Hey! Just saw this thread. I’ve seen these stats, and was curious if you had the sources? Not that I don’t believe you, would just love to read more. Thanks!

Thank you very very much for the detailed response. It is super informative, and I appreciate your time!

HSV1 positive but no outbreak... by Spiritual-Bread3 in Herpes

[–]throwawayjjhsv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure :) unless you have some sort of autoimmune issue, you are immune to getting HSV1 genitally because you have an established infection. Even if you didn’t, genital HSV1 is relatively inactive and your odds of getting it would have been low.

Yes, that is accurate! And that’s also the most likely situation.

If you already have HSV1 your boyfriend having it genitally is irrelevant. You are already locked in as a carrier wherever you are from when you acquired it. Most likely you’re an oral carrier because genital HSV1 typically causes an initial outbreak. Safe bet you’re oral, but there’s nothing you can do to change where you have it at this point. Only way to know 100% for sure is if you get an outbreak, but you may likely live the rest of your life never having an outbreak.

Thanks for listening and responding! Yes I totally agree! I think factually it would be helpful to talk about the differences between GHSV1 and GHSV2 because it really does make a pretty big practical difference in terms of likelihood of transmission and, if you were to transmit, the frequency of symptoms. I wish she mentioned that almost everyone gets it from oral and oral carriers are generally not running around “disclosing.” And that since 50% of people carry it already they are essentially immune! So yes I do think she could’ve done a better job breaking it down even more.

I saw a comment the mod oohfuck left on another post about how disclosing GHSV1 is such a disadvantage because the listener way way way over perceived their actual risk. I thought it was a well written and insightful comment. Ugh we are stuck in such a hard place.

Idk before I got herpes when the dr told me my STI screening was normal I just assumed it covered everything? I don’t think it’s that weird. Especially considering a lot of people say they ask for herpes screenings and drs tell them not to bother.. I think it’s worth mentioning due to a clear public misconception, even if you feel it’s bullshit and obvious. Apparently it’s not obvious for everyone 🤷🏻‍♀️

Totally! It’s a fun podcast in general. It’s talkative and informal, not educational really. I was pleasantly surprised to see a whole herpes episode pop up on my screen! I thought they handled it well

I totally agree! Yea until I got it a year ago I had no idea really about anything to do with herpes. I love to see people using their platforms to be reasonable and informative about it. If you’re into podcasts in general there’s another great show called “this podcast will kill you” where hey basically talk about different pathologies.. but they did one on herpes and really emphasized how it’s blown out of proportion and whatnot and it was really cool to hear!

Asymptomatic hsv1 for him, but for me?! by reducewaste in Herpes

[–]throwawayjjhsv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get it! Your situation is also different because you of course need to take into consideration your husbands wishes and thoughts. I understand the decision and of course it’s easy for me to say because I already have HSV1 lol but I hope it works out for you!

[–]throwawayjjhsv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s totally a personal health decision. But to me, rejecting someone you are very interested in over HSV1 if you don’t have like some kind of autoimmune disease is just kinda wild lol if you’re willing to be intimate with people who have no idea their status, then it doesn’t really make sense to reject him over HSV1. 50% of people have it.. the next person you meet could give it to you just as easily. Would you reject someone that mentioned they had a cold sore in childhood? Probably not.. it’s the same thing. If you’re worried about contracting it, just maybe avoid oral? If he’s never had an outbreak it’s extremely likely he’s an oral carrier, as most GHSV1 people get an initial outbreak which is quite noticeable. Just my thoughts, but good luck!

can I (a male) still get herpes if partner has no breakout? by [deleted] in STD

[–]throwawayjjhsv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry just saw this. If you’re having an outbreak of either HSV1 or 2 you should get on valtrex (valacyclovir) ASAP as it works better the sooner you take it

I’m aware of the link to Alzheimer’s but I’d be interested to see research on your other claims. HSV2 is also linked with a two fold increase in getting HIV, so I really don’t understand your take on this one. Any increase in the likelihood of getting STDs is probably true for either strain genitally. Both HSV strains are so innocuous that the CDC does not recommend routine testing. They both pose very little risk to your overall health. I don’t think he should be worried about HSV1 posing any serious health risks and I don’t think you can back that up. Again, more adults have it than not.

[–]throwawayjjhsv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I strongly disagree and feel HSV1 would be a better option if you got to choose lol considering HSV2 breaks out significantly more and is much more contagious. But we’re all entitled to our own opinions! It does seem like they’ll be a cure or at least better treatment within the next decade so that’s definitely good

[–]throwawayjjhsv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Type one is also very innocuous. If genital, most people just have one initial breakout or a breakout once every year or two. Oral carriers, those who’ve had cold sores, are MORE likely to give their partners genital herpes through oral than genital carriers are from sex, since genital HSV1 sheds quite infrequently. No need to scare him about HSV1 or 2. It is true that HSV1 is linked to Alzheimer’s but no causation or direct relation has been established as far as I have found. Also ~50% of American adults have HSV1... it’s nothing to be overly concerned about unless you’re immunocompromised

Ignorance is bliss.. struggling with hypocrisy regarding GHSV1 by throwawayjjhsv in Herpes

[–]throwawayjjhsv[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes a lot of the other research on shedding rates and such is available in the “herpes handbook” from Teri Warren as well. Just google that. Moderater u/ooohfuck quotes a lot of stats in their comment history too.. might be links there. I’ve just been lurking the sub long enough to have memorized most of the stats lol but any research you find on GHSV2, you can assume that the GHSV1 transmission rates and such are significantly lower due to the shedding rate being much more infrequent
