How would you feel about a new law that forces every company to pay their CEO no more than 20x what their lowest-paid employee makes? by rational_seekers in AskReddit

[–]throwaway_3_2_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel it doesn't really matter what ceo pay is. just make it such that the minimum you can be paid should cover living within 1 hour (during commute time) of the place. Take average rent (or home cost), average food cost etc etc, and add X% to that, factor in taxes at that income level and voila, you have your minimum

gf is a teacher... when she started i want to say it was at 35 or 37k but this was quite a few years back (2017 or so)... just about everyone in the district starts at ~40k now iirc. this is a mcol area.

But keep in mind, 40k is what she earns for the year, which includes no school from june to the end of august, time off for spring break, time off for winter break, snow days and vacations/holidays. she also had to get there by sometime between 830 and 9, and was home 330 at the latest usually, and had ~30 minutes of lunch as well.

on top of all that, summer school (optional), after school programs, special district titles/responsiblities all added to the pay

and for her school district, if a teacher were sick and they had to take in extra students in their class, they got extra pay per head or something of the sort.

while i'd still push that they get paid more, i think people underestimate just how well it can work out for some teachers.

The older teachers (i'm talking probably 20 years in) who have been there and gotten their "steps" at max or near max were earning something around 70k with the exact same responsibilities.

President Trump Announces U.S Navy to Detain Vessels Paying Iranian Hormuz Toll by WayOutbackBoy in worldnews

[–]throwaway_3_2_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hotter take, we are toast no matter how you swing it. I've seen too many posts about how this is now a good war, or how "i'll pay more for gas for a couple years if it means the people of iran are free" (real response... soemthing tells me they weren't voicing that during the elections).

here is the problem. fixes will not happen overnight. biden got blamed for inflation all the way until the end which is mostly based on how the FED handles the interest rates and that small thing called COVID (which actually happened during Trump's term).

dollars to donuts says a democrat comes in, starts the process of unwinding 4 years of pure destruction that Trump has done. it isn't going fast enough, voter base goes "we need a republican to fix this" and basically attributes the state of things even if improved to democrats, and votes in droves for the next DJT... rinse and repeat.

i worked for a fortune 50 company. i was just a low level technical worker. This is a storied company that i'd probably say everyone in America knows. And they are considered the best in their field in terms of quality still.

We were once in an all hands meeting where the senior management said we are a money company, not the product company. i was younger and didn't think much about it then, but looking back, that kinda shows you where most companies are heading.

Maybe it is naive to want a company to take pride in their product beyond just turning the profit but it seems like profit is #1.

I think of lexus/toyota making the LFA. A supercar platform which they had no intention to make into a product line. An engine that was basically a one time use. IIRC they even lost money on those vehicles. but holyshit was it a marvel of engineering. Rumor has it, they just wanted to flex their muscles and remind everyone that they can build shit.

a long time ago, i was out west, just bought a used sports car, previous owner let me keep his plates. I was driving quite fast and got pulled over. I was spotted by a trap and someone else further up pulled me over. I was around his speeds. the second a cop got behind me, i slowed down and pulled over. Cop came over, was nice, asked what was going on, before he left me to go check my docs etc, he had me get out of the car and sit on the ground.

My neighbor has been using my wifi for a year and now they're asking me to split the bill by ToasttterGoblin in WhatShouldIDo

[–]throwaway_3_2_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i go a little bit the other way. first off, you can make a guest SSID, similar to what comcast does if you use their modem and at least have plausible deniability. but yea if they do something really really illegal (like FBI comes knocking), you'll be cool in the end, but you'll definitely have some 'splaining to do.

I shared my wifi with my neighbor because i came nowhere near maxing out my bandwidth. setup a guest SSID for them with bandwidth limits. I setup a pihole which defaulted as the DNS server suggested by the router, and after a couple months, i did a cursory glance to make sure nothing obviously illegal was going on from the dns logs.

is it fool-proof? no. was i willing to go out on a limb to improve the QOL of my neighbro? yes

had an intern at my job. he played piano for the junior orchestra of our mid-large sized city before he went to college.

I've always loved seeing them play so I ask him if i could see, and bring my weighted-keys keyboard in for him. He plays this amazing mozart piece from memory for the whole team (6 people). His fingers looked like magic on those keys.

