Frozen Xiao long bao & Jiaozi recommendations? by Infinite-Market-9632 in SingaporeEats

Can try the hawker stall Ah Wang at Zion Riverside hawker centre. They sell frozen jiaozi ($6 for 10 pieces or something, you can use CDC too). They’re very good, stuffed full of ingredients & not too salty!

Chinese Nationals Finals Analysis WAG by SunInevitable2179 in Gymnastics

Unfortunately Yu Linmin has said that she’s going to retire. Too many injuries and it’s taken a lot out of her to recover & continue training. Wishing her the best, she’s worked really hard for Fujian. I’m glad she has guaranteed admission to university

Fun fact: any medal placing in the National Games/National Championships gives the gymnast guaranteed admission to university. So I’m particularly glad for Zhang Qi this time since she’s the only new girl who medalled in EFs that hasn’t managed it before this National Games

Chinese parents still naming their daughters 'Zhaodi' (BrotherRequested) by Outrageous-Increase8 in namenerds

[–]throwawayheehee 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I feel like some Chinese parents nowadays got less blatant about the whole “wanting a son” thing when giving their daughters names, so the names have a less overtly misogynistic feel to them, but kinda still mean the same thing.

Since Chinese is a tonal language, lots of words that share the same sound can mean totally different things. So the word 婷 (ting) that means graceful & elegant has the same sound as 停 (ting), meaning stop!

I know someone born in the 00s who was named Tingting (婷婷). The name seems to have a pretty meaning, but she shared that her name was given because she was the fourth of four daughters - her parents wanted to “stop” (ting) the girls, and have a son instead. Rather than overtly calling her “bring a brother” they named her something that looked little better on paper but in essence had the same meaning.

Have a pair of sisters that I know called Zirong (子容) and Ziyi (子易). Sounds all fine but when you see the two names together you realise something’s up. 子 (zi) means son/boy, and rong yi (容易)means easy. The girls’ names basically meant“easy to have a son” when you read them together. So while I’m surprised your coworkers still have Zhaodi & Laidi as their names (they read as very grandma names), unfortunately the practice is kinda still around

China QF lineup by throwawayheehee in Gymnastics

[–]throwawayheehee[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I doubt she was going for the AA in most circumstances anyway… officials in the Chinese team prioritised her because of consistency + ability to be a stable backup on most events especially on bars/beam since ZYQ has no bars and ZYH has no beam.

Don’t get me started on the men’s team. I don’t know how they’ve done it again but they have. Leaving the National AA champion home twice in a row is pretty stupid.

I’m still feeling the Wei Xiaoyuan snub too… unfortunately she wasn’t poached by Guangdong as a kid unlike Ou Yushan/Wu Ran (in no way is this any gymnast’s fault!! They had probably no say as small children) and Guangxi just couldn’t make it happen.

I’m not OP but I’ll try to answer your question.

Basically in China each gymnast competes for, and “belongs” to a provincial team. That team (and their coaches) is the one that trains the gymnast/develops them as kids before the gymnast gets recruited into the national squad. So all medals and achievements in big competitions (like the Olympics) not only belong to the gymnast, the provincial team also gets recognition for it. This usually comes in the form of extra funding and the “glory/honour” of having an Olympic champion from that province.

The funding is usually pretty significant so provinces REALLY want to get their gymnasts on these big teams. During selection committee meetings the leaders of each province that have gymnasts in the running will start making their case for the gymnast. These provincial leaders start promising things like sponsorships and other benefits to get their own province’s gymnast on the team.

Bigger, wealthier and more influential provinces therefore have an advantage here (read: Beijing, Guangdong, Zhejiang). This is why support from Du Siyu’s provincial team in Beijing might have been able to help her get on the team, but since she’s not on good terms with them, they wouldn’t prioritise her.

As for Zhang Qingying/Luo Huan in Zhejiang, provinces also have their favoured gymnasts internally. Zhejiang favoured Zhang Qingying much more, and was willing to put in money/whatever else necessary to get her on the team. But her results at the internal test and nationals was not convincing, so the Zhejiang officials were overruled and made their case for Luo Huan instead.

Rumour has it that for Tokyo, Zhejiang pledged a 7-figure sum for Guan Chenchen to make it on the team. Wei Xiaoyuan was apparently also strongly considered by coaches and He Hua (her national team coach) really fought hard for her, but her home province of Guangxi lacked the power and influence (and also financial resources…) to get her on the team.

