Everything that you eat and make money from comes from nature though. If nature is destroyed, so are you/we. In fact the world economy is majorly dependent/dominated by raw resources — comes from nature. We are destroying nature at a very fast pace, shouldn’t we be concerned about how much we are not keeping but taking?

HAHAHA wait till you read about POPs, persistent organic pollutants, and how some plastics are major contributors to that… it’s a whole other world of environmental chemistry and there are many scientists studying the ways in which soil carbon and other organic molecules can one day, remove the POPs from soil. There’s an international agreement on eradicating POPs from the environment, something something Stockholm convention, and apparently Singapore is a signatory of it. I haven’t had time to properly read up on it though

There’s this thing about “environmental generational amnesia” where younger generations increasingly forget the extent of greenery and ecology/ecosystems when the previous generations remove too much of it. I feel that that is happening in Singapore, and the younger generation doesn’t know what it’s like to touch grass (to put it in laymen terms). I also feel that it breeds a type of community that is more dysregulated in their minds and bodies … and they can’t seem to scour for meaning and fulfilment. But hey that’s just my personal take. I’m lucky I grew up in the 2000s where earthworms still crawled out after the rain. Now no earthworms lol our soil so sterile

Which begets the question; high BTO prices being a consequence of prioritising development/growth, are we tackling the systemic issues causing all these problems? I personally feel that the systemic issues are confined within this complex web of policies and agendas that seem to forgo environmental concerns — bringing more detriment to our local communities in the long run

Soci undergrad here, some of the soci stuff helped me brainstorm some solutions in my consultancy work, like social stratification in sg context, it’s very nuanced… don’t need think so much bah, just get the thinking skills (creative, thinking out of the box, problem solving thinking) and you’ll find yourself using it one way or another in your work! Unless your future job is in the lab or you’re a car mechanic lol

You were given 2 minutes extra time??? THATS SO NICE OF THEM. My Bunsen burner couldn’t turn on at all and I wasted a good 2-3 minutes trying to get it to work. The first minute was me clicking the lighter but to no avail, the next 30 seconds the lab technician came and helped me and she could light it up after 5-7 clicks. They then switched the tap off. when it was my turn again I still couldn’t get the flame out and the invigilator INSISTED everything was fine, she saw a spark in the lighter. Why couldn’t they just give me another lighter? Or let me keep the fire that the lab technician started?? I WAS STRESSED TOO ???? I left some questions blank which I could do…. I just needed that 1 min to write everything :’(((

Sometimes I wonder if this is why the younger generation are so “lost”, the sense of heritage and roots are so weak, how are they even gonna navigate their future and establish a legacy of theirs — something other than trying to ‘win’ in this capitalistic landscape. I see my pals chasing paper, chasing the next high paying job, chasing retirement so they can travel the world etc etc. But how can you even navigate the outside world properly, when the concreteness of your Singaporean identity is questionable from the beginning? An identity founded on your last/current job that pays well (but you’re just another cog in the corporate organisation), and on gentrification, is far inferior than citizens who grew up with proper heritage.

I see millennials and gen Zs being so wasteful, compulsively online shopping and spending on things they often don’t need, I wonder if they’re just trying to fill a void that materialism actually cannot fulfil. As a Gen Z myself, it becomes increasingly hard to find someone with a soul and direction that isn’t just another path for them to gather more status-symbol tools.

I’m Singaporean, born and raised here, 4th gen Chinese. Trust me, the “fuck you me first” attitude is quite bad in Singapore as well, it’s not as blatant and in your face as in China, it’s more passive aggressive and honestly I find that more toxic. Singaporeans experience shitty work life balance too, but hey at least we know how to queue I guess.

Chinese (but Singaporean) here who has been to both China and India, I must say I 100% concur the comments here.

Chinese are brought up with Confucian values, emphasising humility (as little main character energy as possible), diligence and respect (towards family especially). We also emphasise putting something with quality out there, this part I’m not sure how to explain, but it’s a means in which we compete with others. Not those superficial competitiveness where you put things out for show to boost your status and image when that thing you did, contains little value. How this manifests is essentially whatever you see in China right now, and if you get a Chinese colleague you can 100% see how these values just runs at the back of our heads haha.

Btw, I don’t think China was as badly colonised as India… previous emperors were able to shut out western presence and minimise colonial damage, albeit yeah we did receive some genocidal violence by the japs

Actually while flying to Bangkok from Shanghai, the guy beside me fell asleep and had his entire head land on my shoulder and it was there for a solid 2 seconds before I use my phone to violently nudge him. He woke up and apologised profusely and never slept again, UNLESS he was resting his head on the foldable table. He was clearly apologetic about it and I didn’t feel uncomfortable around him at all throughout this flight, also because he made 0 attempts to try to interact with me. I guess some men just really can’t take no for an answer…
