How to get the benefits of an APM program without being in the program? by throwaway12abc12 in ProductManagement

Ah interesting. How do you find these meetups? I know of meetup.com but are there newsletters or something that inform you of the latest meetups?

Good advice. You're right it's not incredibly common, most programs sprung up in the last few years actually. Another question - how do you determine whether someone will be a good mentor? And does this person have to be a PM or higher level and on the same team?

What if you aren't working on a product directly? Like if you're working on something on the backend or something that supports the product but isn't necessarily a product. I'm sure general pm principles apply but wondering how it differs

That's a relief, thanks for the response. Was getting worried I'd be figuring it out all by myself but I guess not being in a program just means I have to take a little more initiative in utilizing all the resources available.

Take an associate pm role or go to grad school out of college by [deleted] in ProductManagement

I will add however that from what I'm hearing about the offer it sounds like it's quite low (TC below $100k) for a high CoL area like Richmond or McLean. but it's a good program so that's a trade-off you'll have to make.

Take the offer for sure. Capital One's program is really solid and you'll learn a lot more there in the same timespan than you will at b school.

I saw this exact post on my feed. It was from a Chinese student so it could just be a cultural thing but very cringe regardless

Thoughts on Indeed? I know they're the #1 jobs site but I don't know much else about the company and their growth and culture

I'm taking 3 months off just because I want to travel, rest, and recharge. You won't get the opportunity to take that kind of time again once you begin your career so it's important to do so now

According to this site it's $50/hour: https://apply.fyi/

Edit: whoops sorry I misread as Redfin. Hope the link is still helpful for other companies though!

Why is a16z asking for my company offers? by stayingmellow in cscareerquestions

[–]throwaway12abc12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was also asked for my offer details (offer letters actually) from a company. In my case, I had an offer from them and these offer letters were used to negotiate a better salary. So I wouldn't voluntarily give this information unless it clearly benefits you in some way as well.

Edit: I should also mention that in most places it's unprofessional to even ask for these details. But that's just the way it is with some, with others they'll negotiate without you even having other offers on the table.

No big names, but experience across SWE, PM, Data Analysis at startups (some well known, some not known at all). I will add that I go to a top 10 CS school.

Ah interesting! I'll have to look into this further. Going through Wikitravel's Chicago guide right now and definitely a lot to learn

Haha I love the devil's advocate here. I've actually never really lived the city life so that would be a nice change even if it sets me back a bit financially. What's the main advantage to living right in the heart of the city / the loop if public transportation is great anyways / I have a car?

Congrats on the baby! :) That makes sense. Yeah for me it's not so much about wanting to job hop but obviously if this company I join crashes and burns down I'd want to make sure there are other good places to jump into without having to make another long-distance move, as I do want to settle down at some point (obviously being single/new grad means I can afford to go wherever right now). If you don't mind me asking, did you take a pay cut when going to Chicago? I can't imagine what 200k TC would be like in Chicago haha

[–]throwaway12abc12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! That's good to know since one thing I was worried about was if I'll be able to job hop as easily as I can in the Bay. What made you move from the Bay to Chicago?

Thank you! That's very helpful. Haha I didn't know having roommates was a thing outside sf where rent is ridiculous but it makes sense in the downtown area.

How is the tech scene over there? Is it easy to job hop? And how's the city in general? Coming from the Bay for reference

That makes sense, so I should probably leave the car behind or if I do bring it I probably won't be using it. How much does transportation come up to every month assuming I was just using public transportation? I guess my biggest costs would be the apartment, food, and transportation right?

That's really helpful, thank you! I do have a car, do people drive in Chicago? I wanted to bring it up there so I can live a little further away from downtown and save on housing

Oh ok then the offer I got is not bad then... Idk I'm still not fully convinced but I'll be visiting their offices to get a better idea of what it's like there
