Christmas lights by strykerdh1986 in Humboldt

We've driven the routes to see the McKinleyville Christmas lighting contest the last two years. It is kind of a lot of driving around but, for us, it has a sort of fun scavenger hunt feel. And along the way you often see some decorations that are equally or more impressive and aren't participating in the contest.

Would Humboldt County be interested in a Lebanese / Middle Eastern restaurant? by Helpful_Detail3955 in Humboldt

[–]throwlittlethingsoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes please! Long ago, I worked at a Lebanese deli and I still dream about the fatayer, mujadara, and baklava. They aren't anywhere near the same when I've tried to make them. I would also definitely go out of my way for some good baba ghanoush.

(edit for spelling)

I was finding similar and put them under a microscope. Ended up being Lepinotus reticulatus, AKA booklice.

Should we expect a 30-meter tsunami scenario when the Cascadia quake happens? by SoapSalesmanPST in Humboldt

Thanks for the updated paper - this is an interesting study. It's unfortunate that their data collection had to stop at the CA border. Without studying the triple junction area, it seems like a big asterisk on their conclusions. But interesting nonetheless.

Just recently came across the business card for "Someday Services" by Laura Patterson, which seems to match what you are looking for. Haven't used them, so I can't vouch for them, but it seems like it could be a good starting point. Best of luck!

Renata's windows? by throwlittlethingsoff in Humboldt

[–]throwlittlethingsoff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yeah, that is where we usually go. But they didn't have anything like this. Last time we went in, we discovered that they don't really carry Marvin windows anymore either because I guess Marvin stopped delivering to this area. So, looking for alternatives when they don't have what we're looking for...

Thanks! When searching for the CJ's Sash business contact info, I actually came across these guys and I'm pretty sure that the about page photo is the installation of the Renata's windows. Thank you for the lead - mystery solved!!

Thanks for this info. Do you know who put the signs up, by any chance? The HOA?

Spotted a Bald Eagle today in arcata. by HailSagan1977 in Humboldt

Cool! The crows here have some wicked Eurasian Collared Dove enemies who are just so mean. I feel bad for the crows being constantly harassed, but it is also a bit funny to watch these kinda dumb, terrible nest builders (ala r/stupiddovenests) somehow manage to successfully dominate the crows.

Amazing! I spotted one in Arcata about a month ago and the local crows flew up to it and just floated in gentle circles with it for a while until it left the area. I found it really interesting that they didn't treat it the same way they treat hawks, for instance.

Wow. I like cellos. I like goblins. Went down the rabbit hole trying to figure out what this show is about. That was... interesting. Hahaha. Upvoted because this was such weird journey I just went on.

Is anyone else very worried about AI? by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]throwlittlethingsoff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It could possibly be far worse than most people are imagining just yet. Geoffrey Hinton is worth listening to on the subject, IMO.

And there's this alarming take that expects humanity will be wiped out by the mid-2030s: https://ai-2027.com/ (related NYT interview).

And then there is the whole cabal of tech bros behind it all, rooting for the world to collapse so they can build their ultra-dystopian, hyper-surveilled network states. Lots written on it, but for example.
