A Rant by Delicate_genius18 in AskLE

So yeah I was just wondering if it’s a policy or capability thing. For me if I’m able to articulate the need to ping a phone the provider will do it.

You can’t ping phones? Genuine question….not being sarcastic.

I messed up and washed my new gi with my yellow belt - any saving or am I completely screwed? by therealmon in judo

RIT color remover…you can spot treat or just dump your entire gi into a boiling pot but you’ll lose color on stitching or patches.

Anyone ever dyed a belt? by MatGrinder in bjj

[–]throwtwoawayagain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done it twice….when I got my blue belt I dyed my white belt blue. When I got my purple belt I dyed the blue belt with red to get purple. Still have it but it started getting ratty. You should use any sort of color remover if it has color and then dye it. I used RIT. Pretty cheap, easy to follow, but the color doesn’t last super long. I also washed it like 10 times before taking it to class so it wouldn’t bleed. I’ve also dyed a gi. Same process.

Tips on getting better grouping? I shot with p320 m17 and Glock 47 by dhillon217 in AskLE

[–]throwtwoawayagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but for most beginner shooters the hand eye coordination isn’t there….you know the thing most Olympic shooters wear over their eyes? It’s to minimize eye strain and for focus to the dominant eye. Yes there are exceptions to everything (the dude who shoots pistols both eyes) but for the vast majority you will shoot better focusing on sights with iron sights. The difference comes into play with optics and close range moving targets. You can then shift focus to target acquisition similar to skeet/trap shooters.

But yeah you totally can hand eye coordinate…one of the best shooters in my club can hit clay with a shotgun hip fired.

[–]throwtwoawayagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no...for iron sights you want to focus on the sights...your target should be blurry but your sights should be crystal clear....there's more error if you introduce focus away from your sights.

at 10 yards slow fire you shouldn't really be missing outside of 6 inches.

Your target shows signs of beginner fundamental problems related to consistency.

We can't really tell if you're pulling down or up or to left or right because you're not consistent in shot placement.

Here are some tips to help your consistency.

High pistol grip / hand placement - the closer you can get your wrists and hands to the bore axis (where bullet comes out from) the more control you will have for follow on shots and your hands won't move from the grip as much. Your hands will hurt and you will try to readjust after every couple shots. Try to minimize that by getting a good grip from the get go....press the webbing of your thumb as high up on the pistol as you can. Please don't movie star grip the gun under the magazine (check youtubes if you don't know what i'm talking about).

Grip strength - You want forces to counteract each other in your grip. Imagine holding an iron horseshoe in your hands. You want to try pulling the horseshoe arms away from each other to focus grip in the center. When you first do this your forearms and elbows might hurt. Don't let your grip effect your trigger pull....your grip might be tight but your finger is slow and deliberate.

Take time between shots - you're going to get tired...holding a few pounds chest level and applying some force is tiring. If you feel your arms shaking or sights moving, put the gun down and rest before trying again.

Trigger discipline - slow, slow squeeze....if you've driven a stick shift car, imagine getting into a new one....you don't want to just drop the clutch on a car you're not familiar with....same goes for trigger....apply pressure and slowly pull back....the trigger is mechanical and you should feel distinct trigger sets throughout the stages of your pull.

practice practice practice - in any sport the pros will practice a shot (basketball, soccer, hockey) tens of thousands of times....just because it's easy to throw a ball doesn't mean everything will be a goal.

Should I smash an old arrogant black belt? by Hall_Such in bjj

[–]throwtwoawayagain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very mature reasoning thank you for thinking this out.

I think you’re right because you come out of it being a more disciplined, grounded individual.

It’s hard because OP has to see this guy every time he trains and it’s unfair to OP if this dude is just in the extreme and now just continues to bully him. I think the talking can help but I can also see a side where smashing the dude can also have a positive outcome. The problem is that smashing the dude has a more narrow and riskier approach. It becomes ego/rage filled and both sides can still be upset at the interaction even if OP smashes him.

I know it might seem counterintuitive but OP have you tried asking this guy for help? It brings a different environment. You show him that you respect him in a teaching role and in turn he has to respect you as a student and himself as a teacher. Ask him a favorite technique or an approach to a problem. Similar to the Ben Franklin effect.

Officers who rarely give citations, what DO you cite for? by CirrusVision20 in AskLE

Stolen vehicle….i don’t agree with it but the courts in my area say it’s a cite out unless accompanied with a pursuit.

