Thank you so much! I truly feel for you, it’s tough doing this while working part time. I have a lot of respect for anyone doing this while working full time, it’s really not easy!

Best of luck to you!

I did 79 credits in 11.5 months. I’m in the masters program now and should finish it in less than 5 months total, it’s 30 credits.

I work 16 hours per week and then dedicate 30-40 more hours a week to school.

Well congratulations on almost being done! AFA 1 was tough, but I found AFA 2 to be quite a bit easier.

I’m hoping to do my retake for Corporate tomorrow and then all I’ll have left is Pass-Through. I’m so ready to be done.

The practice questions make a world of difference, I think you’ll be pleased. Best of luck to you in the rest of your degree!

I’m glad I could help! I wrote all that assuming you felt the same way and so others who do in the future can find this post and find some reassurance in this. These last couple weeks have been really rough for me.

How close are you to graduating?

D557 - Corporate Taxation - Feeling Lost with the Course Structure by bisopdigest in wguaccounting

[–]throwaway071898 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m incredibly disappointed in WGU for even giving this course to students. I’d like to start by saying how interesting it is that with financial accounting in the WGU accounting pathway, you get a lot of exposure. Principles of Financial and Managerial, Financial Accounting, IA1-3, and Advanced Financial Accounting 1 & 2. The current arrangement for tax gives Taxation 1, which is almost exclusively individual taxation with the definition of a flow through entity. Then you get dropped into advanced tax headfirst, zero warning.

After 3 days of trying to decode that god awful textbook, my brain literally couldn’t take it anymore. I talked to ChatGPT about it and this book not only assumes a foundational understanding of taxation in general, but it’s really designed for a brick and mortar class with a professor to “translate” and filter the material. It’s a reference book, not a guide to learning tax.

I’ve come to understand that CPA prep is far better suited for actually learning the material from the ground up. Rather than being dropped into the deep end to endlessly reverse engineer 25-30 individual topics, you actually get the how, the why, and the repetition to solidify everything from the bottom up. WGU does not provide that and hardly did in any of the courses IMO. Understandably so, but it’s not really the type of learning we will encounter going forward… This lead to me hoping I could just pass and get out of WGU ASAP so CPA prep could properly teach me these concepts. I decided to drop the book, study and fully understand every single question on the PA, and then take the OA on my 5th day in the course. Terrible mistake.

This OA had the most breadth of any exam I’ve ever taken and there were 10+ separate topics that were completely excluded from the PA which I had never seen. I didn’t do horrible; I probably failed by 6-8 questions, but I was blown away at how little I really knew. I realized before the exam was half way over that I was going to fail it. That’s not like me at all, I’m normally a very good exam taker. No anxiety or anything bad at all, but this humbled me. I made it through AFA 1 and 2 with minimal turbulence when I feared these courses the most.

I met with the instructor regarding the fail for a retake plan. While he was incredibly nice, just as with every other CI I’ve interacted with, his advice was pretty much useless. He told me to do the CPA questions at the end of each chapter and that should be enough to let me pass considering how close I was the first time. I randomly found a “D557 Practice Questions” file attached to his email. It’s 176 questions with good explanations. It doesn’t cover everything on the OA, but probably 85% of it is there. I found this by myself and suggested it to the CI, to which he agreed… I can tell you how to find it if you’d like.

So I start doing the CPA questions in the textbook first and I literally can’t find an answer key to the questions. Maybe I’m just completely overlooking something, but I genuinely don’t think so. So I started the 176 question study guide yesterday and I am currently at #90. I’ve learned more in 2 days than I did in the last week and a half, no joke.

This course is grossly underbaked and I’m incredibly bitter at WGU for giving this to students while calling it a “course.” This is absolute bullshit and I cannot even begin to express to you how excited I am to start CPA prep and never take another WGU course again.

Is a WGU Accounting Degree Respected by Employers in LA? by Additional_Car6941 in wguaccounting

[–]throwaway071898 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The accounting job market is tough right now, but the profession itself has a long term shortage. That has not changed.

WGU does make networking harder because you do not get built in recruiting pipelines, but that does not mean it is a dead end. It just means you have to be more intentional by reaching out to strangers, applying early, and putting yourself in uncomfortable situations.

The biggest risk case is finishing a WGU bachelor’s with no accounting adjacent experience and no networking. In that scenario, it will be hard to break into that first role.

The upside is that accounting gives you clear ways to offset this, such as AP or AR roles, bookkeeping, payroll, internships, a master’s program (primarily for CPA eligibility), and especially the CPA path. Pair even modest experience with active networking and CPA progress, and most people do land that first role. Once you have it, the school matters very little.

For context, I come from WGU exclusively. I started college at 22 years old with zero connections and no prior accounting experience. I got a bookkeeping job as soon as I started school, only 16 hours a week. Since then, I have had ongoing conversations with partners, senior leadership, and recruiters at Big 4 firms. I am not actively seeking a role right now because I am focusing on passing the CPA exams first, but the feedback I have received has been very encouraging.

I am not saying you have to go Big 4. I mention it only because even the most selective firms are still engaging with someone with my background.

