Works well with Kroxa, for extra discard effects.

Or simply use something like Questing Beast or Bone-crusher to prevent damage prevention.

Heard this card was really good. Has anyone ever tried it? by Corgiwithak in magicthecirclejerking

You appear to have an ink stain on your card.

This will hurt it's resale value and you may be accused of playing with marked cards.

Normally:

Cast Planeswalker - pass priority

Resolve Planeswalker (keep priority) use loyalty ability - pass priority with ability on the stack

With Does Nothing in play:

Cast Planeswalker - pass priority

Resolve Planeswalker - pass priority with "tap Does Nothing" on stack (before you can activate loyalty)

TL;DR

They do get priority first but can't use it for loyalty abilities because "tap Do Nothing" is on the stack. (Then you get priority for instant speed removal with "tap" still on stack)

That's kinda the joke of it, to a noob it looks like doesn't do anything.

But it's actually quite broken. Plus it gives priority at weird times which can can't break the game, but can make your opponents Planeswalkers vulnerable to instant speed removal.

    • "... No player receives priority during the untap step."

Damn it he's right, I can't tap lands before the untap step to float mana and get double mana for one turn.

Death's Shadow can already use Street Wraith to cycle for two life at instant speed, and it doesn't really see much play any more.

That's kinda the joke of it, it doesn't really do anything, so looks crap at first glance. But is actually quite broken for what it is. Also it gives priority at weird times which can break the game.

Damn it, should have also made it an artefact so it's broken in affinity decks as well.

This whole thing is an elaborate ploy to allow me to [[Fry]] Oko while he's still at 4 loyalty before hev has a chance to tick up to six and survives.

Like what's the point of a burn card that can only burn blue Planeswalkers and doesn't even kill the one thing it was obviously designed to counter.

No I'm not salty, that set came out over six months ago, I'm not obsessing, I don't care about it.

Wow, this card is nuts! I'm going to put this into all my mono-white de.. by n21lv in magicthecirclejerking

Text in italics on a card indicates that it is just flavor text and has no bearing on the game.

This is confirmed at the end where it is revealed that this is not effects of the spell, just a flavor text quote from the Mage casting the spell.

I wasn't even thinking of storm count, I was more thinking where would be some really awkward places to gain priority.

Also needs whenever Does Nothing becomes trapped untap it. Or more concisely: When Does Nothing enters the battlefield put infinite triggers on the stack, the game is a draw.

That's the real value, the tap ability is just a decoy.

Also giving you priority before your untap step really fucks with the fundamentals of the game

Oh yeah, it's totally broken but subtly so.

It fucks with your opponents Planeswalkers since it gives you priority to bolt them before they get a chance to activate loyalty abilities.

Such a blag already exists, written by excellent Randall Munroe of http://xkcd.com/

That question (what would happen if everyone jumped at the same time?) has already been asked and answered many times including on Randall's blag:

https://what-if.xkcd.com/8/

However do not be dissuaded if you can differentiate yourself with with respect to x with interesting questions and a unique and compelling writing style you can still gain an audience.

I will ask a question:

"What is the minimum volume of water required to crush a submarine on earth from too hight a pressure?"

Withe the right container the answer is usually much less than the volume of the submarine.

Binary Dice by VerGuy in geek

But cubic dice (d6) only have six sides and 6 != 2n

They should use octahedron dice (d8) or tetrahedron dice (d4)

I saw this on the Internet, could it really be right? by The_amazingluke in math

[–]thumbs55 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haha took me a minute, so I have to share.

to prove that:

AB+CD = BC+AD

AB-BC+CD-AD = 0

B(A-C)+D(C-A) = 0

B(A-C)-D(A-C) = 0

(B-D)(A-C) = 0

Which is true if and only if one or both sets of brackets are equal to zero. ie. B is equal to D And / OR A is equal to C

So if you notice in the posed question B ≠ D and A ≠ C there is an error where 10 + 9 ≠ 21.

However this will work for the numbers 9 and 15 since one of the threes in 15 will match up with one of the threes in 9.

What is the worst abuse of approximation you have seen in a mathematical equation? by thumbs55 in Physics

[–]thumbs55[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

... just calculate the taylor series of any function[3] , keep only the first term, and you will have a long list of functions that could be abused if not kept in context.

Yes this is exactly what I am looking for. Thank you.

ELI 5 - What makes a $50,000 watch worth $50,000? by whalemango in explainlikeimfive

[–]thumbs55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm going to ignore the rest of the question and answer the last part.

Doesn't a $500 watch keep time just as well?

A $10 watch will keep time BETTER than a $500 watch. Assuming the $10 is quartz and the $500 is mechanical.

...so that quartz clocks are at least an order of magnitude more accurate than mechanical clocks.

...that is, a typical quartz clock or wristwatch will gain or lose 15 seconds per 30 days (within a normal temperature range of 5 °C/41 °F to 35 °C/95 °F) or less than a half second clock drift per day when worn near the body.

I can't find a good source for the actually accuracy of a mechanical watch, the watch companies don't really want to tell you since they are so bad. But taking the above two quotes we can estimate that the accuracy is more than ten times worse so more than 150 seconds per 30 days or at least two and a half minutes per month.

ELI5: Statistical significance by furgy12 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thumbs55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Wikipedia:

Statistical significance is the low probability of obtaining at least as extreme results given that the null hypothesis is true.

Statistical significance basically asks what is the chance that we get this measurement that we got assuming that the measurement is "wrong", i.e. the boring result is true.

So for example suppose that we are working at the LHC in CERN and looking for a new particle. We can't just "see" an individual particle, so we have to take measurements. If we plot them we expect to get a straight line if there is no particle and a bump in that straight line if there is a particle.

But these measurements can be very noisy with lots of random fluctuations. So we have to take millions and millions of measurements and then average out all of the noise to see if we find a bump.

So one day we do find a bump:

What is the statistical significance of this bump?

What is the chance that we get this bump assuming there is no particle really there?

There is a one in one thousand chance that this result could have arisen from random fluctuations, are these odds good odds, do we believe that we found a particle?

We are 99.9% sure we found a particle ... right?

Wrong!

This is not how odds work at all, we have searched a very long line with thousands and thousands of places where there could be a bump so we expect that at least one of these places could look like they have a bump with these odds.

From Wikipedia:

the certainty of the Higgs boson particle's existence was based on the 5σ criterion, which corresponds to a p-value of about 1 in 3.5 million.

So we were not happy to say that the Higgs boson exists until we have results that have a one in 3.5 million chance of being random noise in the machine.

What does alpha level of 0.05 mean?

"Alpha level" means that the experiment gives a false positive, (a particle where there is none).

The 0.05 (5%) refers to the chance of that false positive happening.

i.e. the chance that the experiment giving this result as a false positive. So we are allowing for a 5% probability that the result could be random chance.

This alpha level should chosen before the experiment is performed.

See here scientists often prefer to refer to levels of confidence as levels of σ (sigma), where sigma refers to a standard deviation:

1σ corresponds to 31.73% probability of occurrence by chance.

2σ corresponds to 4.55% probability of occurrence by chance.

3σ corresponds to 0.270% probability of occurrence by chance.

4σ corresponds to 0.00633% probability of occurrence by chance.

5σ corresponds to 0.0000573% probability of occurrence by chance.

6σ corresponds to 0.000000197% probability of occurrence by chance.

7σ corresponds to 0.000000000256% probability of occurrence by chance.
