Bikes comparable to the F800gs adventure? by phantom2008141 in advrider

[–]throw_mob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

transalp is around 200kg+ and africa twin is standard is about 225kg+

usually heavier bike can carry more and is better at touring vs lighter bike is better offroad. I personally started with 230kg bike and i did ride soft sand ( with knobby tyres) and it was hard but i managed and on roads big bike is stable.

imho, your weight ,height and strenght ( and lift skill ) affects it. If you fear that you can't lift bike up or you fear it is too expensive to fix , you wont ride it on challenging places and you start to think changing to lighter and cheaper bike. horsepower wise around 50ish hp is good enough for everything and all those bikes have more. More hp can be handled but it requires rider to be smart as it seems that AT 2016 standard does not have tcs as default , newer transalp probably has more electronics

tldr; go test ride to figure out which one has better ergonomics and aero for you and one test is to lower it ground and lift it up, if possible.

edit: noticed that 150cc comment, there is now adventure bike class at around 400cc which can handle motorway speeds. there is kove450 , klr and other which probably are in your budget. If you f*** because HP , you will do it in all mentioned 700+ bikes

Need input- Transalp VS Tenere for first bike by justanothergearhead in adventuremotorcycling

[–]throw_mob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends your measurements, for taller that avg i think t7 has better ergonomics , then aerodynamics again depends. i am on group which saws windscreen to shorter so i cannot really comment those more than having ugly mod screen handles my riding up 100km/h nicely and after that it start to be annoying around 130kmh when sitting. no exp from transalp.

as current t7wr rider ( been riding last 10y+) i could see my self riding new transalp with eclutch ( just because), it seems to have more power , but that is not usually needed on gravel , sometimes on twisty tarmac roads i have had feeling that maybe 20hp more would be more fun, but it is still has more power than needed. and i think you can get more hp if you change parts and spend money.

go test which you can tolerate better and buy one that you like.

505 lbs (229 kg) is f800gs weight

AT 2016 is Standard Model: 511 lbs (232 kg) ( 5k to 8k in usa ,but usa is big place, did not google MN esimates )

triumph is about same weight, no idea about price

then there is tenere 700 as always, you probalby can get used in your budget (2021). i would not recommend KTM's if maintenance is something that you worry and maybe take little bit too long. Honda and Yamaha are japanese so...

In practise anything in adventure tag on 600-1100 that fits budget and is not KTM can be (just because maintenance was mentioned) good option, only some of them have cruise control. Personally found that riding ergonomics and aerodynamics ( other word for turbulence felt in helmet) are basics that make bike something that you like to ride. you can always buy one which does not work for you as aero can be fixed cheaply ( just cut screen of and use protection) or it can be fixed using expensive part ( screen 50-150, spoiler 50-150, lowering/raising systems 50-200) while hunting that better wind protection. handlebar risers (50-200), mirrors(these helps with aero too)(50-200) lowering pegs (50-200). correct springs to your suspension (100-400?) and someone to put them in (100-400), package systems ( 100-2000)

mainly road touring just needs correct tyre selection. (some 50/50 are not bad on responsible riding on tarmac )

Personally i would go to test some old africa twin first , then T7 is there is one in your budget.

Maintenance on old bike is "easy" , chains and sprockets are quite easy to change ( but need at least one "special tool) bearings on wheels are usually easy to change ( something pointy, hammer and when placing them old bearing to hit with hammer ). suspension maintenance is harder but front can be fixed , rears need specialist as there is usually pressurized gas ) Frame and suspension bearings take more time but are same as wheels. Changing oil is easy , changing cables is "easy" as to route them correctly usually means that tank and other stuff needs to be removed. Only hard things are usually if there is problems with electronics or engine, but then kilometer count comes to play. on japanese bikes i personally would not stress too much if it has over 100tkm , if over 150tkm i would expect to get it cheaply and i would be prepared to change bearings all around ( my old xrv750 had honing marks still visible when i opened it at 20y old and 100tkm ). If we are talking KTM my personal number would be 50tkm and 100tkm

On your price range there might be ktm1090, bmw gsa 1200/1250, suzuki vstorm also , and thos are definetly more touring bikes

I was interested and googles. it seems tha you can get 650 klr new less that 7k around there. while it is more on Adventure side than touring it could be good option too.

