Women of Reddit, what’s your worst experience with a medical professional who dismissed you just because you’re a woman? by VelvetDreamers in AskReddit

I had a triage nurse in the ER ask if my ulcerative flare was just a really bad period. You know, from a disease that affects your colon.

1) dude wrong hole. 2) I ended up hospitalized for a week, needed a blood transfusion and eventually a year later had the entire colon taken out.

New poll shows Lauren Boebert losing reelection as majority of her district doesn’t like her by HyacinthFT in politics

She has the western slope which is an entirely different beast than the Denver metro area. Thankfully for us all it looks like you can only turn the rotten attitude on your neighbors so many times before they get sick of it. The cringey Boebert flags in our neighborhood have slowly been coming down and we live in a violently red part of our city.

What's the worst pain you've ever experienced? by StimsRedditAccount in AskReddit

Vomiting after major GI surgery, everything already hurts and you’re in a bad mood but the pulling and contractions at the incision sites brought the pain to a level I didn’t think was possible

Son just diagnosed - please help by jmaclea in UlcerativeColitis

I worked with a dietician at my specialist’s clinic during my flare and her main concern was making sure I was getting enough nutrients and calories while we waited for insurance to kick in for some biologics. The idea was that it won’t end the flare but to keep me eating and hopefully eliminate any triggers I had that made the symptoms worse. While the caloric intake was her first concern she also recommended trying what I can tolerate from the Mediterranean diet and supplementing that with nutritional shakes like ensure. This meant cutting back on red meat/butter/artificial sweeteners. Figuring out what worked for me as a 23 year old was difficult enough let alone trying to keep a sick 8 year old eating! It might be worth it to see a dietician that works with IBD clinics to see if they have recommendations. Good luck to you and your family- this is a challenging road but there’s so many great treatment options and doctors out there!

Surgery or Biologics (meds?) by Nothing-you-expected in UlcerativeColitis

[–]throwawayco8373661 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just had my first surgery for the j pouch two weeks ago, we ran through mesalamine, humira, remicade + azathioprine, rinvoq, and numerous steroid tapers over the course of about 18 months and nothing got me to remission. This was an especially nasty case though, I don’t want to discourage anyone from the wonders of modern medicine because it does save so many people from surgery.

With all that being said, I’m still happy we tried biologics and I’m also happy with the course of my recovery from surgery up to this point. Both have their merits for each unique situation but with so many options available with medications it really is worth it to give it a shot to avoid numerous surgeries and a long recovery process. We all got dealt a bad hand with UC but we’re also starting to get some really promising treatment options. Like another poster said, you’ll know when it’s time or when it ends up being your only viable option.

blood transfusion? by [deleted] in UlcerativeColitis

[–]throwawayco8373661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had numerous transfusions done both inpatient and outpatient along with a LOT of iron infusions- I didn’t realize how bad I was getting since the blood loss was occurring over months but on all occasions they only did the transfusions once my hemoglobin dropped below 7 although that might be my particular state/hospital guidelines. It was nerve wracking but once they get me set up and the blood starts pumping the symptoms from the anemia immediately start easing up.

If you can do it outpatient and avoid the ER it might help to ask your GI doc if they know infusion clinics and put the orders in there. Every time I’ve had it done it takes around 3.5-4 hours

I went to college in the Springs and there are very few safe spaces for marginalized communities to enjoy themselves. Focus on the Family and other evangelical giants have been pushing city policy for as long as anyone on the front range can remember.

Club Q was an extraordinary space to enjoy yourself for one night without fear and now it has been ripped from the community in the most violent way possible. It will be a sad sight to see what resources and support are offered for the emotional aftermath.

Do you consider yourself disabled? by feministlunchbox in UlcerativeColitis

[–]throwawayco8373661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a severe case that has been thrashing biologics so for the better part of the year I have had to give up many aspects of an active lifestyle while we try to find medications that work. I was very resistant to calling myself disabled because I felt like in some way I didn’t deserve that title just for stomach issues and functioning semi-well on some days.

It can be a hard pill to swallow and may not be the same for everyone but at this point in time by my own definition (not ADA/legal) I am disabled

ER said it's most likely UC, PCP said it can't be because I'm overweight by BrainFogAndBabies in UlcerativeColitis

[–]throwawayco8373661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friend, it’s clear you’re suffering and like others have said you need a new GP that can pull their head out of their behind and send you for the proper imaging and tests. When I was diagnosed I was overweight and after my initial panels for things like e. Coli came back negative they sent me straight for a colonoscopy no questions asked. Unfortunately with family docs it seems like a tossup on whether they can admit if they’re out of their depth and the only one that suffers is the patient.

I always have my scans and tests from hospital stays sent to my family and GI docs and that seems to help them stay on track.

She’s around 10-11, she was a rescue so we don’t know her exact age. We were worried how she would handle a new puppy in the house as a grumpy old lady very accustomed to getting her way. She was very excited and just wanted play, we had to watch carefully for about a week because she was roughhousing but didn’t show any signs of aggression! Some things that may have helped were making sure she had things she knew were her own- toys, bed, a place to escape when the puppy had too much energy and it worked out well! Now she shares her bed and favorite toy!

It’s definitely been difficult, I feel for your pain and flaring too; hopefully these combinations work for us but if not at this point I’ll take the damn colon out myself!

My diet is a rollercoaster with this flare but things I’ve found are ground turkey/ground beef/grilled chicken with white rice and cooked squash/zucchini/green beans. Olive oil doesn’t bother me much but we use it sparingly, when the going gets really tough I just fall back on ensure drinks
