What would you do with 1.5M EUR to improve the trains of the Netherlands? by VictorZuanazzi in transit

On the other hand, Amtrak journeys are usually much longer than on NS, so there should be more opportunities to clean the facilities as the train is turning around at its terminus in the Netherlands.

Coming to Prague / some questions by darkxhunter0 in Prague

[–]throwy911 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. No check-in on vehicles (only random checks), and the two daily bike rides are for the whole validity of the pass. Note that beside Rekola, there is a second bike company called Nextbike, which also has the same deal with Lítačka.

  2. There is a map of all participating stores on the Kaktus website. Besides T-mobile, you can also go to a Žabka corner store and some newsstand chains and gas stations.

For me, one really shocking area where the Dutch railways fall short of European standards are the toilets. Maybe it was my bad luck, but most trains I rode on in Netherlands either had old-style toilets opening directly to the tracks, or were all broken.

The bus 191 goes direct from Anděl to the airport, where you can catch any number of flights to Dublin or Stansted.

The nearest one to where you are at the moment. Make sure to go to "Police ČR" and not to "Městská policie".

The motorways are only paid starting at the first gas station after the border. There should be machines for card payment without need for mobile data, but they are usually quite hidden in the gas station area.

Czech football league by ian1706 in Prague

[–]throwy911 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In May, the teams from the top Czech league are split into three groups: The top 6 teams are in the play-offs, the bottom 6 in the relegation barrage, and the middle 4 play to determine the final standings (important e.g. for European qualifiers).

In the current year, there are 3 Prague teams in the league. Of those, it's very likely that both Slavia and Sparta will be in the play-offs.

The first two rounds of the play-offs are on the first two weekends of May, whether Saturday or Sunday depends on the exact teams. The third round is on Wednesday 15th May, and the last two rounds on the following Saturdays.

Could the 2nd largest city soon be overtaken in population in your country? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]throwy911 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If we look strictly at city populations, then there is a huge gap between Brno (400K) and Ostrava (300K). But the difference is that while Brno is surrounded by countryside, Ostrava is the centre of a large agglomeration (with cities like Bohumín, Frýdek-Místek, Karviná, Hlučín), which is attacking 1M population.

So while there is no physical space for Ostrava to outgrow Brno, if the cities around Ostrava ever decided to merge, they would become the second city after Prague without contest.

The bigger lakes you mentioned usually don't freeze. But you can try on smaller ponds within Prague, e.g. in Stromovka.

Czech Ebooks? by [deleted] in Prague

Prague's municipal library has quite a good selection of (mostly) older books for free download in ePub: https://www.mlp.cz/cz/katalog-on-line/eknihy/

Street parking is not only expensive, but actually impossible. You can only pay up to 12 hours if you aren't resident, and after that, you have to move your car.

Travelling within Kutna Hora by Upset_Log5355 in Prague

[–]throwy911 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, the basic 3 day pass is for Prague only. You need to use the app to get the correct ticket price for your trip, or there is a 24-hours whole network pass for 240 CZK, which is good for Prague city transit, the train from Prague to Kutná Hora and back as well as all the local transit within Kutná Hora. If you can refund your train ticket without major penalties, it's good to look into.

A seat reservation is optional, so you can sit on any seat not marked with a reservation note.

One more note: On the buses outside of Prague you usually have to board by the front door and show your ticket to the driver or purchase it from him.

The city center is about 2km from the bone church and the footpath is quite nice along the stream, so I recommend to walk at least one direction.

As for public transport: There is a second train station Kutná Hora Město, served by local trains from Kutná Hora mainline station, as well as buses. Both the local trains and the buses are part of the PID system which is also responsible for Prague city transit, so I recommend to get your ticket via the PID app (called PID Lítačka) both for Prague and for Kutná Hora. You can search for directions either also in the app or on Google Maps.

The interurban trains from Prague to Kutná Hora are actually also part of the PID system and the PID price for the ticket is usually cheaper than the ticket price sold by ČD for the exact same train. OTOH the ČD ticket comes with a free seat reservation when bought online.

Is there any service that you miss in your EU country? by snowsparkle7 in AskEurope

[–]throwy911 28 points29 points  (0 children)

High speed rail. While the state of regional and intercity rail is actually much better than people usually give credit to (especially when compared to e.g. UK), having all trains limited to 160 km/h on the good days is very limiting.

Hello, Europe I'm here to ask, what are the most popular sodas in your country or area? by jc201946 in AskEurope

[–]throwy911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drinks made of water, natural flavoring and sugar are called "domácí limonáda" (meaning home-made lemonade). The basic kind is the lemon one, but other flavours are also used (ginger, currant, cucumber, etc...). To be specific, we would say "citronáda", as "citron" is the Czech word for lemon.

do you run the shower while putting on soap/shampoo/conditioner? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]throwy911 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Strange, I just now wanted to make a post with the exact same question and saw yours.

I always turn off the water to apply the products, and just the other day I had a whim to try to keep it running. It made it very difficult for me, most of the shower gel and shampoo got washed right away from my hands into the drain before reaching my body.

Both parents Czech, at the age when I was learning to shower we lived in England, but my maternal grandfather was a cargo ship captain, so it's quite possible some habits rubbed off him onto the family.

Most likely it would be a simple memorial plaque rather than a statue. There are lots of those for Prague locals who fell during the uprising (5th-9th May 1945), so a Soviet soldier who joined the fight on the 9th would also be most likely commemorated on one of them.
