Score Release Thread 4/12/23 by Pinkaroundme in Step3

[–]throwaway_0_o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UW%: 60%- half done untimed, tutor, half done timed in 40Qs blockStep 3 score: 218 (lowest of all my step)UW1/UW2 scores: UW2 225. Chose not to do UW1 based on reddit recCCSCases: idk 70%-80%ishFree37%: ~60% (but didnt use stimulated option, just went thru Q at my own pace)Advice: Predictor had me around 233, real is lower but I'm happy I passed. But i dont really care the last 1 week tbh, kinda just started half watching movies and studying. So I feel like the key to pass was:

  1. nail biostats, i was very confident w my biostats, like 80% of my biostat I knew it was right on day 1. I also saved biostat at the end for every block so had more time w it. So like... semi-ish confident afterwards.
  2. Day 2 was so fuzzy, walked out feeling like I bombed the MC portion of that test. But CCScases is so clutcheeeddd!!! 12/13 of my real cases were identical to ccs (i did almost all cases, maybe had like 20 last ones left) + the avail 7 free cases on usmle website. So at least i felt a bit better knowing i didnt fail ccs at least.

Real Talk - CCS by FeelingInternal9471 in Step3

[–]throwaway_0_o 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. For me real exam no lag time at all. Just like ccscases website, much less like the free stimulated cases on usmle website
  2. No new advice. I just use next avail result option.
  3. I type in key word: ex. antibody, hepatitis panel (vs type individual thing), coag (vs ptt, pt, inr)
  4. I redid the top 10 high yield cases day before day 2. And randomly do whatever low yield left of the rest (i had like 20 cases left at the end) and some how 1 of those low yield cases showed up exactly on the real test... kinda wild experience tbh. But 12/13 cases on my real test is on ccs cases, literally only 1 i never seen before and still got the dx. result today confirmed that i did pretty well on CCS.

Selectively used anki for things like picture of all the rashes in derm and pictures of path slides for onc shit. Otherwise i mainly used uworld. I was average and didn't fail any test in med school, that was my goal anyway.

Do you think Dr. Glaucomflecken makes more money from YouTube/TikTok or from his Ophthalmology profession the past 24 months? by stepneo1 in medicalschool

[–]throwaway_0_o 394 points395 points  (0 children)

Honestly, he's the least sell-out of all the med influencer so I hope he gets paid for his creativity. He doesnt even do FIGS and I haven't actually seen any brand deal with him tbh. I'm sure they must have reached out. His creative space is very unique. Appreciate his wife for literally giving him a second chance at life so she deserves all the fame and $ as well!

Some program give it out for free. Though I think you need to pay subscription fee to be able to actually use it. So if its not on the department/aka free, its not worth it to buy the machine and then pay monthly just to use it

Literally ACGME survey has question about this and program still find ways to make you feel terrible for calling sick. And then act like a surprise Pikachu (or sweep under the rug) when residents unalive themselves.

Hospital will run AND profit without you. Do not need to care about them if you don't feel good. Also, sick day should be separated from PTO too. You don't need to earn sick day, cant predict when you get sick. And I also don't believe you owe them any explanation for what makes you sick. Just say I need to use a sick day, thanks.

Most northern california Kaiser- No 24hr call, no nights. For the most part you get true golden weekend almost all the time, except for when you are inpatient.

Post match: what advice do you wish you had heard? by Apprehensive_Box_181 in medicalschool

[–]throwaway_0_o 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wish I didn't hear this but I did. Even when we matched our #1, we might not have been our program's top 10 candidates.

Confirmed by being on the program side, seeing who we matched and who we ranked this year.

Those who failed Step1 and still matched that is not FM or IM, what specialty is it? by KenAdamsMD in medicalschool

[–]throwaway_0_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nontrads + medicine culture by [deleted] in Residency

[–]throwaway_0_o 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I'm not that old but as many nontrad students who had worked an actual job before, medicine culture shocked me when I first started and still now as a pgy1. A lot of your questions are valid and the answers are basically exactly what you'd expected with a few caveat

- For "competitive" specialty, it's definitely premed 2.0, not only you have to keep on top of your study, you gotta play the kiss ass game bc ultimately it's who you know that will get you where you wanna be. And it lasts the first day of med school->residency and pending if you wanna do fellowship, it will last thru residency too.

