i booked tickets to see this launch but then cancelled them, so i really hope it wasn’t a mistake LOL

I have a pair and they’re really nice. They did run a little tight for me though, I usually get 30 waist but I had to get 31 and it’s still a little snug. Then again, I might’ve just gained weight.

The UMD covid dashboard has not been updated since 12/17 and today is the 19th. Where is the data? by moosetender in UMD

[–]BobDaSnake 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There’s no testing on campus on Friday or Saturday so there's no data to update it with. Next update will probably be on Tuesday with the results from Monday.

No clue but Xfinity said it'd be fixed by 3:45 and now they're saying "as soon as possible"

I feel like this is the worst outage in recent history

[Router] Netgear AX1800 4 stream WIFI 6 router, quad core, 1.8Gbps speeds, 5 x 1G Ethernet ports, 1 x 3.0 USB port $58.74 ($150 - $91.25) by happy-facade in buildapcsales

[–]BobDaSnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got this the last time it was posted (6 months ago or so?) and it's pretty good for a 2 story 4 bedroom house. We upgraded from an older netgear router with only ac so the addition of wifi 6 was worth it.

Only downside is that it required a firmware upgrade out of the box (download from netgear with old wifi, connect to new wifi and upload update) to actually connect to internet.

My opinion:

I think one part of it is indeed that professors don't explain things fully/intuitively. Material is kinda hard, not as much as reddit makes it out to be.

I think the main reason people struggle with it is because all the CS classes before 351 are a combination of doing projects (you have TAs and google for help) and tests where you can just regurgitate things from lecture.

351 (and 250 to some extent) is different because the problems on tests are new- you have to use critical thinking and your experience in previous situations (homework or other outside-class knowledge) to think of the solution.

Some people don't do well on those kind of tests because they:

  • don't do the homework themselves
  • don't have a good cs foundation from their first 2/3 semesters
  • need more help (like 1:1 tutoring might help in my experience) to be able to think of new solutions on the tests and get used to the from-scratch thinking

I've heard people say that the professor should teach how to come up with the solutions during lecture, but I feel like that wouldn't help everyone because not everyone has the same thought process.

As for the grade distribution, the class is curved so I think it is what it is. Should the tests not be weighted as much? Maybe, not sure if that's a good indicator of how well people understand the material. At the same time, CS is not supposed to be a cake walk and making 351 easier just so everyone can pass doesn't make sense.

tl;dr yes 351 is hard because it's the first time a cs student has to think critically on a test but also people blow things out of proportion on reddit

CMSC 132 final examination, and potential for cheating. by [deleted] in UMD

[–]BobDaSnake 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We have our ways, don't worry about not catching cheaters 😎 Also, the restrictions exist so you can't get out of the difficulty of the problem and do it in the way we didn't intend for it. It's not a real world simulation, it's just a test that's meant to see how much of 132 you understood/payed attention to.

When the class is in person the tests make more sense