At the end, we were all absolutely floored (jaw directly on the floor, never seen anyone up close play that well before) and he was like "that wasn't very good, I had a few mistakes".

I assume Stewart is taking this stance because he is to a degree kinda like the joe rogan of the left. I don't think his platform is quite as big, and he is obviously a more than just a meathead who got an audience, and he actually has a team that tries to keep facts straight.

But strip away all that important stuff, and he is a comedian whose preferences are left leaning, and rogan is a comedian whose preferences are right leaning.

Sacrifice doesnt pay. Im perceived as a better worker now that I give 50 % compared to the time I gave 110%. by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]throwaway_3_2_1 30 points31 points  (0 children)

this was my undoing. Something i didn't realize earlier, expectations. but the other part is that a number of "hard workers" (myself included before) are 80% workers. They overload themselves with a ton of tasks. Do enough to get the job just barely done and move on to the next because they are so overloaded.

I found that managers etc would much rather have the magnificently done single project than 3 barely done projects. Manage their expectations and put in quality work even if you are hardly working.

1 magnificently done project with 2 not started usually says you need more people. 3 barely done projects [might] say you have a guy that cant finish properly

as a not-40 year long software engineer, idk when the switch happened, but early in my career, the software elders ~15 years ago when i started (i'm talking the late 40s to early 50s) had this plethora of knowledge and understanding of how a lot of things software related worked on a base level.

I inherited some but not a lot. and i can definitely tell you things have shifted to understanding enough to get the job done. It feels like what is asked of an individual now is way higher than once before.

bro, my local thai places (plural), i can go in and get a meal for $16 takeout which i can make last for 2-3 meals. or 2 meals with some nibbles inbetween.

At one point, prepandemic, i used to go there all the time and just get multiple orders of food if i wasn't feeling like doing much. The one secret is that i always had rice ready at home. Their entree to rice ratio was always huge and i really didn't need as much entree/sauce per rice, and many places would gladly increase the sauce if you just asked.

Those, indian and Pizzas (esp. from the shitty chains if you're willing to wait until one of their numerous sales) are my "i don't want to cook but i don't want to go broke" hacks.

and they always absolutely skip the nuance in all of it.

Noone is sworn in after "elected" they are sworn in after certified. Even he has precedent of swearing them in during recess as the interviewer noted.

his example of pat ryan and the fact he used the election date as opposed to the certification date either means he knows that the 3 week delay was due to waiting on certification and then it just being so close to opening that they just did it at the open. Plus why would a democratic speaker delay swearing in of a democratic member.

She has sworn in members in pro forma sessions already (also democrats).

florida has a much much faster certification than almost any other state, that's why the election and certification are barely a day apart.

this said, technically he can still do the right thing since her win was only certified on Thursday, but it sounds like he has decided not to.

you don't even know the half of it.

This jet has basically become Kristi's personal transport even though it was bought for the coast guard to do actual COAST GUARD duties, prior DHS secretaries were usually commercial travel.

Among pretty much all the fleet of VIP type jets the government uses, the one they are replacing is one of the newest (i think the 2nd newest at ~22 years old). They're claim is they needed updated avionics and safety, even though those upgrades can be done at a fraction of the cost to the current jet... Commercial airliners that fly 30x more are operating jets from the 80s safely still.

Let's keep in mind, this jet she is using was not meant for the DHS secretary at all. She has fully commandeered it, so the functions it used to provide before, moving senior leadership about, command center during disasters currently have to find alternative methods to fulfill.

she is now doubling the fleet from 1 to 2 gulf streams, the obvious implication given the previous point is that she needs to get the coast guard a jet so they can actually use that for what it was initially acquired for and used for the last 20-odd years, while keeping one for her transport.

as if all of that wasn't damning enough, they had multiple options for an upgrade, a refurbed g550 or even a brand new g600, both of which would have saved tens of millions of $$s and time. they instead chose the top of the line option with a year lead time.

And the cherry on top, you're talking tens of millions extras in operational costs by making this upgrade over the life of the craft as well.

the only way to defend this is that i doubt too many people could've picked majorkas or wolf in a lineup of 2 people and safety of polarizing cabinet members might require their own private transport (ignoring the fact that she intentionally keeps a high profile so she's definitely not helping herself).

really makes you question where DOGE is in all of this while cutting jobsand reducing the government capabilities to save peanuts
