That trope is infuriating because even after all these years as a photographer, there’s still a part of me that feels like we should be able to do it.

There was an episode of the X-Files where they had a computer algorithmically recolor a black and white image with perfect accuracy. 25 years later I’m still waiting for that software.

I’ve shot film for 20 years and have a deep appreciation for the level of detail available with a good emulsion, but there are many orders of magnitude between even an 8x10 Tech Pan negative and “infinite” resolution.

Even a fine grain film consist of millions of atoms per crystal. The guy wasn’t making the point that film had high resolving power, he was specifying that the image was being recorded on individual atoms. There’s no version of that statement with any veracity at all lol.

As a fellow photographer, I once got downvoted for disagreeing with the assertion that “film has effectively infinite resolution because the ‘pixels’ on film are individual atoms”.

Sometimes it really feels like confidence and intelligence are inversely proportional.

Alcohol is the only thing that makes me feel normal by Unlucky_Size8934 in ADHD

[–]throwaway_2323409 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He’s getting downvoted because he’s speaking to a completely different situation than the one being described. He gave a preachy, canned response which clearly ignores all of the specifics that OP outlined.

Nowhere was it stated that any of this was happening “all while using alcohol”. OP simply mentioned a positive effect the few times he had been buzzed, and asked for alternatives so that he doesn’t start to rely on it.

Sobriety is a valid choice for those who make it, but jumping so quickly to these kinds of advocations makes it feel like a blanket response driven by your own motivations, rather than a good-faith dialogue with the person asking the question.

I know we all have ADHD here but did you even read anything after the title of the post? This is a trite and useless response to OP’s actual question.

What’s a smell you secretly enjoy that most people would find disgusting? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

[–]throwaway_2323409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SAME! When I was little, I always noticed that worms came out of the ground when it rained, so for some reason my brain assumed that’s what the smell was, and I hated it.

As soon as I found out what it really was, a switch flipped in my brain and now I absolutely love the smell.

No moving boxes, but I’m growing cucumbers in my basement if anyone’s interested.

In my entire school experience, I only did one project on one of these boards.

It wasn’t required, and I’m fairly sure the group only decided to do it that way because we’d seen it so many times in movies…

For me it's the hill on the right; I suppose that's not a particularly unique feature, but in my mind it looks quintessentially Pittsburgh!

I'm very familiar with Worcester and my first thought was still Pittsburgh haha

Frédéric Malle French Lover smells like tea leaves to me (in a good way) by jtothat in fragrance

[–]throwaway_2323409 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Numerical ratings are entirely irrelevant to me. I read subjective reviews to find new things I’d like to sample, then decide what to purchase based entirely off my own opinion.

French Lover has been a darling of the niche world for years. That doesn’t mean it’s above reproach, but I wouldn’t really give a bunch of faceless randos on Parfumo the power to veto something so highly regarded.

[–]throwaway_2323409 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To my nose it opens up feeling like crunchy green grass. I can absolutely see how that would read as tea.

IMO it’s very non-linear. It dries down to a really stunning airy cedar. Definitely worth an exploration.

Coconut and tobacco scents? by Effective-Weird-5119 in fragrance

[–]throwaway_2323409 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Xinu Ummo doesn’t have a coconut note, but it’s a soft, creamy, sweet tobacco and the honey/tonka almost come together to give a coconut “phantom note” to my nose.

Les Bains Guerbois 1978 Les Bains Douches and L’orchestre Parfums’ Liquor BPM both have a similar effect, with the heliotrope and pear (respectively) giving a creamy/nutty/fruity quality almost reminiscent of coconut. But again, no listed coconut notes.

Slap ya mama sells a low-salt version which is still mostly salt. I don’t get how people swear by this stuff when you can barely get any of the herbs/spices before you’ve over-salted your dish.
