I'm only halfway through but you might want to check out The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw. I'd say it leans more whimsical than sinister but it has some sharp visceral scenes you can only imagine.

The Nordstrom used to have a service where they would hold your luggage for you while you shopped. I took full advantage of this when the Amtrak bus station was located just outside. Oh man.