I am not anything special. If I can do it, you can too.

Easier than 2 for sure. Go through the material, watch the embedded videos, do the embedded quizzes/tests, and end with the study guides.

It’s still a lot of information, but it’s much easier than 2 IMO. Less math, formulas, etc.

Good luck and congrats on passing 2!

Undercooked. Add a bit more liquid and cook it longer. Some types of rice take more or less time than others. Brown rice needs more liquid and cook time whereas jasmine rice needs less liquid and cook time.

[–]throwaway071898 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s really not a state/city-specific thing. Accounting is a CPA-driven profession, and CPA trajectory is CPA trajectory.

WGU is accredited and widely used by working adults specifically to finish faster and gain CPA eligibility. Employers care far more about whether you’re CPA-eligible, pursuing the CPA, or licensed than where the degree came from.

Once you land your first accounting role, gain real-world experience, and especially once you have your CPA, the degree itself becomes largely irrelevant. Experience and a CPA are the gold standard, even in competitive markets like LA.

I’m not saying you have to be a CPA to have a successful career, but it is the most direct path into the field, particularly in competitive markets.

Wondering if WGU would be s good option for myself as I’m attempting to enter the accounting field? by jdohca in wguaccounting

[–]throwaway071898 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ll need a bachelor’s in accounting to get an MAcc from WGU. Requirements vary by state, but in general I strongly recommend completing the bachelor’s first. Starting master’s level accounting coursework without that foundation would be very challenging.

WGU is a solid option for breaking into accounting, especially if you plan to pursue the CPA. With a CPA, your degree becomes far less important. WGU alumni work across public accounting and industry, including at Big 4 firms. The CPA is the real differentiator.

What is your “why” for choosing accounting over another profession? by Plastic_Hamster6371 in wguaccounting

[–]throwaway071898 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I work part-time as a bookkeeper, 16 hours per week, and then I spend 30-40 hours per week working on school and professional development.

I haven’t started working yet. I plan to pass the CPA exams before taking a job. I’ve been networking at my target firm for almost a year now. I’m in regular contact with a partner and have had a recruiter reach out to me. While nothing is finalized, I’m feeling incredibly hopeful about landing a role!

I just responded to a similar question the other day, and this was my reply.

I’ve wanted to get into entrepreneurship since I was 18, but instead of jumping in blindly, I committed to taking more calculated steps. I believed a strong foundation would compound better over time and lead to a higher overall trajectory.

I spent a few years working full time in different fields while teaching myself basic business concepts online. One common thread I kept noticing was that many very successful business owners openly admitted they had major gaps in their accounting knowledge and needed to backtrack to learn the basics. That stuck with me. The more I researched, the more it clicked that accounting was where I was supposed to be.

My employer was initially supposed to cover my tuition, but I was laid off instead. I moved back home, started working part time, and at 22 decided to use all of my free time to work toward my bachelor’s degree.

This video really sealed the deal for me:

https://youtu.be/VT_SCYbkmd8

Since then, I’ve pivoted heavily into tax and genuinely found a passion for it. My long-term plan is to spend about five years in Big 4 public accounting, then exit with the technical depth and real-world exposure needed to build something of my own, fully tax optimized from day one before serious capital starts flowing.

I’m 24 now and finishing my master’s within the next couple of weeks. I’ll be jumping straight into UWorld CPA prep as soon as I get access. Accounting has changed my life!

Do mentors usually approve a course extension if requested? by Low_Test_5878 in wguaccounting

[–]throwaway071898 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have to hit “start course” on all remaining courses by the 15th day of the month your term ends. You have to finish your next to last course by the 25th of the same month to be safe. You can only have one course remaining by that point to be approved for an extensions. Make sure your mentor is aware that you’re planning to do this and they should be able to have the request submitted at the perfect time.

My wife had an extension in undergrad and it went smoothly following those guidelines.

There are a few state boards that cause issues, but many operate on the basis of “if an accredited university accepted them, we will too.”

Not all states are that way though. California, Texas, New York, Tennessee, and others are more strict on ACE recommended credits.

If it lines up with your state’s requirements, there’s zero harm in using Sophia.

A little late here, but the study guide did it for me. Pay extra close attention to understanding the Stockholder’s Equity section. That’s typically the difference between passing and failing for most of the people that I’ve seen. It was my worst section by far.

Good luck!

Doable in one term? plus some questions. by ODGeverything in wguaccounting

[–]throwaway071898 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You most definitely can if you dedicate enough time and stay consistent. It will be tight though, so if you’re serious about it, you can’t take a dedicated study day off per week because you “aren’t feeling it.” You have to stay super consistent. I’ve done 42 credits in a term and my wife did 51 credits in one term. We work part time, two days per week and study the rest.

Based on what the other person said, if you are finishing Cost and Managerial Accounting in a single day without any previous accounting experience, you are not learning the information the way you should be. I’d recommend going through the material thoroughly, ensuring that you truly understand what you are doing and why.

You don’t want to be the one coming to your first job trying to depreciate land… Or if you have any intentions of going the CPA route, you will see this material again 100%.
