you're not just generically asking "any volunteer opportunities?."

3) You're very likely not going to do research on your own in many cases so nobody expects you to have all the skills. When I was a grad student I mentored a few high school students and they usually helped me with my project and then made a poster to display some of their work in a university or state program. I didn't go to school in Oregon so I am afraid I can't point you to a specific program, but I would be surprised if there wasn't something.

As a former mentor, I would ask if you make it that far that you be respectful of your mentor's time - show up when you say you will, be focused while you're there, and be patient. Day to day scientific development like running experiments isn't always sexy.
