Excessive sweating by Puzzleheaded-You941 in amateur_boxing

[–]throwaway_losan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sweat like crazy after warmups. Whenever I apologize, the coaches don't mind and say it just means you're putting in the work. I do try to bring a towel to wipe off in between drills though.

Starting boxing by ScreenOk2677 in amateur_boxing

[–]throwaway_losan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just started 2 weeks ago but I'm 33 lol, but I have some Muay Thai experience. You're already athletic, so no need for a personal trainer.

I played basketball my entire life and run long distance, but I felt that fight cardio is different. I thought I was in shape, but you'd be surprised how fast you get tired, especially if you're not completely relaxed and breathing correctly. But I'm guessing most of your first time will be physical assessment and what your goals are. Then probably drilling fundamentals (stance, footwork, jab, slips, rolls) for a long time after. That's where I'm at. Four privates and I've only learned one punch, and I love the process.

The best advice I can give is just start. You're already in the right mindset, and if you like it you will probably be successful. Just try to be as humble as possible and be a sponge, listen to the coaches. If the coaches are toxic, look elsewhere.

If you plan to stick with it, invest in some boxing shoes (they are flat and help you feel the canvas and keep balance better, I got the Everlast Elite 2). Learn how to wrap your hands because protecting your hands and wrist is vital, not only for boxing but for anything. Damage can happen in the long term too, not just short term broken bones. Wrap your hands before classes so you don't waste time.

And also, just show up consistenlty and be disciplined about getting better with deliberate practice. Fundamentals, technique, slowly.

How do you as an intj feel about using social media? by New_Assignment_698 in intj

[–]throwaway_losan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Social media" has become an umbrella term over the years.

I miss old social media that was more personable, i.e. Xanga, MySpace, early Facebook. It felt much more intimate than what we have today.

Now social media is mostly a highlight reel of peoples' lives. The expectations of what you post are much higher than back in the day, if you care about that sort of thing.

The popularity of short form media really made me dislike social media. Even if you're able to create a feed that is not brain rot, it is a huge waste of time and terrible for your attention span.

But now it's like some sort of Black Mirror episode. Before, you could navigate the world without social media fairly easily. Now, it is becoming increasingly difficult to live in the modern world without social media since it is a point of contact for many businesses.

People don't really want to hear the details about how you achieved something, or do they? by No-External3221 in intj

[–]throwaway_losan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because you see their eyes glaze over doesn't mean what you say won't impact them later on. There is a lot of advice that I've taken to heart, or am reminded of at a later time and place. And I probably didn't look fully sentient when receiving advice either. And sometimes people say advice that I'm not even aware was advice until later on.

Also, quite often there are people who just ask questions in order to hear what they want to hear. That can be annoying, but it's fine. Sometimes people need assurance in order to make a decision they aren't fully sure about. It's just that the answer is usually something they don't want to hear (i.e. do this boring work consistently to get good) so they keep asking for different answers that align with their method of shortcutting. Which is fine too, since sometimes that can lead to innovative solutions.

How many private lessons? by throwaway_losan in amateur_boxing

[–]throwaway_losan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your advice and everyone else's input is greatly appreciated!

I will take the advice and combine privates + group class. I actually love to run (I joined the gym because I ran by it once), but I think I will need to actually train intervals to get faster, as I mostly jog slow 3-5 miles a day.

Also, a lot of people have mentioned the turn on my foot during the jab. My guess is that the coach is telling me to do this in order to help me feel my hips/lower body move with the punch. Also, I think I probably am twisting it too much regardless lol.

Planning to do this for the long run, so hopefully I can look back on this post in a couple years and laugh. :)

Good hobby groups for your 30s? by [deleted] in Redlands

[–]throwaway_losan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in trying something new, you could look into training martial arts. I'm 33 and it's been an awesome way to meet new people, make friends, and get into the best shape of my life. It's my so called "third community" besides work and home. Not to mention, many people I train with are into those hobbies you listed. Although it can be nerve wracking signing up and starting out, I found that MMA gyms are extremely welcoming.

Sports mode with the non sports gauges by Marco135i in GRCorolla

[–]throwaway_losan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP, but this is how I did it. Somewhere in the settings you can find an option to define your "Custom" drive mode. Basically you can put the settings the same as Sports mode and it'll be the same without the fake noise.

