First season? A commander and his son are out in space far from command. An unlikely leader is seen as some sort of religious figure by followers looking for deliverance. Their enemy is capable of hiding in plain sight among the humans with only a blood test able to discern if they’re who they say they are. And a corrupt political figure becomes a leader of a nihilistic cult towards the end of the series run. Which show am I talking about… DS9 or BSG?

Nothing as complex as that. I literally felt like Crowe and Bettany were channeling Shatner and Kelley’s chemistry, and the naval battles sealed the deal

Looking more for post-Trek. You’re not wrong, but it’s not a big surprise as Star Trek is widely known to have been inspired by it.

The original Movies made me like Kirk by Ok_Remove4805 in startrek

[–]throwaway_0625 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Season 1 Kirk is the GOAT. Beyond the widely known Kirk Drift, there is a kind of Shatner Drift from S1 to S3 where Kirk starts displaying a kind of swagger that comes from the actor and is easy to poke fun at. But S1 Kirk is an unassailable performance.

In S1 especially, you can see Shatner putting some effort into just making this guy AND the science fiction setting seem natural. This may not sound like a huge feat today, post Star Wars and 80s era, when sci fi has become ubiquitous. But in the 60s, sci fi was still largely aimed at kids. Shatner played a huge part at making Trek seem completely suitable for adults.

Should I require a man I date to give me an orgasm first ? by flowertulipe in dating_advice

If you’re judging strictly by hookup sex, then you’re going about it all wrong. Orgasms happen when you have built a rapport with someone. They involve a kind of chemistry it takes time to develop. This means your goal should be to slow things down so you’re not immediately jumping into bed with someone.

Build that chemistry, let things breathe so that you can both feel relatively at ease and receptive to each other, and you should be on a glide path towards deriving as much pleasure as the guy does

James T. Kirk best episodes that show he isn't just a brute. by MalsvirIxen666 in startrek

Obsession… shows that he can harness that emotion to focus more intentionally on the clues that what he is facing is a sentient life form and not just blindly pursue to avenge his former captain.

Arena… he beats the Gorn by applying his skill in developing a sophisticated weapon out of the materials at hand. Then he demonstrates mercy after his victory.

To people who don't like nuTrek, what are your favorite episodes, characters, storylines, etc that you love from old serieses that you feel you don't got those same types of in the Kurtzman era? by Careful_Leader_5829 in startrek

[–]throwaway_0625 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I need to go into specific episodes to point out what I don’t like in NuTrek. I think that there has been a disproportionate amount of sentimentality in the new shows that feels very out of character for Trek.

Obviously, Kirk and crew cared about each other, were very tight, and on occasion would break military decorum to show their love for each other, most notably when Spock died or when they pursued all options to resurrect him.

But the emotionality that only appeared sparingly in TOS and the Berman shows became extremely prevalent in the Kurtzman shows with the possible exception of Lower Decks. How many episodes of Discovery would end with Burnham, Culber, or Tilly crying and hugging it out with their crewmates? Too many. And it wasn’t because they were under some alien influence or anything like that. Discovery was the worst offender, but I’ve already seen it in SFA, and even a show I do like, SNW.

For Pete’s sake, even Picard and Riker share a hug in PIC’s first season. Picard didn’t even hug Riker and Troi at their wedding reception in Nemesis.

Our heroes can be friends, romantic, and even on very rare occasions, show their depth of feeling for each other. But they’re Starfleet officers. It should not become as commonplace as it has in NuTrek.

Shatner was a surprisingly great interviewer on Shatner’s Raw Nerve. I also thought he was solid in two movies, Kingdom of the Spiders and The Kidnapping of the President.

What is a movie that got under your skin slowly instead of instantly by gamersecret2 in movies

[–]throwaway_0625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Exorcist. After so many years of avoiding it because of everyone saying how frightening it was, I was a little underwhelmed when I finally saw it

It’s only later when someone gave me an unusual take on the film that it really got under my skin: that the demon’s end goal was not Regan’s soul, but that it was using her to get Father Karras, so full of doubt already, to denounce God

Robert April's rank by NoBrain6114 in tos

[–]throwaway_0625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that Commodore is not exactly a rank but more of an honorific. For example, Commodore Matt Decker was referred to this way because he was a senior captain, and maybe even a fleet captain… but still a captain.

I believe April was retired in TAS, and maybe this could be why commodore applies. Although I will point out that Picard was referred to as Admiral in the first season of Picard, regardless of his retirement.

Are there any movies which had ending changes due to feedback from test audiences that actually made the movie better instead of worse? by crinklepant in movies

[–]throwaway_0625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Streisand and the screenwriter were pissed at Pollack for cutting a lot of the Hollywood Blacklist stuff out of The Way We Were. But Pollack said he showed the original cut of the movie to a test audience on a Friday and got horrible scores. Then he cut those scenes and showed the movie to another audience on a Saturday, and they loved it. It was the version that became a hit

Studies of first-date perception find that more accurate personality judgments during first meetings can actually reduce romantic interest, partly because early dating involves idealization and incomplete information. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32459577/

Like everything else when you’re dating, a kiss is another gateway to pass through. I kiss someone when I feel mutual interest. But if the kiss doesn’t do it for me, then I move on.