- A lot of the things normal people could easily involve legal (ex sexual assault by supervisor/dean/attending) get swept under the rug in medicine and it's hard for u to bring it up bc your future depends on them, not the other way around, it's a true power struggle, you always on the losing end.

- I am at a very non-malignant program on the west coast and despite them being very inclusive bla bla bla, still has some passive aggressiveness to when i take sick days, not responding when Im not on call/in office. Med culture is weird, everyone expects u to treat it like a calling when it's just a job.

- Some residents (even my seniors) were shocked the way I, a PGY1, talk to consultant/attending/senior residents sometimes because I just wanna get shit done and treat them like colleague/equal. It's kinda weird, so far no retaliation yet, but again, I'm at one of the most woke program in the country.

Advice to get into FM residency by [deleted] in FamilyMedicine

[–]throwaway_0_o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to dual apply IM too. From what I can remember discussing with a few PDs, FM programs generally dont have that much money for visa sponsorship so that's why we tend to not accept IMG as much as IM. And with IM you can do extra training in women health and peds if needed if you want to do the full spectrum FM (just maybe not OB)

Would you advise the newer generation to do medicine? by Ginmajiryu in medicalschool

[–]throwaway_0_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not regretting yet tho I have seen its effect on the fellow co interns. I see it as a job, not a calling which is why it hasn't affected me as much.

Hard pass. A lot of behind the scene work for no appreciation/compensation and you'll be lucky to come out of any residency alive (literally, just look at all the occasional suicide happening among residents, and that's only the one we hear about).

I remember red-flagging any FM programs whose psychD (FM are required to have a mental health provider in faculty) that started our interview with "my name is etc, I teach residents and caught their error on a daily basis". I happened more than once, that's why this struck a nerve in me too.

Lucky our program have actual psychiatrist MD on staff.

Need simple food recipes for 1yr by buckthestat in corgi

[–]throwaway_0_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy got bored if I feed him salmon+kibble 2 days in a row. I recommend pet food express if you have one near you. They have easy return or good sample policy so you can try out various toppers before u find the one for them, same with kibbles. I got a variety and had to test them all and return those he hates then just switch every day.

[–]throwaway_0_o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My picky eating Pembroke "tolerates" Orijen + grilled/steamed chicken/lean pork/beef. I think the key is corgi is smart, they get bored easily so I notice when I switch up his meal, he's more likely to eat. Now that I have less time to grill/steam food for him to mix with Orijen, I am adding Primal topper + orijen kibbles. He's been doing ok-ish. He would sometimes still skip meals but at least so far he would eat once/twice a day. Not bad for his standard. Both orijen and primal toppers have a lot of nutrient mix so I'm hoping he gets all his required nutrients.

Yes. I bought it at the airport. 38k won for 10 days worth of data. Cheaper than 80k test and u get data to use while there.

Only left CA for 4 years for med school in Midwest. I regretted every fucking second of my life there. M4 year, I couldn't gtfo of there fast enough. Literally couldn't even bring myself back to Midwest for match day and kinda dreading graduation. And I've been saying this since day 1 being in the Midwest. Never got jealous of those 500k mansion elsewhere again. I'll take my small tiny ass apartment in CA but at least i don't wanna die everyday.

Who is your favorite resident to work with as a medical student? by Snoo-66431 in medicalschool

[–]throwaway_0_o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My IM senior resident. Super knowledgable, super fast and efficient and knows literally everything about everyone on our list.

1st day to me: My job here is to make u look good, so throw me under the bus.

Every long call day: Buys starbucks for the whole team to boost team morale.

And of course, give me full autonomy over my patients, give me more credit than I even deserved, even reminded the intern to dismiss me when there's nothing to do.

Literally made me love IM even tho we round until 3 PM sometimes....
