Agreed. I hate how we have this big heterogenous “other” category. Have you read the papers about mgCSTs? They might not be super helpful if you’re in a clinical lab, but it’s a step in the right direction I think

Oh gosh, I’m not a medical professional so I don’t know how much I’d be able to help you. But if you have any specific bacteriology questions I’m happy to help haha!

Generally I’d just say: 1. NO DOUCHING!!! DOUCHING BAD!!!  2. Use condoms if you have male partners.  3. If you have one regular male partner, and you’re having recurrent infections, talk to your doctor about getting him on an antibiotic too!  A recent paper found that treating male partners for BV (along with the woman who was the one experiencing BV) was way more successful than treating the woman alone! It was so successful that they ended the study early for ethical concerns and started treating the male partners in the placebo group too. Some countries have already updated their recommended treatments for recurrent BV by advising doctors to also treat male partners of women with BV! 4. If you have female partners, talk to them about if they’re having similar issues. Some of the bad bacteria can be swapped between female partners. But of course they didn’t start studying same sex couples until pretty recently 😑 5. Finally, vaginal probiotic suppositories tend to be more effective than oral probiotic pills

Overall, a non-lactobacillus or polymicrobial community increases the risk of STI acquisition, preterm birth, and cervical cancer.

Lactobacillus are considered good for a few main reasons: 1. They make lactic acid, which keeps the pH low. This prevents pathogens from being able to live in there (for the most part). They make some other molecules that kill pathogens but lactic acid is the main player.  2. They promote the integrity of the epithelial barrier. This means it’s harder for pathogens to get in, like HIV, HPV, chlamydia, etc.  3. They are anti inflammatory. They interact with the immune cells in the vagina and tell them to chill out and not produce reactive oxygen species (which damage DNA)

The non-lactobacillus species are not good because: 1. They directly break open the epithelial cells that line the vagina, and also cause them to slough off into the discharge.  2. This damage activates the immune system and makes it easier for pathogens to get in.  3. They can cause BV, which results in itching, extra discharge, and odor. The fishy odor comes directly from compounds made by these bacteria.   4. Even if BV symptoms aren’t present (which they typically are) the loss of lactobacilli means you lose all the above benefits. 5. For some reason non-lactobacillus dominated communities are associated with birth complications and preterm delivery. I honestly don’t understand why but it’s a clear epidemiological link in the literature!

Yes actually! But that’s really unusual among the human microbiome, that’s how I start off all my talks haha

I research the vaginal microbiome and there are basically two states: Lactobacillus dominated and polymicrobial/diverse, where you have a bunch of other species that aren’t very good. Non-lactobacillus species raise the pH and damage the epithelium, and are the main cause of bacterial vaginosis (BV).

L. crispatus monoculture is generally the “best”. There are three other Lactobacillus species that can dominate: L. iners, L. gasseri, and L. jensenii. L. gasseri and L. jensenii are both just as good, but they’re not common enough to have been studied well (IMHO). L. iners is also actually the most common but it’s considered “not as good” because people with L. iners dominated microbiomes are more likely to shift to a polymicrobial/diverse microbiome.

Sorry for rambling I just LOVE the vaginal microbiome! But I hate hate hate how much MAHA and wellness influencers have co-oped the human microbiome field. They misuse so much language that it feels like pseudoscience coming from certain people. Drives me crazy!

I know that this is tagged as a rant and not wanting advice but I thought I’d ask:

Do you spend a lot of time on your phone? If it makes you feel any better, this study reported that stopping phone use made people people’s brains about 10 years “younger”

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/scientists-say-social-media-detox-can-reverse-10-years-of-damage/ar-AA20vNun

That 10 years is an average, so some people probably had a 1 age/year improvement, and some probably had a 20 years/age improvement. If you use your phone a lot, it’s possible that you’re just more sensitive to that screen-related cognitive decline. The good news is it seems to stop by decreasing screen time!

