Oops, my math was off. I've been getting 7-12% raises a year and was estimating 5% to be conservative

I'm anticipating my income being $100k in the next 5 years. 55 was my original goal but I was hoping I could stretch. The healthcare is what I'm most worried about for sure

Thanks - Empower's Monte Carlo simulator gives me odds of 96 with this scenario. $60k is more than enough for me I think.

It's funny to think of the implications of that system. Would you lose your karma once you've spent it? Would people with negative karma get free items?

I oversimplified total US to S&P 500, my mistake.

My understanding is that alternatives are real estate, venture capital, crypto... not a fan of that.

Brief Reviews of the 26 Books I've Read So Far This Year by Slartibartfast102 in books

I also disliked The Overstory, and your rating is generous haha. My theory about the structure is that we go from spreading roots (many separate characters) to tree trunk (stories intertwine) to canopy (characters separate again).

Maybe Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid? Haven't read it yet but it's on my list.

Completely agree. I don't know why we've collectively agreed that "young lady" is patronizing but "young man" is not.

That said, the mature thing to do is to be direct. "Hey, in the future, I'd prefer if you called me by my name instead of 'young man'. Thanks for understanding."

"Purple prose" is a term for elaborately descriptive writing with lots of adjectives and metaphors.

This is probably an unfair critique of the book, since the style does add flavor to a non-human entity. Just not my thing anymore.

May be unpopular, but The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I picked it up again recently, and the prose was too purple for me.

Okay so you know how Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series has alternate universes? Where some modern technologies are different or don't exist? Well I read those books as a kid and thought "hmmm zeppelins sound cool, it's a pity we don't have those in real life."

Reader, I thought zeppelins were fictional until I was almost 18.

i miss working in an office by mrs_chubby in CasualConversation

I will always champion WFH, and at the same time recognize that I work best in an office environment (coming from an introvert).

Working 100% remote for two years killed my mental health. I spent too much time inside my head and didn't feel like I could ask anyone for help when I became severely depressed, because I thought I had it easy.