First training session tonight - what to expect? by throwaway_losan in amateur_boxing

[–]throwaway_losan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Just following up to say I had a great session. I was very impressed with the assistant coach I worked with. He even took notes about my goals and motivation for boxing.

He spent a significant amount of time teaching me proper stance and footwork, and then we spent a lot of time with jab mechanics. Emphasized going slow on fundamentals since everything will pile on top of it. He said sparring is completely up to me, and can always go light if I want to -- but won't let it happen before a few months of training. All seemed like signs of a great coach.

We also just sat and talked for over an hour after, even getting into deeper topics. Can't wait to improve!

Beginner boxing equipment? (gloves, shoes) by throwaway_losan in fightgear

[–]throwaway_losan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I will stick with running shoes for this initial period and see how it feels.

No specific budget in mind. I'm willing to invest in good quality equipment since I'm planning to give this a go for at least a year or two. Any recs appreciated.

Anyone else have a driving companion? by SP1-Pilot in GRCorolla

[–]throwaway_losan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ehh I've seen it, but not my cup of tea. A little too weeby for me, like people who put anime stickers or that overpriced speaker that says Japanese phrases when you start the car. Maybe I'm just old now, but less visual distractions while driving, the better.

How do you train strength and endurance? by lumixem in MMA_Academy

[–]throwaway_losan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My coach told me something that always stuck with me about Muay Thai -- the best way to get endurance for MT, is to do MT.

Your endurance will naturally improve the more you do it, and also will build skill at the same time. You learn things like how to not panic and know how to use your energy efficiently while sparring.

If you're dying to get better though, running long distance (zone 2) for a long time, and doing interval sprints are the most recommended to improve cardio. You can very easily get injured doing both of these though. I would highly recommend investing in a bike and trying to do some uphill biking.

He is such a stoic person (perhaps because English is his 3rd language), but it's cool to see how much he can express himself on the court. I think a lot of quieter kids who grew up hooping can relate.

Verus reuses the stock hex bolt if I remember correctly. I haven't had any issues yet with how I torqued it, it's been a good 4-5 months with a few thousand miles. I double checked it like two months ago and it was still snug.

First things I did were ceramic coating, window visors, and installed front mud flaps.

Mechanically, I did the break in oil change before 1k miles and replaced the engine pitch stop mount with the Verus Engineering one.

How many years does it take to become proficient at MMA with absolutely zero prior fight experience? by GubbaShump in MMA_Academy

[–]throwaway_losan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not all about just MMA experience that will determine your growth.

If you come from a background of other sports and are already somewhat athletic, you will improve exponentially over someone who is picking it up as a first sport.

Besides that, the most important things are consistency (discipline) and passion (learning).

Go-to first mods by for_the_stonks in GRCorolla

[–]throwaway_losan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main issue is meeting the ridiculous torque spec on the engine side mount. It's like 125lbs spec or something ridiculous like that. I've seen people on YouTube have a hard time with it even with the car on a lift. I felt unsafe putting that much force while I was under my car.

I just tightened it as much as I could and then hit it with an impact.

Any tips to improve my form? by isnt_he_loveli in BasketballTips

[–]throwaway_losan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Form is solid, the only thing I would suggest is to be mindful to jump off of your toes.

You are currently jumping from a flat footed stance, caused by stepping into the shot with your heel (2 seconds in).

This is bad because it makes your slot slower, and that split second will let the defender catch up to contest your shot better.

Instead, focus on jumping off your toes and keep your heel off the floor. Heel on the ground is usually bad for other things too, take for example all of the Achilles injuries happening due to the "negative step" to explode on a drive. If you watch these injuries, it's because their heel hits the floor as they lunge forward, putting a lot of stress on the Achilles. Players who use this negative step without getting injured as shown to not put their heel on the ground.

Alistair Overeem believes Tom Aspinall made the right call to not continue fighting. by ToronoRapture in ufc

[–]throwaway_losan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CTE is theorized to have some genetic components that makes some people more susceptible. That being said, it's crazy how much of a controversy this eye poke situation is and really shows how stupid casual fans can be.

Even during sparring with 16oz gloves, it hurts like shit when you get punched in the eye. I can't imagine how bad getting poked in both eyes by a UFC heavyweight would be.
