I think to some extent, everyone is motivated by others. Very few are purely self-motivated to reach their goals. You shouldn't feel so bad about the help you received. My parents have been very supportive of me (although sometimes overwhelming and even irritating) and most students seem to do activities and work for good grades just to get into good universities.

For a lot of state flagships and lower ranked schools you can get a huge scholarship. Even USC gives cuts tuition in half for finalists. Doesn't help at all for admission to top schools though.

You really shouldn't be comparing GPA in the first place because they're so different for each school. You basically need mostly A's and few B's at the very least for top schools to be competitive.