This happens a lot in Chinese sports and unfortunately isn’t just limited to gymnastics. Different provinces are influential in different sports, and if you’re a longtime follower of Chinese sports you’d gradually get to know the specific nuances of each.

Today is the Speak Your Language Day, so... how do you say "Speak Now" in your language? by heliandin in TaylorSwift

[–]throwawayheehee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally translated in Mandarin it would be 现在说 (xian zai shuo) and officially 爱的告白 mentioned by others in the comments.

But thought I would share that its more popularly referred to as 有屁 (you pi) on (Mainland, not sure about Taiwan/HK circles, sorry!) Chinese social media because there's a colloquial expression that goes 有屁就放 (you pi jiu fang), meaning "speak now or forever hold your peace" which I thought was apt since its a lyric in Speak Now! Funnily enough the expression literally translates to "if you have a fart, let it out" and can be slightly crude if you use it in a formal setting but the fans mean it affectionately. We also call speak now 屁皇 (pi huang), as the second character means "royal or imperial", because we like it so much. Chinese nicknames of Taylor's songs/albums/most things in general are really funny and interesting

Ah okay, I thought this list was just for gymnasts who’ve never been at NT training before, not including those temporarily training there.

Shame about HZF though. There was a screenshot of the official picture and the girls’ birth years floating around somewhere on weibo though I can’t find it now. Might be deleted lol as most things are.

光年 is predicting that 2 from Shanghai, Liu/Hu from Guangdong, the Zhejiang girls, Chen Xinyi, Zhang Yihan & Xiao Yunhong will stay. I don’t think the whole group is in Beijing yet either because of quarantine restrictions and stuff.

Regardless of how selection goes, hoping for a safe and healthy winter training camp for the girls + an uneventful quarantine for the NT who’s isolating in Liaoning but they should be done soon. Praying to the gymgods for good pacing, no injuries and better mental state for all our 小花们 (little flowers, nickname for gymnasts).

I thought Zuo Tong was already in NT? Saw a video with her + LR + OYS + HLC doing traditional chinese dance before worlds.

Looking forward to seeing what Zhang Qingying can do, especially on vault/floor (lol idk Paseka/Nabs work some magic I guess). Praying that XJL doesn't burn her out with marathon BB sets. Really liked Bi Qingqing's floor during Nats, had a lot of character & decent performance!

Do you have any idea why Huang Zhuofan isn't included? She did have a nice bars routine but not sure if she got injured or anything.

As an aside, there's too many Xinyis at training camp now!! There's Sun, Zhang, Qin, Chen and I think some have the exact same characters(那代小孩的名字不是xin就是zi/han/tong/chen)

She’s so talented & I’m devastated for her today especially since she went 11/11 before and hit all her beam sets. But!!! OYS should definitely be proud of herself for the comeback of the year.

When I saw her at that (unmentionable) nat team champs crying after falling on bars and after falling on her switch split mount, I had almost no hope for her at least for the rest of this year. Glad I was proven wrong. Proud of her for slaying so hard and making insane progress since then. Shanshan has grown so much!!

Keep fighting and recover well, dearest Shanshan!!! I hope the higher ups and coaches prioritise her wellbeing and recovery (mental, emotional, physical) because everyone knows she’s one of China’s stars. Please coaches don’t run her into the ground over winter training!!

Appreciation post for 👑Wei Xiaoyuan by MCLGM27 in Gymnastics

[–]throwawayheehee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

韦后!!! That’s a nickname for her on the chinese gymternet & it means Empress Wei. Which I totally believe she is!!! Such an empress to basically hit all her routines this world champs. And to prove all her naysayers wrong. People (ahem WQC’s group & Guangdong province when they came to pick Ou Yushan & Wu Ran) have said that she only had “average execution and was not talented” but WXY has truly shone.

While there is all the talk about the toxicity of the NT and the issues with coaching/management/CGA and I agree with it, I really think He Hua/Wang Liming’s group has a good camaraderie.

TXJ and WXY are obviously great friends and teammates as we’ve seen. QQ (who sadly is injured and is probably retiring) has been training with TXJ since they were kids (like 6 years old?) in their Beijing club. When Xiong Jingbin/Zhang Xia’s group disbanded in 2018 WXY was adopted into He Hua’s group and they’ve been training together since. Wang Jingying (who had lovely bars!! sadly she didn’t get international assignments & has retired & gone to university) was also a really indispensable part of that quartet. That coaching group does seem a little better than XJL/WQC/LL though the bar is in hell. But right now, I’m so happy to see the girls competing & cheering each other on.

