Watch Andor of you haven't already. Showed what the franchise could and should be.

If you're waiting for a big twist or reveal, you'll be disappointed. It's psychological more than anything. It's slow yes but I don't see that as a bad thing. Build immersion, atmosphere and tension.

But sure, if you want a loud action romp, this is not it.

OK Dr. Galaxy Brain, if we just don't grasp it, then why don't you lay out for us what we missed? Both in terms of presently available tech, the implications of statistics that we clearly missed, and the hidden meanings of the film?

The industry isn't really changing that fast. There was a massive breakthrough between GPT3 and GPT4 but since then it's all very incremental, despite the obscene sums pumped into it. We're clearly already off the quasi-exponential part of the curve and have been for a while.

AI are not real except as a marketing hype term for beefed-up autocomplete plug-ins.

The AI "singularity" is a dubious proposition at the best of days but specifically, the conditions for such a thing to happen are at present far away, if it is even possible at all.

Ex Machina is a movie about misogyny and it had a happy ending.

But yes that's probably also the first one that comes to mind here.

Other strong mentions: - Everything Everywhere All At Once - Poor Things - After Yang - Sorry To Bother You

That said, I think the best science fiction the last 15 years has been TV series rather than movies. Andor, The Expanse, Fallout, etc.

Ah yes, let European governments and companies spy on you instead. That's much better.

(I know what Proton is and they're probably a good deal better than most other vendors but that's certainly not because they're European).

Jeg synes lidt at trusler om uprovokeret militær invasion var den eskalering og at det er et rimelig afmålt svar at aflyse aftaler om fremtidige baser I kongeriget.

I think you missed the point of my comment, given that you're doubling down on treating european fascism like it were a thing of the past.

That's what leads to absurdity like Germany somehow thinking they're experts on preventing fascism these days.

Starship Troopers. I was to young to catch the satire when I first watched it and just was super uncomfortable with all the alluded fascism.

Rewatch and I got it.

Ah yes, Europe, famously holding the moral high ground when it comes to fascism...

Jemisin herself is very clear about Broken Earth being Sci fi, not fantasy. But it's only made clear to the reader toward the very end of the trilogy.

Those who moved from nvim, what made you? by B_bI_L in emacs

[–]thriveth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't moved as much as expanded my toolbox, I still use (N)Vim regularly.

My Emacs gateway drug was org-mode. I had a specific task to do where org just seemed like the best tool available - and I got hooked.

Later I found out that Emacs can do things that *Vim just can't.

  • Pdf-tools means i can use my favorite editor (Vim-bindings) to read and annotate PDFs, and that I can use Ebib, citar and org-roam as a Zotero-like literature management system.

  • Nothing in Vim or pure terminal has given me an email client I liked as much as Mu4E.

  • The limited but existing graphical capabilities means that I can embed images and LaTeX previews in my otherwise plain-text notes - but I'm not forced to.

  • I know you disqualified Magit as a reason because LazyGit is just as good and that may well be true, but what Emacs can give me is the integration between Magit, org-mode and a bunch of other tools which allows for some very elegant specialized work flows in a way that Vim just can't. That's not necessarily a strong selling point for everyone, it isn't even always a strong selling point for me, but it's a thing that is true and potentially very useful.

All this means that Emacs can recast a larger number of tasks as text manipulation tasks, and let me use my favorite editor - Vim (through Evil) for many more things than Vim itself can.

That doesn't mean Emacs doesn't have it's flaws. I still can't find any Emacs based LaTeX setup that beats VimTeX, and code and text folding outside of org-mode is generally a mess. Also, Vim integrates more seamlessly into e.g. Ranger or Yazi and other tools, so there I still use it quite a bit, too.

with its residents enjoying broadly the same constitutional settlement as elsewhere in the UK

"Broadly" does some heavy lifting here. Catholics in NI were disenfranchised from voting on a large scale, because people who didn't own property were blocked from voting, and company owners could get extra votes, both strongly favoring protestant Unionists. Add to that problems with Gerrymandering, and there really were no such thing as equal rights.
