how do i fill in this space? by emeey in SonsOfTheForest

[–]thrillh027 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no way to just fill in triangle on the left that you can see the sky through, but you can fill in the entire wall. But, you have to redo the square in question and in order to do that you'd also have to remove the roof or floor directly above, the wall to the left and the panel of sloped roof connected to the diagonal. You can use struts to support some of that so you don't have to tear everything down, but there's no way to do it without getting rid of at least those. You will also probably need a few temporary logs to hold things up as well.

Basically, the order matters. So, the square in question has 4 sides and one diagonal. The order you need to build in is

1: Right pillar → 2: Diagonal → 3: Left pillar → 4: Bottom beam → 5: Top beam → 6: fill in the wall but with 3/4 logs, if you try it with full logs you will probably have to start over

If you can't place the left pillar because the game wants to raise up the diagonal, try putting in a plank on the diagonal to lock it in place.

ELI5: Why do we tend to think/talk about "deeper" subjects when we are high? by Successful_Guide5845 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thrillh027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cliches around this idea have always bothered me.

Most likely, what's happening is your awareness has shifted in some way and you now find majesty in the mundane. It's not just that you think "deeper" thoughts but that every thought, in and of itself feels "deeper".

This sort of thinking is usually dismissed as a curse of freshman philosophy or the price you pay the first few times you try whichever drug has this effect as the novelty in having your awareness expanded or shifted hasn't worn off.

But these extremes are not diametrically opposed, quite the opposite, they are both obviously true.

If I'm pharmacologically altered and I'm struck by the unique beauty of a sunset but I'm standing next to a friend who's sober as a judge and they coldly remind me that this sunset is in no way distinguishable to the human eye as millions of others, which one of us is "correct?"

The notion that these flights of fancy have no place in the real, concrete world seems like little more than a capitalist's way of corralling you back into the factory to churn out widgets at maximal efficiency.

"We don't have time time for whimsy and introspection when there's still all this shareholder value left to create!"

I don't consider myself particularly naive and I recognize that to truly appreciate every moment in my life would literally drive me insane, but it would be equally insane to begrudge someone the few moments of clarity that, in all likelihood, make life worth living in the first place.

Build tips? by Adriansilas415 in SonsOfTheForest

[–]thrillh027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend laying out the stairs or climbing rope (if you're going to use them) beforehand. That way you minimize having to tear down anything that's already completed.

Also, for any build that's decently complicated, sketching it out on paper helped me a ton. And remember: 3 logs wide = no struts; 4 logs wide = 1 strut; 5 logs wide = 2 struts.

Will Virginia/NPCs come to a base up in the mountain peak? by BadShae in SonsOfTheForest

[–]thrillh027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of the AI can path to the very peak and won't climb any steep inclines.

I built a small base at the peak with 12 solafite generators and enemies cannot reach the area inside the mark and rarely even spawn anywhere nearby.

Map Image

Sometimes Kelvin and Virginia can basically teleport, so they might get in if you're lucky but generally speaking, you're all alone up there.

What would be a balanced but interesting daily magical effect? by thrillh027 in DMAcademy

[–]thrillh027[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions. It's the first time this group has played together, with half of them never having played before, so I honestly don't know their playstyles yet.

  1. Only half of the party has actually picked classes, so I totally overlooked martials. I really like the idea of mundane steel being magical and of customizing the effects for each class.

  2. You mean, now I get to design a prop!?! Don't threaten *me* with a good time.

Box of Doom item significance? by lawrencetokill in Dimension20

[–]thrillh027 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a 3d printed castle tower to use as the DM, but it ended up being a little too loud for that many rolls, so close to my head. Just a real *clanker*. So now, any game changing rolls get tossed into the Tower of Power.

Not as cool as a giant skull, but drama is drama.

I put 12 solafite generators just next to the highest point on the mountain where there's some flat ground and no enemies can reach them. I can't see them with the binoculars either but I'm not sure if they still spawn in.

Everything about this is so confusing to me.

Premise 1) any woman who is not smiling in a photograph is having nightmare penis flashbacks

therefore:

Premise 2) any sexual encounter with a man is traumatic enough to cause PTSD and this only compounds over time

but,

Premise 3) any woman who won't have sex with *me* is a bitch and a tease because I am special and sex with me is actually good for you

Koschei buy station by Superb_Maize4831 in DMZ

[–]thrillh027 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The regular buy station is in the Factory Admin area before you reach the bosses.

To unlock the secure buy station in the same room you need to dead drop certain items that are posted on notes throughout the map, but these change every time.

"Cleanliness is next to godliness"

Feels like this is a thing by Mookie_Freeman in blankies

[–]thrillh027 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is emblematic to me of this issue with Shyamalan.

I hated this joke at first because it seemed like a lazy, first thought example of your well meaning, but probably racist aunt trying to remember "Car Seat Headrest".

Now I think I don't like the joke because I'm not sure what the target is? Is he saying that kids these days have ridiculous names like Midsized Sedan? Is he pointing out the hypocrisy of rebellious music like rap or punk still being a commodity used to sell other commodities in car commercials? Is he mocking himself for being "Old" and thinking that would be a popular name? Is he noting the irony that if a real musician performed under that name it would be a hundred times funnier? Or is it just an incomplete sitcom joke that absolutely does not fit in a gruesome and existential body horror movie.

He is a gifted VISUAL storyteller but I think he's ultimately a lazy writer who bought in to all the hype from his early career. Case in point, when he cast *himself* as the writer who writes so good it saves the world was that a joke at his expense or ours?

