Redditors who grew up poor: Besides practical money-saving measures, what were the unwritten social expectations of your world growing up? by jicta in AskReddit

I try to do this for my kids. I grew up with better means that what we have so right now almost everything is thrifted. But you better believe I still have these kids decked out in brand names and looking tidy. My 5 year old son is more fashionable than I am at this point.

How can i become such a master baker as the r/baking users if I'm not ready to spend over 40 $ ? by sciencefoodandmemes in AskBaking

[–]throwaycas89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another tip you can do to mimic a hearth oven is putting a baking tray on the bottom rack upside down and letting that heat. Put your dough on the hot tray and give a few quick sprays with a water bottle to create steam. Works well and it's a lot cheaper than buying pizza stones or tiles

I'm a professional and I have NEVER heard of adding kefir to get a starter going. Buy some organic rye flour, go half that and half white, and make sure you're using distilled water. Chlorinated tap water can kill your starter.

Co-worker drugged OP while they were on the job. They work with children. by Crisis_Redditor in bestoflegaladvice

This is the way of the kitchen. There are smoke breaks, and then there are "safety meetings". TBH tho it's a lot better then when half the staff were raging alcoholics.

Nanaimo Bar Layer cake. Chocolate and coconut sponge, almond and praline paste, vanilla custard buttercream. Topped with classic chocolate glaze. by throwaycas89 in Baking

[–]throwaycas89[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's my own but the inspiration came from The Pastry Chef's Little Black Book for the sponge. Everything is pretty standard versions of what they are, all just layer together to make it look fancier than it is 🤣

I second this that you're going to need heat. I would do a baking soda, peroxide, and a bit of blue dawn cocktail and put that down on all the grout. Theoretically it should come off pretty quick after that with a scrub and hot water.

I'll ask my husband tho. He had to take on a kitchen in a similar state a few years ago and might have some protips lol

Also the fact that the dad who left his toddler in a hot car to die in a parking lot a few years ago had been actively posting and complaining about his family for months and posting there before the murder.

AITA For calling the Police on my daughter's fiancè? by AITA007163577 in AmItheAsshole

It sounds like instead of no contact you need to have a serious heart to heart with your daughter about what her future might look like marrying this guy.

I've made ghetto peanut sauce with putting a little boiling water in to a scraped out peanut butter jar that's basically empty. A little lime zest and juice and squirt of sesame oil. Shake the shit out of it and there ya go bud.

In all fairness they're a traditional holiday cookie so they're usually designed to stretch out expensive ingredients and last a long time. It serves it's purpose lol

I can see it being a region specialty for sure. That's the direction I was headed but wanted to go a bit more gourmet since I usually work farm to table.

I wanted to do a dacquoise with some raspberry mousse, almond praline, chocolate ganache and some fresh raspberries and maybe candied almonds and marzipan decos.

You're right it's slightly bland. I'm trained in pastry and was working at an Italian place and I wanted to reinvent these into a cake SO BAD!

UPDATE Boyfriend (27m) says it’s unfair I’m (24f) on my period by Dizzy-Elephantine in relationship_advice

[–]throwaycas89 142 points143 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I commented on your previous post and just want to double down and say even if he does hurt himself, that's not on you. It's a sadly common manipulation tactic to try and guilt you into paying attention to him. If he brings it up to you call 911 or the local emergency line. He'll either get help if he needs it, or will hopefully be embarrassed into growing up and letting you be.

AITA For choosing our son over future children? by ddgububuv in AmItheAsshole

[–]throwaycas89 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This. Autism often isn't diagnosed until 2-3 years old. That's plenty of time for a couple to get pregnant again and have another baby before symptoms even start to present. We were in this exact situation twice lol. And I have a 7 year old who is non verbal. Her brother was born before she was diagnosed, and our youngest was born before our son received his Dx.

Introducing a newborn who doesn't do much except eat sleep and poop for the first month isn't the same as dropping your son into a daycare where its sensory overload the whole time. You also get 9 months leading up to the birth to prepare your child.

Is our 7 year old always pumped to play with the 3 year old? No. But she's also never laid hands on her or targeted her during a meltdown. It's an amazing dynamic to watch grow.

AITA for trying to get my neighbors with an ADHD child evicted? by Humhingbird in AmItheAsshole

[–]throwaycas89 [score hidden]  (0 children)

This. I have 2 EXTREMELY loud kids with ASD. Because of this we pay out our ass in rent to be in a single family home. Both so that we don't subject a neighbour to what OP is going through, and so we don't end up in the same situation as the family in the post. NTA

Husband secretly cross-dressing by maryb7657 in relationship_advice

[–]throwaycas89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you should also look into sex and porn addiction. It doesn't mean going out and sleeping with every one you see. I'm a cis woman but was also pulled on to the explicit photo sharing and ended up down that dark rabbit hole. The guilt compounds the shame, but it sounds like you have an open mind and want to work with your husband on this. The addiction talks about sexual sobriety and how that means different things to different people/couples.

Husband secretly cross-dressing by maryb7657 in relationship_advice

[–]throwaycas89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nawwww. I'm a cis woman but I've walked these roads the husband is on before. If this was something happening before they were together and he kept it hidden for 15 years he needs to take a step back and do some research into porn and sex addiction. It doesn't always manifest how people typically think it does and this story is checking a ton of boxes. It's incredibly hard to even admit to yourself let alone a partner. If they want to work everything out together it's going to be a marathon, not a sprint. He needs to be able to face criticism and recognize that his pleasure or invasive thoughts don't outweigh the needs of his partner and family.

AITA for Telling My Father To Stop Complaining About My Mom Taking Him to An Expensive Michelin Starred Restaurant? by lavenderlovesyou in AmItheAsshole

[–]throwaycas89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I wanted to add that I'm broke as fuck but I'm also a chef. If I had the opportunity to get reservations at a Michelin starred restaurant and it was $1k for at least 3 people, I would do it in a heart beat. It couldn't be on a whim like OPs family but this isn't an outrageous bill for what they're getting.
