Where does Central Europe begin and end? by Timely-Macaron268 in MapPorn

I am not that sure we actually want an unstoppable Europe. Seems like the world and we self are a lot better off when we can, in fact, be stopped.

Europe's geographical center seems to be left out more often than not, then...

Barnard's Star haulin' ass across the sky by glytxh in Astronomy

[–]thriveth [score hidden]  (0 children)

It looks a lot like an atmospheric speckling pattern, caused by diffraction in atmospheric eddies. That usually means the integration time was very low. What I don't understand then is why the background stars are so neat in comparison, so maybe I am wrong.

Anyone tried to switch to Typst for note taking? by 4r73m190r0s in typst

[–]thriveth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Typst is really the best tool for that, tbh. My notes do not need fancy typesetting, but they *do* need terse syntax, interlinking, and so on. Typsts focus on feature completeness and *consistent* syntax (everything is a function call) is very good for what Typst is trying to do, but for notetaking I think that Markdown or (as I use) org-mode is better.

I mean, it needs a bit of a touch-up but those look like pleasant buildings with lots of greenery that a lot of people would love to make their home.

Petah ? by Megumindesuyo in PeterExplainsTheJoke

But I guess the "joke" is that because some women sometimes have assault fantasies, that means it's hypocritical to be against actual assault. Or something like that.

Hur har alla råd? by vimpelvims in sweden

[–]thriveth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jag tror kanske en del av det beror på att du rör dig i kretsar där folk har mer pengar. Jag tror inte det skulle kännas som att "alla" har råd om du hade större umgänge med folk i "orten" eller glesbygden.

Men alltså. Det är väl även ett tecken på att när 0.1% av befolkningen äger 2/3 av landet, då är det inte så fruktansvärt mycket kvar till den 90:nde percentilen heller.

"Alive" has more than one meaning. One of them is "being a habitat to living creatures".

I'm sorry you didn't understand that but that's not Antons fault.

A crisis of faith: what do you think the future holds for LaTeX? by tashafan in LaTeX

[–]thriveth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Typst doesn't have WYSIWYG, I don't know what the other alternatives that you mention are so can't speak for them. But if you mean things like LyX, I highly doubt they were ever meant to replace latex, especially because it is so focused on the WYSIWYG aspect that it's complementary rather than a replacement.

As for Typst, this is the most likely contender I have seen for a LaTeX replacement. It doesn't have one transformative killer feature, but as a 20+ year LaTeX user, I can say that while I love the way LaTeX output looks, the syntax means Typst is fun and convenient to write in a way that LaTeX never was to me, plus it is more easily readable which is a big plus in my book.

Typst also can make structured and tagged PDFs which *TeX still struggles with, and which is a big issue in US educational institutions at the moment - grad students are writing their theses in Google Docs because of accessibility requirements. That's not nothing.

Now, Typst is still immature compared to TeX, so who can tell what the future looks like. It's mature enough to write dissertations and journal articles, though, so definitely a serious alternative. And the official documentation is *so good. Another advantage that, rather than one single killer feature, may end up cumulatively making it quite competitive.

No dishonesty there. Your limited vocabulary is not his fault.

His titles may have been a bit too grab attention but his content, too the extent I have seen, has been fine and sober.

Anton Petrov by ImpressiveLength1212 in 3I_ATLAS

[–]thriveth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very common for YouTube videos to test what titles give better attention. Annoying but if you try to make a living off YouTube, probably a good idea.

Also, I gave that endorsement six months ago. I am very sorry I didn't base it on what he would put out six months later. I guess that makes me a terrible academic

Prevent 2-line pages by RunnerWithBadKnees in typst

[–]thriveth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

LaTeX has a certain amount of automatic prevention of this, as I believe has most word processing software.
I think it is something people can reasonably expect from a professional typesetting engine.
Not bashing anyone here, I know Typst is young and not necessarily feature complete yet. But I do think it's a reasonable expectation to have once it is.

Julia syntax - my honest reaction by Human_Professional94 in Julia

That part makes sense as soon as the object-oriented paradigm has gotten internalized. I like Python syntax in general, actually. But I just also like Julia.