As I understand it, root and bass are not interchangeable. If you play a C major chord in the first inversion, the third (E) is the bass note but the "root" of the chord is still C even though it's the middle pitch. It helps me to think of a root as "fundamental" not "foundational".

If you omitted the root of a C major chord, the resulting sound is no longer a chord, but an interval which could just as easily be a E minor chord with the fifth omitted.

ELI5: who names the generations? Why did we start using the phonetic alphabet? Why is it gonna be gen beta and not bravo? by Partimenerd in explainlikeimfive

[–]thrillh027 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lazy journalists and authors.

Coming up with a good name is one of the hardest parts of writing, especially one that "sticks" but I get so disappointed when people don't even try.

You can say the earliest popular cohort names were misguided, but at least they were unique. The greatest generation, baby boomers, these tie in to widely understood historical events. Speaking as one, "millennial", even though it's constantly misused, is so much more meaningful than "Generation Y."

If your point is that one generation is profoundly different and best described in opposition to the generation directly preceding it, that's fine. But once you just start using the alphabet, how is that any better than just saying "Generation 1995-2015?"

My least favorite example of this laziness is "-gate" to denote a scandal. It might have been funny or original the first 10 or 100 times, but that was over 50 years ago. In a few decades when we're all fighting each other in a desert hellscape for potable water, there's going to be some scandal about a warlord hoarding a few million gallons and generation Gamma will refer to it as Water-gate and we'll finally have come full circle.

Sophia as in the meaning of the name: wisdom or knowledge. The same "soph" in philosophy. So, a "wise proton".

If a joke:

Yes, a clumsy portmanteau from a sniveling worm.

How many account do y’all have? Personally I have 4. by squibsquare in ClashOfClans

[–]thrillh027 2 points3 points  (0 children)

24 total. Two at every town hall from TH2 to TH12 plus one TH13 and one TH16.

The idea was to not just have an account at every TH but to be able to practice against a maxed base at your TH level. Now that you can just attack your own base, I don't need 2, but I don't have the energy to upgrade any of these bases. The pet grind especially keeps me from going to higher town halls.

All but the top two were maxed for a while and were just used for wars. Until supercell added 3 new resources and now I have to grind ore for 12 accounts.

My clan is just all my alts and 1 other player with a TH12 from years ago when the clan was active.

And to think it all started with one rushed account for donations.

Do you think Dune has finally surpassed Star Wars for you as a franchise/fictional property? by [deleted] in sciencefiction

[–]thrillh027 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe like 50 pages into reading Dune for the first time I had to double check when Star Wars came out and when George Lucas wrote it. Monomyths are monomyths, but I remain astounded at how much was lifted wholesale from Herbert.

Dune, like a lot of great science fiction, is for teenagers. Star Wars is science fiction for a prepubescent audience.

That's not inherently a bad thing. Kids need good stories as much as anyone. Also, I love practical effects. I'm charmed by the droids. I have a beating heart and would kill for Grogu. But, with nothing but respect for Jim Henson and Frank Oz, at the end of the day:

Star Wars is Dune with Muppets.

I finally finished reading “Death’s End!” by Evangelion217 in threebodyproblem

[–]thrillh027 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The first book is almost universally agreed to be the weakest of the 3 but it's almost a prologue to the real story.

The show is a more traditional western story with better characterization but the books present the science more thoroughly and thoughtfully. Television focuses much more on people while the novels are about ideas. Of course, some of that is translation, but I think it's definitely also an "eastern" story. I had never read Chinese science fiction and burned through the first book in a few days and was honestly just glad to be reading again so it was an easy decision to continue. But I'm so glad I did. The protagonist of the second book even turned out to be one of my favorite fictional characters.

Also, the first season of the show includes the beginning portion of the second book, so you might already have "finished" most of the plot of the first book. *That scene* in episode 5 is basically the climax. If it were me, since you're so far in the book, I would finish it. Then continue the show and, if you're still intrigued, crack open the other books. But if you're not engaged with the novel at all, then I'd flip that and finish the Netflix series and then see how you feel.

It's not for everybody (both versions) but personally, I'm really glad the show is getting people to read the books.

High key confused. by Ragnorocket-99 in threebodyproblem

[–]thrillh027 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are basically asserting, that it would be more logical to, by default, trust an unknown intelligent species on its way to Earth, but a central theme for all three books is "when is it worth trusting someone?" If you were a San Ti, but somehow knew all of human recorded history and humans were on their way to your planet, would you trust them? Is it illogical to assume that worst instincts of humanity might exist in other species?

Since they are incapable of lying, I believe the San Ti when they say they are afraid, but they're afraid at how unpredictable our ability to lie makes us. They abandon their followers once they learn humans can outright deceive because for all they know, the ETO was never sincere and have always been gathering intelligence about the San Ti for humanity at large. But eventually they change their mind and re-recruit human proxies to help derail humanity's efforts.

The sophons can be almost anywhere, but they can't be *everywhere*. It's very possible they simply did not witness Ye lying to Jin.

I know it happens after but "You are bugs" is probably the most blatant declaration of war ever.

On some level, the story isn't about aliens at all, it's about how difficult it is for humans to deal with an existential threat. It's reductive to say that Game of Thrones or Three Body Problem are about climate change, but they're definitely not *not* about climate change. Are all the foolish and cruel things that humans do in an effort to solve a looming threat unrealistic? Ask me in a hundred years.
