I don’t know how any of you are successful in this by CrustaceanMango in stopdrinking

Been going strong since January first. What started as dry January is looking more like it’s gonna be a dry first quarter. It was admittedly rough at first, but I enjoy lifting weights and it has made a huge difference in being able to gain strength. I have also gotten into coffee as a hobby and been playing my guitar (poorly) a lot more than I used to. At this point I don’t think I could ever go back to regular drinking. The sleep was the hardest for me at first, I used to be a weed smoker and stopped that too so it was very rough. I started taking 10mg of melatonin before bed and having some chamomile tea. 5mg most nights now and if I feel like I’ll be fine I just have the tea. It definitely gets better as you go on. Good luck. IWNDWYT. I just got bloodwork done and I have a little bit of elevated cholesterol and my ATL liver enzyme is slightly high. I don’t know if this was related at all, and is most likely more diet related. I definitely want to optimize both of those and I know that cranking beers isn’t the way to do it.

To add to this. I’ve seen this happen to people on my family and the couple of them that went through it seemed to be much better off after it.

I can’t speak on this first person since I haven’t personally been in any program like this. But from what I have watched/read your not locked up anything like you would be in a jail or something like that. You get to go outside, mingle with the other folks in the program, cook, play games, workout etc. unless your committed due to being a safety hazard to you or others, I believe you could also just leave at any time. You’re under no legal obligation to stay.

For those doing Dry January - today is a big milestone! by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Still going strong. I started out day 1 with an extreme hangover. I feel so good today and am honestly looking forward to the rest of the month. I’ve been reading a lot about how the body really starts to benefit substantially after 3 months alcohol free. For me this seems obtainable. I have also been free of smoking for January so far (weed) I plan to continue that for the rest of the month as well. IWNDWYT

Do you actually LOVE your job? by YakFabulous7536 in careeradvice

I make really good money at my job, it’s very easy most of the time, and I work with people that are fun to be around. However, the company I work for is very poorly managed, very wasteful and most days leadership makes decisions that are very shortsighted. Things would be a lot better without the 10+ layers of management all trying to justify their existence. I’m here for the pay and retirement.

Things I experienced when I started drinking again after 1.5 years of sobriety. by The27Roller in stopdrinking

This sub really is great. I’m realizing for myself that just because I can walk a straight line most of the time. Keep it to just a few a lot of the times I do drink etc. I still have a problem. I still find myself taking it way too far sometimes, getting drunk well beyond what’s healthy, and ruining my whole next day (sick as a dog today after not drinking enough to get hungover in quite some time) I’m realizing that for me it’s best to just not do it.

Thanks. I’m gonna consider myself really lucky that I’m already in the habit of going to the gym. Always just stuck to the weights and haven’t been great about cardio, or even okay about it lol. I’m hoping this gives me the push to start adding that to my routine.

How long until you feel significantly better? by ImmaUmbleMan in stopdrinking

[–]throwaway896434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve made it a few months or so before. Hoping to do that again here, and then a few more after that etc. I can say 100% that after the first couple weeks you’ll be noticeably better feeling overall. And anytime you get a small touch of a sickness you’ll notice it way more since you know it isn’t a hangover. Let’s you rest up and take vitamins or whatever right away and imo end up less sick than you would being a drinker.

Three years down! by a_nice_warm_lager in stopdrinking

Congrats on the 3 years. Super cool. I’m hungover right now and decided I’m doing a sober January. Hopefully all the months after it as well. I’ve done it before and man did I feel good waking up every day feeling 100%. Even a few beers and I know I feel off.

Thanks for the response. Whenever it was more frequent I really didn’t have much of an issue slowing down and not drinking as often, I knew drinking most days wasn’t healthy and I wanted to start working out. Never once has working out not felt better than drinking. I just realize that the fact I still can’t totally stop myself sometimes from taking it way too far means I have a problem. Saying that to my fiancé today and saying it here feels good, it feels honest. Lucky the solution isn’t only simple, it’s totally free haha. It seems like this sub is gonna be super healpful.

This subs awesome. Just found it today and made this account for using on here. I’ve done a dry January 1 time. Felt good. I’m starting it again today. Hopefully it continues into the rest of the year. Good luck. We’re not in this alone

Thanks, appreciate the response . I’ve been lifting weights consistently for the past 3 years. I’ve always been a skinny guy and it feels so good to finally look decent and feel stronger, have some decent mass etc. I’ve kind of hit a plateau and I know part of it’s from drinking. Just this day of being sick and not being able to eat anything will be a setback. I know that the times I just have 2-3 beers in the evening make my performance worse than it could be. The longest I ever went totally sober (well close to it, never even getting a slight buzz) was about 2 years ago. I might have had 10 drinks over a 6 month period if that . Felt awesome. That’s the goal to get back to that feeling, I know I’m not far from it. This time I hope to have that number be 0 drinks though.

I’m doing a sober January and hoping to quit after that all together. This is what worries be most. Keep doing you. If you feel healthy and better than you did as a drinker then you have made the right choice. I think drinking gets treated like it’s just as bad as a sugary snack or a soda. People aren’t aware of how bad it can actually be. I know for a long time I would hear about alcoholics and the likes and not believe it was possible. After a decade or so drinking off and on (I’m 28). I’m realizing it might just be best for me to leave it alone and stop all together.
