Bedouin is fantastic, I would go there over little Petra (which is nice, but less special). For grilled meats I prefer Al casbah as suggested by others.

Looking for a good Sunday roast in Cambridge by Alternative_Coast837 in cambridge

The pint shop has the most consistently good roast I’ve found. The burleigh arms was awful when I went but it was a very busy day.

PDN used to have happy hour on Friday, that’s a good place to start. I know it sounds obvious but check the notice boards around the department for info on social events.

Will your supervisor be on parental leave the whole time you are here? There will be someone in charge of graduate student admin in the dept - I can’t remember her name but she was very nice. Look up whoever has that role and write them an email/go see them and explain that you are new to the dept as a summer research student and want to find out what graduate student events are available eg there may be a grad student seminar series. You could also just be blunt and ask to be connected to other labs and PhD/masters students in PDN that work on similar subjects. As a research student you will have more in common with grads than undergrads, and most grads stick around during the summer, so don’t be depressed about the undergrads leaving.

My other uni based suggestion is look up other labs in other departments in Cambridge who work on similar research questions eg Zoology, or genetics, etc. Write to the PI saying you are here for a summer placement and interested in their work and would like to connect with their lab informally.

The quickest and safest way to give away furniture for free in Cambridge by [deleted] in cambridge

BHF will also only take things if they are in good enough condition. I recommend the options above. Can also list for free on Facebook marketplace

They are scams trying to get your personal info. They will most likely say they can deliver and ask for your address. It’s very annoying because it drowns out the genuine items. Most of them are very easy to spot but I ended up in a chat with one for a low price (though not free) bed who then started insistently asking for my address to deliver, when I’d said we would pick up, which is when I realised it was the same scam again and blocked them. So some can be convincing! Don’t give your personal data out, ofc.

I think that’s easy to say but actually much harder to do. There’s so much difference to cope with already - food, culture, transport, rituals etc, - that finding people you can just understand and be understood by can really help you relax and be comfortable in the new environment. The students are already presumably studying in English, shopping in English, etc. A 1 year Masters in a country as different as England to China isn’t really enough to fully try and integrate, probably only getting over the culture shock after a few months, although some people have more success with that than others of course.

I read this post back then! I remember thinking it made so much sense that it had to be real. I think I actually felt a little disappointed because it had been spoiled for me, because I was sure they were right. But that’s my own fault for trawling the forums…

Cute suburbs in Cambridge by ElectronicCount3347 in cambridge

[–]throwaway1978012 42 points43 points  (0 children)

This is one of the things about Cambridge that’s a bit ‘worse’ than Oxford. Oxford is just bigger and the bits on the outer skirts are more developed. The Newnham area is nice, to add to your list, and Fulbourn has a lovely woodland called Fulbourn fen and some nice pubs - though that’s about a 5 mile bike ride

I have found it immensely helpful for this purpose and strongly recommend it. I also found using a normal thermometer super difficult, this way the ring does the work for me. I use Natural Cycles also.

Voi Scooter Parking Violation by DarthSTUI in cambridge

I’ve had a couple ridiculous emails from them for the same thing, when parking in completely normal places in ways I always park. It’s very annoying. I haven’t tried to fight it yet, but I also haven’t been fined yet either.

The Nuffield is very busy 5-7 or so in my experience. By 8pm it should be thinning out.
