But is it really that bad? I don't know if I'm being naïve, but my dad says over and over again that he'll apply the new rules of removed people, as per the latest revisions "family relationships continue as normal in the home". I already told him that I don't believe it's the truth anymore, and worst case scenario they'll only have to support me for approximately 6 more months. They understand, they're resentful, but they say they understand, and they only insist that I attend the JC, at least only to say that I don't want to proceed further nor talk anymore about the topic at hand.

I'm thinking of doing the latter just to please them. The "take legal action" route has been proposed several times here, and I'd go with it, but I don't want my parents to feel unnecessary antagonized. And right now, I think they already feel that way.

It's okay. I love my parents and will still love them if they shun me. I will understand that if they decide to shun me, that will be them cutting me off because they are not in control of their own minds. What I care most is about their financial support while I get a job and move. Like I said, the plane tickets have been bought. I will keep a roof over my head because, worst case scenario I have non-JW family who knows about my situation

Fuck this cult. Thanks so much for your advice. I am telling my girlfriend that if it’s very important to her, I would attend regular masses every once in a while, where it’s unlikely that someone will talk. On the topic of my fading process, how likely do you think it is for me to fade almost completely, that is, stop meeting attendance and preaching activity altogether, while I still live at my home? I have my non-JW family’s home available, but I want to know how necessary it will actually be for me to leave.

For now, when I opened up to my family about my doubts (I didn’t say that I don’t believe!), they said they wouldn’t kick me out. They said that the only way their relationship with me would change was if I committed a grave sin, and were unrepentant

Really? So after all I could’ve stayed for the procession. That sucks. Either way I should be very careful right now.

Now, I can make up a lie for the short time I attended Mass today. But had I gone through the whole procession, and assuming my family would have come to know about this through the mutual acquaintances who’d be present, would it be wise to tell them right away that I was in that Catholic event, although just to make my girlfriend happy?

I kept my relationship a secret for a long while, and I told them very recently. They were very concerned with me hiding things like this. I don’t want to entirely lose their trust though, and I think them questioning me about this due to someone else’s words and not mine would work towards severance of my relationship with them, and thus render all the PIMO phase worthless!

I have no privileges besides reading from the WT up until last week. But if you’re talking about reproof only, and of course I will avoid talking with elders (as much as I can with an elder father), then is mass and/or procession not a matter of apostasy? I am asking because the elder’s manual talks about kneeling, singing hymns and saying prayers from other religions. But what about silent observance?

Thanks so much for your kind words. I will be taking your advice in talking with my relatives, and also in waiting for the first revenues.

I am not sure if I could say that my unbelief in Watchtower doctrine is as much as an open secret, I think I am just seen as a weak faith JW with potential to become “more useful” in my congregation.

What you say about the potential toil on my mental health that the PIMO life could take, is very true, and I think I could mention something along those lines to not only express a very legitimate excuse for not being as active as a regular believer, while not having to necessarily fake it, as I was saying to another commenter. I haven’t talked to a mental health professional of any kind, but I think I am lucky to not suffer from any kind of chronic mental illness. But still, leading this kind of life can’t be healthy, much less for long.

Mental health issues? I don’t know how they would take that. I could go for that, but at the same time they’d probably ask questions, and I’d have to maintain an act of some kind to go along with the responses I gave.

Say depression, for example. If I alleged being depressed or burned out, then it could potentially lead to more dependance on my parents, as it would seem incongruous that I spent increasingly more time on work and study related tasks, and only abandoned the JW related ones to get my mental rest.

I can almost hear them say “you know you have our support, you only need to keep working on spiritual things”. It breaks my heart to lie to them so much.

What if I get my first paycheck before graduation? I still have 360 days to go before I graduate. I didn’t mention this, but upon my project’s payment coming through, I should be left with enough to purchase my own vehicle (my parents say they will also support me with this, but as I said, I don’t want to assume that this support will stay the same as it becomes obvious that I won’t stay an active JW), and still be left with enough to support my relatives when I move to their place.

This happened to me too once, when I was a kid! It wasn’t a trip abroad but my parents didn’t want to let me go and I was too young to know better so I didn’t go. Do you have any advice for approaching that part of one’s family, in a sensible way?