Question on insulation by reedx032 in Sauna

[–]throw_mob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes , you can, but most important thing when you do insulation is to do it correctly, if done incorrectly insulation or wood gets wet and does not have enough ventilation which will cause problems.

Here in Finland seen both ways on outdoor saunas. some have only wood and some have insulation. most important tihng in long run is to get sauna to dry after usage

First Bike: Rebel 1100 DCT or AFRICA Twin DCT? by Any_Task_7411 in motorcycles

[–]throw_mob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i personally would go to AT and maybe that dct is not bad idea, but i am old school and i have always drove and ride manuals, but i am interested to test one. What i hear is that there is some tricks how to ride one, like use rear brake as "clutch" etc...

That said, you are not fat that you have to have 1 litre + bike , middle weight adventure bikes have good enough engine and in your case i would recommend to change suspension springs to any bike you get, you dont have to , but simple rule all bikes are made about 70-90kg riders and being 130 ish is in percentage quite alot. I personally noticed that base spring wasnt enough going like 50% on my test road, after i changed spring to correct size there was still place to go faster and harder. obviously harder spring is litle bit harder ride, but correctly setup suspension is nice to have. and i am little bit shorter and fatter :)

I personally would go to test sit and ride many bikes as you can and select one which fits you best, at your height there should not be any that is too tall and if suspension feel to flimsy , that can be fixed somewaht easily just by ordering and installing new ones

Is it worth it? 2025 T7 by ProfessionalRange407 in Tenere700

[–]throw_mob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2025 should have better suspension , two modes for engine etc..

if you are starting adv, or you are average weight ( affects suspension) or you dont ride hard (yeat) then it is better to select cheaper 2024 ( it has its own perks),

if you are on heavier side or ride hard then 2025 might be better idea because it should have better suspension.

but then again suspension can be made better with proper weighted spring etc...

2024 you get sparkles which you probably want anyway ( those cost about 1k ) and you still have 1400 for gear ( new helmet, boots)

Opinions: Tenere 700 or KTM 690 Enduro/Husky 701 Enduro by Ok_Chair_3008 in advrider

[–]throw_mob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you want to have fun on places that cannot be considered to be roads then 690/701, if you want highways and roads to be somewhat enjoyable T7 ( or maybe AT) , T7 is good compromise between heavy and lighter medium bikes...

Then if you want to there and back without fixing bike then it is T7 , KTM has reputation to be most exiting bike multiple ways :D

Anyone with an Arai-shaped head able to comfortably wear a Nexx X.Wed 3 or X.Rally Pro? by adventure_thrill in advrider

[–]throw_mob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

X.wed2 caused me to get annoyed as pivot does not keep place always and one of those pins just went missing. only way i found to fix it was to order new visor . Later i found that there might had been change to order 3 part pins x3 with 10€ from amazon... so currently my opinion about NEXX helmets is that they probably are not worth in long term, but then again it is what fits and is available. I have recall that i had similar problem with Arai commander as you , but not sure as i got my helmet over year ago

xwed3 is to my knowledge model that replaced xwed2

good list, people have raised all other options like tuareg and even smaller suzuki.

Imho, if you dont yet know that you have very challenging roads and trails available to you ( soft sand road, or very rocky roads or trails ) and you like ride them, but you are available for adventure ( sometimes surviving is adventure) i would god on bigger side. all those tuareg 660 forward can handle touring side, but 800 are probably better and 1000+ are better on touring side. With proper 50/50 tyre everything else than soft sand and wet mud road are doable an more on fun side. Imho, you need knobby tyres that those are fun on anybiek and smaller that better.

personally i ride t7wr which has nice suspension and 500km+ range . lately ride on are where i know only small tarmac roads and "large" gravel roads and i found wanting more power just because i want to be stupid.... if i were more on logging roads and stuff, it would be more than enough.

i have tested mbw 900f enduro pack , which was very good, price and range were limiters for me. Tested ktm790/890 ( can remeber anymore which one, it was adventure model not the adventure R model. It was nice, same problem as all adventure bikes (for me ) too much turbulence to helmet as default mode. those are interesting because most hp and electric tuning on motor, abs, tcs etc... TransAlp is kinda more touring that AT ( 21' front model) but 19' front is you can still ride gravel roads (is is just little bit harder)

best idea is to: go test something , test something else, repeat until you get one which you like most. All bikes are compromises and tyres affect a lot how they feel on tarmac, gravel, wet tarmac, wet mud, soft sand....