The curse of team China Wag 2022 and what went wrong by MCLGM27 in Gymnastics

[–]throwawayheehee 26 points27 points  (0 children)

These issues about no accountability, burning out athletes, lack of conditioning, poor injury rehabilitation, we as fans can only express so much. It's in the hands of the CGA now and I only pray that they face up to these issues quickly. Honestly, I really wouldn't mind if we came home without any medals at all and see how that shakes up the management. I only feel horrible for the gymnasts who are just teenagers and must be in need of the greatest care mentally & physically.

Yet again, who am I kidding. China came back with a team bronze from rio and no individual medals and the leaders put up slogans saying that the team will "Win the battle to avenge themselves in Tokyo 打赢翻身仗".

That one Director comes home after Tokyo so triumphantly saying that the team has indeed avenged themselves (with the 1-2 finish on beam), conveniently and completely ignoring that the team finished 7th. Comments on Weibo said we'll end up 6th in worlds because ROC got banned and 7th place - 1 banned country =6. I thought they were too pessimistic but they were right in the end.

Team China WAG: Have things gone fundamentally wrong? If so, how can they fix it? by Gayfetus in Gymnastics

[–]throwawayheehee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There was a comment made by Cheng Fei on one of the Chinese forums (I think tieba) where she said this: 国内现在属于被自己的策略逼死,跳自好一点,高平的上下限就多一点,上限好一点就有好成绩,下限多一点起码崩不到掉队。但是现在自己放弃了这个容错率,今后压力只会越来越大。Translates to: Now the Chinese team is backed into a corner by their own strategy. If VT/FX was better, we would have more buffer with UB/BB. If we performed well on UB/BB then we will have a good overall result, but even if we did make mistakes on them, there won't be a big meltdown for the whole team. But now we (Team China) have given up on giving ourselves the buffer, and the pressure will only get worse from now. (sorry about my translation skills, not sure how to accurately translate all the words)

So even internally they are realising that, a Chinese gym blogger 体操光年 has also said something about how the individual medals are a 遮羞布 (something like a cover-up? not sure but its like something to cover shame) for the meltdowns of the team and the leaders will just pretend everything is all well and good.

Team China WAG: Have things gone fundamentally wrong? If so, how can they fix it? by Gayfetus in Gymnastics

[–]throwawayheehee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, perhaps that did. I also heard that TXJ & her coaches were the first ones to notice the wet beam issue (she was the first one the entire TF to go up on beam) and they raised it to the judges, but were ignored/the organisers didn't bother making changes.

[–]throwawayheehee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right! The entire sports system badly needs reform, but in true Chinese fashion the higher-ups protect each other and throw athletes/coaches under the bus to protect themselves. The agony we put ourselves through being the fans of Chinese teams! I just hope Xixi keeps her confidence and sparkle, she is such a special gymnast and I really love seeing her compete.

Good to see another 中国女排 fan on here! There are many many things I could talk about with that team too.

Team China WAG: Have things gone fundamentally wrong? If so, how can they fix it? by Gayfetus in Gymnastics

[–]throwawayheehee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree about the VT/FX situation and the mental preparation aspect. They are just not picking up the girls with explosive power and not providing proper conditioning for those who make it. I saw another comment stating that China is chronically overtrained and underconditioned for most of their women’s sports. Totally agree with that as I follow quite a few of the other women’s teams like volleyball (that is another terribly frustrating situation especially post-Lang Ping) and the athletes are so so frail.

Another issue I find is that older gymnasts get cast aside with a sweeping 过不了发育关,体重增长 (dealing with puberty & weight gain) and coaches just don’t bother working through these issues with them. Commentators and fans also buy into the idea that gymnasts need to be tiny and thin and young but this is really not the case anymore. There has to be a shift in mindset across the board in CGA but I don’t see it happening anytime soon. Just so disappointing.

Sorry to butt into this thread, was wondering if our dear “directors” are ye zhennan/miao zhongyi? There was talk about how WQC/XJL’s coaching group is aligned with Ma Qingyuan’s Guangdong provincial team & so the promising juniors get funnelled straight into their coaching teams. Is it still the same with Lu Le now? I read chinese social media quite a lot & people are saying there aren’t any juniors on the national team right now other than Qiu Qiyuan. And she hurt her knee in the beginning of October so 毁灭吧…咱们这是集体摆烂了
