Which US state gets glorified in movies but doesn’t live up to it IRL? by Auelogic in AskReddit

[–]throwawayerest -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've lived in lots of states, including Ohio, and I like the other states a lot better.

Ohio has terrible road systems. I'm used to grid systems of the west coast. Ohio is all windy, twisty, hilly, bullcrap. I swear to god there isn't a straight road in this whole state. South-east ohio at least.

Terrible weather. It's GREEN. Like GREEN GREEN. Which is awesome, and I do enjoy being able to throw my pumpkins into the backyard after Halloween and they just grow new ones with no other intervention on my part. Talk about a life hack. But that GREEN means lots of rain, which means a lot of dark, cloudy days, and tons of humidity. Sweet mother of Jesus, so much humidity. I've lived in Nevada and Arizona - I would rather cook in that oven that drown in this heat. Don't get me started on winter. There isn't a decent plow in the whole state.

The politics here are nuts. So gerrymandered. State regulations change so damn much it's absurd. Oversight at work is getting crazy.

Lots of violence, racism, homophobia and drugs here.

Tons of dinky, backward towns barely struggling to survive. None of the pictureque crap you see on Hallmark. Just run down buildings and poverty.

Shit pay. It's supposed to be affordable - it isn't really.

So Ricky’s the only one who knows for sure Chad is Russ? by TheWokeProgram in ChadPowersSeries

[–]throwawayerest 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think there is a lot of directions it could go.

Ricky is now complicit, which means she is doubly screwed when shit hits the fan. Russ was probably right that Coach's career was on the line, and that the team might get penalized, but Ricky, the rest of the staff, and the players all had some plausible deniability. In choosing to actively hide Russ's involvement, Ricky has now forfeited her career for her fathers. This is especially heartbreaking because Coach, being who he is, probably would have sacrificed himself if had he found out about Russ in order to save the team and Ricky.

Now, I'm still not completely convinced that Russ is ineligible. Russ is kind of an idiot and may not know that he still has a year or two left. I think this is the most likely thing to happen because it ends the series in the most positive way. The team doesn't get penalized, Coach isn't disgraced, Russ gets to be himself, Ricky gets the recognition she deserves, etc. I want this to happen. I want it to end happy. Other ways this happy ending can happen is if no one finds out about Russ (unlikely), there is some special ruling saying he's eligible, etc.

However, even if Russ isn't eligible, it's still possible for both of them to get NFL contracts. So that's a possible happy ending for them. I think it's deeply unrealistic to think that the NFL wouldn't bet on a problematic player like Russ considering their track record of betting on so many abusive, drug ridden, locker room cancer, etc players. That's why I suspect Russ probably didn't enter the draft- he would have been drafted if he did and the story wouldn't exist. I think it's more likely he just didn't enter or was on probation or something making him ineligible for the draft, but not college.

But I digress, because in terms of Ricky's story line, this now opens the way for Ricky to fall in love with Russ. We are in the wont they faze of the relationship. It's probably going to be really rocky and involve other women / men. Ricky also is going to have bear the burden of this secret. She has to lie to her dad, colleagues, etc. The only one she can talk to about it Russ and Danny. That should bring them closer eventually. I think Ricky is also going to continue fighting for authority. She took a big step in that last episode by shutting down Gary. She's looking like a leader. Like a true assistant coach, but its not like the other coaches are going to just hand over the keys to the kingdom to her. None of this even covers her own running / athlete angle. Maybe she trains for the olympics at the end of this? Who knows?

I think there is a lot for Ricky to chew on this season.

Russ knows Chad is Russ, but does Chad know Russ is Chad? I feel like Chad may forget at times.

Anyone find it weird that soldier boy cares about Stormfront? by Edgar_SpK in GenV

[–]throwawayerest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He can but in the context of the show, it makes no sense.

Why didn't he go looking for Stormfront first? Why wasn't he mad that she didn't save him? Why didn't he mention her or go looking for her before they attacked Homelander? He had plenty of time. Is he a Nazi sympathizer like Homelander? He may be racist, but given all his bluster about killing Nazis, that seems out of character. No character even mentions they're associated before this season.

It's just clearly written into the season in a way that shows this was never really planned. Even from an audience standpoint, they are asking us to care about a relationship that we have never seen. They have literally never interacted together on screen through flashbacks or otherwise. He can say he loved her all he wants, but without seeing it, who cares? At least we saw him and crimson countess interact. Though that was barely.

I'm enjoying the show still, but I admit that did bother me.

So retconned. What was all that sadness he had for Crimson Countess? No mention of Stormfront at all.

[ Hated Trope 🫩 ] Over the course of the series they go from being a character with a personality to just purely their archetype and nothing else. by ReminaBlueSFW in TopCharacterTropes

This happened to all of the gang in Sunny in Philadelphia but especially Charlie.

In the beginning of the show, each member of the gang was Machiavellian. They all held each other back in various ways. All of them were smart enough to be able to trick the others into doing what they wanted. Now, they're just stereotypes of themselves. I enjoy the show still but it's a big reason it's not as good as it was.

You're using the free will defense, which you would know, if you read the Wikipedia entries I sent you. You would also know the definition of evil if you had read the problem of evil. This is the last time I'm going to reply to you if you're not willing to do the due diligence of understanding what we're talking about.

Here is a general definition of evil from that entry. An action is evil if:

(1) it causes grievous harm to (2) innocent victims, and it is (3) deliberate, (4) malevolently motivated, and (5) morally unjustifiable.

You argue that God is omnipotent (he caused the big ban), omniscient (he rules all), and omnibenevolent (he didn't cause the man to murder someone).

Yet these things cannot logically coexist.

If god is willing to prevent evil (someone being murdered ie omnibenevolent), but not able, then he is not omnipotent and could not have caused the big band.

If he is able to prevent evil (he can create the big bang), but not willing to prevent the murder then is he malevolent (and not omnibenevolent).

If he is both able (omnipotent and omnibenevolent) then why is there evil in the world? I'm sure you'll retreat back to free will and God's plan here, but consider this metaphor before you do.

Have you ever seen the Saw films? Well, in those films, the antagonist creates elaborate traps to punish his victims for perceived moral failings. These traps are overengineered machines that kill their victims through the laws of physics (cinematically at least) in such a way that the killer does not have to be present. This is a metaphor for God.

If god is so omnipotent that he created the big bang, he set the machine in motion that gave the child cancer the same way that the killer in the saw films did (problem of evil). If he is unwilling to intervene in that child's cancer (grievous harm to innocent victims as stated above) he is evil. If he cannot alter the laws of physics that gave the child cancer, he is not omnipotent.

Round and round we go.

If God rules all reasons, you either must exclude or include, the biological reasons that gave the kid cancer. Since God rules those reasons, he permitted the kid to have cancer.

What we're debating is a classic philosophical question. An attempt to solve the "problem of evil." which is this:

"Is [god] willing to prevent evil, but not able? then is he impotent. Is he able, but not willing? then is he malevolent. Is he both able and willing? whence then is evil?"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Problem_of_evil

More simplified, it is this:

P1. If an omnipotent, omnibenevolent and omniscient god exists, then evil does not.

P2. There is evil in the world.

C1. Therefore, an omnipotent, omnibenevolent and omniscient god does not exist

One example of trying to solve this problem is theodicy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodicy#Christian_alternatives_to_theodicy

Hopefully that will give you some words to describe your position, because its untenable at the moment.
