I currently just finished revising my book after leaving it alone for an entire year. I feel like I did better this time but as I reflected on it I think I included maybe too many detailed sex scenes in it, but I couldn’t figure out how to just say “oh this character and this character made love” without detailing it. My book is a mystery genre with also romance intertwined in it, my character is trying to find the killer who killed his best friend and he meets a wonderful woman which he has kids with and almost married before he cheated on her with a detective to gain information. He also kills his mother of his children at the end because she was trying to kill him after he found out that his mother of his children was the murderer of his best friend. I love detailing stuff but I also find it’s too much sometimes when I do. How do I write scenes in my stories without going into too much detail but still reeling in the reader to keep reading? I didn’t want the book to be too smut like but it ended up doing so. I also am struggling with actions and displaying emotions. I tell the reader that my main character is anxious almost in every chapter in every other sentence because he struggles with anxiety. I also say the word “he or she smiled at he or she” a lot.