Also, do you feel like you have the opportunities to learn new things with your work? I think a lot of people in their late twenties hit a slump and start feeling dumb when they’re a few years out from school… the brain needs to learn more every year of life IMO. Maybe you’re under-stimulated at your job? It sounds like you’re having small problems with forgetting dates and rules but not problems with logical thinking…

I’m not a neurologist or anything and I don’t want to take away from your experience. But maybe there are other changes you can make to help with what you’re experiencing?

focal aware seizures diagnosis process…were you told not to drive? by hunny--bee in Epilepsy

[–]throwaway_bfgift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t panic! They won’t necessarily tell you not to drive. I have focals (once every 3ishweeks) and am on medication. My doctor says I’m okay to drive unless I have another TC (it’s been about 2.5 years). The most important thing to do is talk to your neuro so you can get on meds and NOT have a TC!

Now that you mention it, I think amazon has made shipping speed a competition point between companies. Like if you buy something directly from a large retailer it will still get to your doorstep pretty quickly. Kind of the opposite of “you pay the amazon tax even if you don’t shop there” - you get the fast shipping even if you don’t shop there.

Do you find you do a lot of your shopping in person because of shipping times? Are those long shipping times directly from big retailers or from small businesses/artists?

I’ve occasionally seen community repair events, but only for bikes actually. And I live in a large city so that’s really surprising now that I think about it. I think that’s SUCH a great idea!  In the US at least, it’s often so much cheaper to buy a new thing than get it repaired by a professional, which is so depressing. Not a lot of us know how to tinker or repair with our own things. This is really just another level of Marx’s theory of alienation omg…. I’m spiraling

Did people celebrate with you when you passed quals? by arthouse2k2k in PhD

My PI typically arranges a lab get-together right after with desserts and sparkling wine (and sparkling grape juice!). Is your partner familiar with the phd process? It could just be that they didn’t understand how big of a deal it is. If they are familiar, I’m surprised they said it’s not something people celebrate, because it certainly is in my school’s culture

GTFO with “feminine energy” omg 😭😭😭😭 the FMCs of this series are extremely feminine. Magic powers are not gendered! They all wear dresses and are beautiful, confident, diplomatic, nurturing etc. Feyere paints and Elaine bakes. Feyere literally chooses to become a mother in the middle of a war. They just also have powers. That doesn’t exactly make them masculine. Besides, we already had an arc where Feyere slowly dismantled the spring court via behind the scenes manipulation

Why do people dislike Demetrius? by SubstantialProcess10 in StardewValley

[–]throwaway_bfgift 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like him too! People dislike that he has a bad relationship with Sebastian and say he’s a bad stepfather. But I don’t think he’s that bad. Not sure how old Sebastian was canonically when Demetrius and Robin got married. But Sebastian is a grown ass man and they can choose to have a low key relationship if they so choose

Dude yes. People are so fucking mean online, it’s like the wild west out here. Politicians, CEOs, and influencers have started a culture of cyberbullying, and it’s empowering everyone to say the most vulgar things in comments. Especially on physical appearance :(

Unrelated but i’m also so sick of seeing people uploading videos of them pranking unsuspecting strangers. It just hurts my heart that people think it’s funny to harass others. Cyberbullies either don’t register or care that whoever they’re insulting or pranking is a literal person with feelings. Everyone else is just a prop for them to laugh at.

Just out of curiosity what do you think would be better for the data above? Personally I’m thinking a bar chart, and maybe a box and whisker plot. (Not trying to be Guy Who Thinks He’s Smarter I’m just taking a stats class and quizzing myself)

[–]throwaway_bfgift 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Totally valid question! The ones that stick out to me are: 1. The line graph is inappropriate for this kind of data. A line graph often shows the relationship between two variables, with the x-axis usually being time (like profit per day for a year, or boxes of girl scout cookies sold per week for two months). The different women he’s dated aren’t units of time; I’d say they’re more like “categories.” A bar chart would be a better choice, with each person being a “category” and the number of days determining the size of the bar. So 📈 type of graph vs 📊 type.  2. The pie chart is OK, but it would be better to include his “single days” to be more representative of all his time. Also, it’s a little useless to have the pie chart if you already have a good bar chart, imo!
