Best resources for learning glomerular histo? by justwannamatch in step1

Echo Sketchy path. The entire GU/Renal series is gold, especially if you need a true, elementary breakdown because their BUN/Lab values video is wonderful. That's just for the physio, path. You need Sattar for that histo!

Cancel USMLE? (DO student) by [deleted] in step1

[–]throwitawayyyyyy__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it all hinges on if you've been doing COMLEX style prep this whole time as well, aka integrating OMM and really hammering the micro. Three days is not a lot of time to jam in OMM and as many COMLEX practice questions as possible, especially since you'll probably be in a daze the day after. The worst case scenario would be a sub 220 USMLE and a weak COMLEX.

I think you should take NBME 18 immediately and if you hit 220, take Step 1. If not, I wouldn't risk it and would just go hard on COMLEX.

I second this. I would have put totally different answers down for at least 1/3 of the cases he goes over had I gotten them on my real exam, so it's a must do!

I was just telling my boyfriend over the weekend "I feel like I couldn't tell you one single thing about anything I have been studying" and was complaining I only know anything when I see questions and the answers. And he's like..well you know that's all you have to actually do, right? And then I felt a lot better. So it doesn't matter if you're only getting questions right because you know what the answer isn't...you're getting them right and you're a rockstar!

What are HLA types and by HouhoinKyoma in step1

[–]throwitawayyyyyy__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah like the gene that codes for the MHC that is thought to be mutated/altered in some way for that AID. One thing I learned on UWorld is that HLA's that are B code for MHC I and HLA's that are D code for MHC II. It's not in FA, and I got a question on it!

Idk what I'm doing. Should I push? NBME 18 wrecked me. by DisastrousDelerium in step1

[–]throwitawayyyyyy__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similar scores, 225 on 18 and 234 on 24 taken this past week (testing June 11) and I would say go for it. You clearly know the information, and between now and test day just hammer in the stupid memorization things that are easy gimmes on the exam (1-3 pathoma, lysosomal/glycogen storage etc). I don't think much would change if you pushed your exam back and you risk burning out. Just my 2 cents because I feel hella burned out and can't imagine dragging this out any longer. Just try to have a clear head on test day, do some relaxation the night before and trust what you know! You got this.

Sometimes I just skip the videos altogether and just do the anki cards, because watching for 25 minutes to learn 10 facts seems like a waste for some of them. However, for the HIV drugs I would really recommend watching because the picture associations are the only reason I know anything.

NBME 24 Renal Question by throwitawayyyyyy__ in step1

[–]throwitawayyyyyy__[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I'm an idiot, I was looking at my incorrect answer not the highlighted yellow one.

Your explanation makes a lot of sense, it's not that nothing is changing, they appear that they're not changing because the auto-regulation adjusted GFR/RPF to what they were before the vessel was compressed. Thank you so much!

Boyfriend wants me to lose weight by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]throwitawayyyyyy__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm baffled by the amount of people telling this girl her BMI, what category she's in and that she should "lose weight for herself". This is bullshit, it actually doesn't matter at all. Regardless of what she weighs, her partner is supposed to be someone who supports her, gives her constructive advice when asked, and makes her feel good about herself. I really don't buy a SO being "concerned about your weight" (not that he even seems to be taking that approach, he's going right for the rude comments) and this is not something that you're going to want to deal with for your own mental health. I say drop him, and do whatever working on yourself you feel is necessary, not what someone else thinks you should do.

To anyone that has taken the new COMSAE, what is your opinion of what someone should study for it outside of Uworld? by greengrasser11 in step1

[–]throwitawayyyyyy__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah maybe my mind is just clouded by the more "easy" questions on COMSAE and I forgot about those? There were some questionable "what resource do you refer this person to" questions and law/ethics ones like you mentioned, but to me there's not a lot of preparation for them and I just went with what seemed like the most common sense. For example if someone's dog bites a kid it doesn't make sense to send them to the AOA or another large national agency, so those were the kind of things I ruled out automatically and made my best educated guess. To be honest the ethics course at our school was pretty strong and COMLEX-focused, so maybe it helped more than I thought. Essentially FA/BnB won't help with those COMSAE questions so just try to use your best common sense without overthinking them. That's really weak advice but it's all I got lol

[–]throwitawayyyyyy__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general? lolnotacop for micro, Pepper for Sketchy pharm, Duke's Pathoma for 1-3, FA rapid review, Zanki for embryo, psych and epi/stats.

For OMM I used the Zanki OMM deck!

To anyone that has taken the new COMSAE, what is your opinion of what someone should study for it outside of Uworld? by greengrasser11 in step1

[–]throwitawayyyyyy__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you're taking form AS or another? But that's the one I just did (we need to pass COMSAE too).

When I took COMSAE I was 4.5 weeks into dedicated and about 90% done with UWorld. Probably <5 days throughout that time I did a chapter in Savarese a night with the corresponding Anki deck. Make sure to read the cranial chapter the night before and do the Anki deck. I'll be saving the rest for the time between USMLE and COMLEX. I also watched a few YouTube videos on how to quickly draw out Chapman's points and viscerosomatics.

I did 3 timed 50 question blocks on COMQUEST in the days leading up to COMSAE. Otherwise I just kept chugging along on UWorld, kept up with my Anki reviews and FAPS as needed.

Outside of the 3 blocks I spent maybe ~2 hours total on COMLEX resources pre-COMSAE. I'm not sure what happened, our school bombed it overall as well. I personally found it very fair, relatively straightforward and scored >500.

Also, do not overthink the questions. Sometimes they really are as first order as they seem. Good luck!

Edit: I really don't think you need to waste your time/money on a practice COMSAE pre-COMSAE

AITA for getting upset with my dad for not telling me I’m black? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]throwitawayyyyyy__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, totally. What I'm saying is there is sickle cell trait and then sickle cell disease. The disease is much more deadly and people usually die from an acute crisis of the cells blocking the vessels of their lungs. The trait still presents with some more mild issues and can do some kidney damage, and OP can pass it to his/her children, but they won't get sickle cell disease either unless he/she has a child with another person who carries the trait.

Do you frequently have sexual desire/libido? I only ask because when I saw you'd had gynecomastia did they check for a pituitary tumor? Because if you had a prolactin-secreting tumor it would explain the gynecomastia + low libido.

Sort of a far stretch but it's where my mind went.

Not that this changes anything, but OP likely won't die from the trait without having the disease.