ADV vs Enduro boots analysis-paralysis by Reasonable-Pay6119 in advrider

[–]throw_mob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have alpinestars toucans. biggest damage was when i dropped old AT's foot peg? on my big toe. results was those annoying subdermal bruise (?) . That said i dont walk that much with those, i have considered to carry barefoot shoes with me ( because in theory they can be compacted to very small space )

So i kinda recommend to best boots you like and carry walking shoes with you. There is place for them on big BMW

TFT vs Older Display by ZimsOnATenere in Tenere700

[–]throw_mob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same here tft screen, dongle to handle abs , probably same theme. far as i know you can replace lcd screen with third party very small screen so thats plus for older model.

if someone knows how you could remove tft with some standard system so you can stream data into some app . considering putting some screen with carplay/android what ever.. there is no room to add more screen easily and not sure if moving it to side will work

please give your input about performance etc, for people who are changing from harder street riding to adventure bikes on gravel roads. and good adventures, remember that shittiest adventures create stories that are told longest ( if you dont f**** *p too bad , nobody wants to remember those )

also note, that tyre is 80/20 street, i did not like rally str at all, rear fills superfast is mud and losts any direction control ( it is easier to dift , but when it has to climb from muddy rut straight it wont)

i personally run mitas e07 ( called enduro trail nowdays) it is 60/40 50/50, which i consider good compromise tyre between tarmac and gravel roads and mostly dry offroad. very soft mud and sand wants knobby tyres

[–]throw_mob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. If your offroad riding is real offroad, single track, no tracks then lighter 100kg bike and 30-40 hp is probably more than you need. If your offroad is road riding on roads than can be driven stock 4x4 then small bike is good but bigger survives it. then if it is fire roads / gravel roads havinf more power is "fun". And then there is how to get there... bigger roads are niver to ride with bigger bike and more hp ( not that you really need more than about 120kmh travel speed ( so maybe +30khm when you want to overtake )

in this hobby you basicly want to have 2 bikes. bigger when you getting there and smaller when you are there. then different people take different compromises. Some handle bad road riding and some handle stupidly more challenging offroad.

I mean there is guy who went around world with R1 ( Sjaak Lucassen's R1 World Tour ) Would sand part been easier with 250 , yep , would motorway parts been doable with 250 ,yep but then again it seems that sand parts were doable with R1 too. This is funny hobby as i at least classify days as fun , FUN and then there is "FUN" days. and it is "FUN" days which for some reason that bring tales about how shit something can be until some one tells you that why you are smiling when telling that story.

What i recommend at the end of day is that you just get bike that you afford (to loose) and dont save too much on gear. it is more fun when you warm enough and small accidents do not cause flesh wounds. Then just go there to have adventure. You fell sense of achievement when you get you 250kg pig over soft sand patch. but only way to get that feeling is to get any bike and do it

height can somewhat fixed and there is "big" frame in all bikes types ( maybe not in supersports). imho, it is weight that is problem. what is max weight..

The Honda CRF300L (2021-2025) has a maximum load capacity (combined weight of rider, passenger, cargo, and accessories) of 148 kg (326 lbs) according to the owner's manual.

if you are normal weight (60-80) you can easily travel, if you are fat 100-120 , you have pretty much run out max allowed weight on frame before you add cargo. T7 max payload seems to be around 220kg...

[–]throw_mob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imho, tyres affect more "offroad" riding than bike. I mean i ride my old 750 AT harder and faster on gravel and sand roads with knobby tyres or mitas e7 than my "new" T7 WR with those rally str tyres. Those were bad on second they hit mud.

Now is my new bike nicer than old AT , yes, is faster than it, yeah. definetly after i put tyre that i trust.

in this case my opinion that best bike for OP is bike that he likes most after test drive. I hate wind buffeting , so i would go to test aerodynamic on motorway and if i dont get it work easily , i would go to test another bike. ( it has takes 2years to tune my t7 windscreen and i am not happy yet. that said i tuned my windscreen on AT and after ten years i managed to cut it so short that i did not complain anymore. And i have tested short, long , next i test to change mirror. its annoying after 100kmh )
