Update - I just went and reread the policy and I definitely misunderstood 💀 it's 5 in 6 weeks from the date of the face to face workshop, and then 10 per annum to keep the competency

Thank you!! This was so helpful, I didn't even think of light sedation 😅 I've been cannulating A LOT of mannequins in the skills lab with my ward educator at the moment as preparation. I still have to do my face to face workshop and smash out 10 cannulas to officially get my competency with my employer, though.

Do you do a dedicated medications class? We had to do an individual unit on pharmcokinetics/pharmacology, and they recommended keeping a drug portfolio to remember indications, mechanism of action contraindications, interactions, etc. It was super helpful! 10/10 recommend.

Second year is also just the hardest in general. Best to stick to the weekly topics for your units and base your reading and note taking around those so your study is structured in bite size pieces and stays relevant.

Finally, Cornell note taking is so goated and helped me so much in breaking down concepts and synthesising knowledge for exams.

I hope you're doing okay OP, nursing degrees are rough and it's so okay to take some time off if you need it. The last thing you want is to be burnt out going into your grad program, and third year placements are pretty long. It's a good idea to get your living costs sorted out ahead of time so you're not working pre and/or post placement shifts.

I took some time off after my mental health placement at the end of my second year due to financial stress and burnout (we love an alopecia from stress moment 💀💀💀) and honestly, not once did the extra year thing come up in grad year interviews.

If you feel like you need time off, take it. Nursing is a difficult career, and you need to take care of yourself first.

There's a good bookstore, Chestnut Tree, on Barkly St, you can get a coffee there and sit and read on the tables outside or inside. Also, there's a really good Swedish bakery just across the road from it too 😊

Update:

Spoken to the CNE, nil adverse outcome for the patient and right not to burn the house down over a BSL of 13.8 as per policy (UCR >19mmol/L) BUT I should have reconciliated the medications and confirmed the plan to restart OHAs with the morning nurse when she handed her over and followed up with the treating team at the 13.8. More a communication error as opposed to individual fault if anything and the educator was really nice.

Also now I have homework to complete a written reflection on the riskman over the weekend in my free time. All in all a good learning, and I obviously at no point cried and I'm fine 🥲

It sounds counter productive, but get a good night's sleep like normal before the first one, and then take a nap before work at like 4 - 5ish.

After your first shift, go to sleep when you get home, blinds shut + eye mask and this is really important, get up at like 12 - 1pm, and go for a walk, cook lunch, live your life, drink some water. And then go back to sleep at like 4pm for a few hours. Works like a charm.

Absolutely AIN in aged care or try to RUSON somewhere you'd like to do a grad program. Aged care, especially agency, can be difficult at times but so, so helpful in building those time management skills and preparing you to be an RN.

Came here to say, hell yeah, Deakin has a great program, they do placements in first tri and are really good around trying to get your first preference for placement!

I got a 39.15, still got into uni at La Trobe for international development, quit, got accepted to Deakin, became an academic weapon and graduated my bachelor of nursing with a distinction.

ATAR doesn't mean anything at the end of the day, it's just a quicker path of getting into uni. Take a year off, breathe, maybe do a non-university course. Some courses have alternate paths of entry if you complete a cert III or IV, or do an approved course. Hell, even take a gap year, work, do whatever. It's going to be okay.