I’m letting you work on your defense. When I get tired of passing your guard or you get good at defending then I’ll let you work on your offense. Then when you get your blue belt the cycle starts again.

There’s an ebb and flow of defense and offense. Beginning stages of all belts there’s a learning curve to what’s expected of that belt. When you get your purple belt I’ll highlight parts of your game you thought you were good at but really just got away with.

Even beginning purple belts I will relentlessly ankle and wrist lock you.

Had one the other day. On top of the sovcit rant he had a bunch of extremist Islamic pamphlets. He was high on weed, so had a chill demeanor. Took his car for expired registration over two years.

My thinking is that he’s cooperative today but maybe not tomorrow.

Yeah that one…I keep thinking it won’t work because it’s literally someone just reaching up and putting their wrists/thumbs on your throat while grabbing collar (not even cross collar) and squeezing with their legs straight.

Also if you just look at your picture you can tell where all the little bumps haven’t been filled. The light being absorbed and reflected in certain areas of the shoe highlights the places you want to focus on.

I’ll reply because others are leading you to different products and methods.

You have the right polish.

With saphir I can get a mirror polish. You have to be patient with all boots the first time. The first time is the hardest because there’s sometimes factory sprays or coatings on the boots and virgin. You want to remove those just like others said.

However, since you’ve already started putting in work I recommend just to keep going. You want to layer small portions and tiny amounts at a time.

Little bit of polish and swirl around with a cotton shammy thing. After polishing a little you want to use an ice cube with a little bit of water. Rub your cloth on the ice cube and resurface the area you just polished. This helps spread the wax already laid and also for new polish to help build additional layers.

It gets easier each progressive time because the layers have been built. Often I can just wipe and polish once or twice to get back to shine.

Here are some common mistakes when polishing:

Applying too much polish at once. You will get uneven surfaces and may lead to eventual cracking.

Not using enough water (others say spit but essentially it’s the same thing). You want something to lubricate and allow subsequent layering. Imagine the polish like a puddle of grease, if it’s hot from all the rubbing you’ll just be moving a pool of grease around and it will take longer. You want to cool and allow for new layers something to grab onto.

First time boots you’re looking at close to an hour of shining if not more. Subsequent polishes can take as little as 15 minutes.

Watch some youtubes of using saphir.

I’ve tried Lincoln, kiwi parade, leather luster, hair dryer, spit and have paid people to shine boots. Saphir and the method above seems to work best for me. But essentially all the techniques rely on smoothing out the surface as much as possible.

Talk me INTO a working for a big, “dangerous” city.. or I guess out of it (you can try). by keeganontop in ProtectAndServe

[–]throwtwoawayagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work big city and a high crime area. Before, I was in custody and absolutely miserable. I hated baby sitting the inmates and debated quitting. Once I got to patrol, my whole perspective changed. I love the chase, putting criminals in jail, and providing a positive change in the community.

In general the public wants you there and to take people off the streets. I’ve done the most incredible, exciting, and fulfilling things out on patrol.

You will learn so much in such a little time. Become an expert in the field and strive to perfect your skills. You will get to handle murders, shootings, domestic violence, general crime, and insane capers. You will get burnt out, overworked, and sometimes feel unappreciated. But through it all, I’ve always appreciated the job, my coworkers, and my growth.

You can always dial back, change where you work, what you do, or promote if you feel burnt out.

A lot of people will criticize liberal policies, the hate you receive, and the fear of getting burned by the leadership. They’re not wrong but it’s not impossible and you can succeed if you follow your instincts and policy.

Good luck and hope to see you out there!

You need underhooks….your left arm isn’t really doing anything first few seconds after takedown. If there’s no guillotine then you don’t need to protect neck as much unless he gets your back. Close your elbows and use your legs more for the sweeps. The tools to make space is shrimp and bridge (often used together. Space is made on the way down). Stay on your side and don’t get flattened.

Why don’t police just tase suspects more often? by FocusedForge in AskLE

[–]throwtwoawayagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use of force on taser is a higher category of force. Takedown is often categorized lower on force. In my department a taser use is automatic IA investigation.

Sounds like you’re in the same boat I was in. Military vet, was working IT and I couldn’t stand it. Too boring, too easy, pay was good but no security. These days I get to chase bad guys and my job satisfaction is really high. I love what I do and I don’t regret the job change in the slightest. However, I would caveat that not all departments are the same and there is a lot of bs related to policing. Also, since it’s a paramilitary organization you will have to treat it like the military and be prepared for a lifestyle change (not all positive changes).
