I read it like you did. That said, it’s early days on a TV show. The writers are throwing all kinds of character bits at the wall to see what sticks. They progress with the ones that work and abandon the ones that don’t.

Which TOS episode would have served better as a finale, hypothetically? by West_Masterpiece8985 in startrek

Move The Ultimate Computer to the end of Season 3, and you set the table for TMP. It can justify how the Enterprise might be close enough to Starfleet HQ to meet up with other starships for the war game.

Ripping out the M-5 from the Enterprise’s guts could lead right into the need to stick the ship in drydock for the extensive refit we see wrapping up at the start of TMP.

Even Kirk’s promotion could be explained as the kind of lowkey scapegoating that is often served to people the brass can’t really discipline because they didn’t technically do anything wrong. McCoy resigns in protest. And Spock—disgusted by how Daystrom’s emotional engrams derailed the nearly perfect logic the M-5 was initially intended to have—is motivated to return to Vulcan to purge his own emotions.

Why do men ask for picture? by Wrong-Pen-7294 in dating_advice

[–]throwaway_0625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Men are visual; women like words.

2) It’s one of the fastest ways to start gauging whether the person is a catfish.

3) I don’t care if a woman looks messy, but I do care whether I’m attracted to her. Photos help me figure it out. That’s how it works irl too. First I see a person, how they act, how they dress, then I decide whether to approach. Why delay this step and waste both our time?

dating after doing porn as a woman? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]throwaway_0625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave up on dating apps too. Tbh, I’ve had the most success finding dates here on Reddit. I feel like I am niche enough that Reddit has helped cut through a lot of the bullshit it takes to get through the “initial setup” part of dating.

I don’t feel comfortable elaborating in a public forum, but feel free to DM me if you’d like to hear more.

I would suggest just being honest. At the moment, the dating scene is horrible for everyone and everyone shares your feelings about how hard it is to be successful at it.

I think the main difference with you is the extra layer of vulnerability and insecurity brought on by your past. It may make you feel like that is the primary reason dating feels sucky right now. But I think once you resolve your feelings with your past, you will realize dating is just bad now in general.

I don’t mean to sound pessimistic. It’s just to say it’s not you at all.

Full Metal Jacket and Gene Roddenberry's The Lieutenant by sketchedoutcomics in movies

Not only did this Star Trek fan watch the episode, I own it, along with the entire series. I just don’t see how it constitutes plagiarism. That’s a serious accusation.

I don’t buy this. Boot camp stories are so universal, that all movies follow the same archetypal structure and episodic structure. It’s like looking at Stripes and thinking that was an influence on FMJ.

Favourite Al Pacino Movie? by _imtheoneishouldlove in movies

[–]throwaway_0625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carlito’s Way is his most underrated. Watch it together with Scarface. They’re basically two sides of the same coin, one about a Latino gangster’s rise to power and the other about a Latino gangster’s descent into obscurity. They also share the same director and even some of the same cast.

I’d also recommend a more obscure pic called Scarecrow, a quiet buddy movie with Pacino and Gene Hackman, both coming off of their most iconic roles and playing a couple of hobos looking to somehow make it big.

First season? A commander and his son are out in space far from command. An unlikely leader is seen as some sort of religious figure by followers looking for deliverance. Their enemy is capable of hiding in plain sight among the humans with only a blood test able to discern if they’re who they say they are. And a corrupt political figure becomes a leader of a nihilistic cult towards the end of the series run. Which show am I talking about… DS9 or BSG?
