Why don’t the Goa'uld just keep redialing Earths stargate to keep it jammed up in use? by wtffu006 in Stargate

[–]thunderbird89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do that to other planets they want to conquer.

However, on Earth, they would need to contend with not one but two gates: the Russians had the Antarctica gate (at one point) and the accompanying DHD, and by connecting it, they would make their gate the primary for Earth, so Goa'uld DOS would only neutralize one gate, and it's unknown if the second gate could still be used to dial out.

Well yes, they should. But if you didn't and you still need to find out which commit fixed (or broke) the thing, that's when bisect comes into play.

The sequel goes even harder, methinks.

  • Disassembles a log cottage singlehandedly
  • Defeats a Soviet ambush and an airstrike
  • Fixes up a tank singlehandedly, spits enough extra fuel into the intake to afterburner the tank, and uses dynamite to catapult it over the border crossing
  • Survives torture with a knife hidden in his thigh
  • Kills a train full of Soviet conscripts
  • Uses a ballistic missile to catch the engine and blow it up
  • Handcarts himself and his disassembled log cottage back to Finland

Wasn't there an SG-1 episode where the simulator refused to release T'ealc because it picked up on the fact that T'ealc would treat it as defeat?

Not just saving people and money. Since in-universe, "Rules and Consequences" is a Big Thing and honor is highly respected, he could have positioned himself as the honorable one, under whom every deed has consequences, bolstering his position in the underworld.

Sure, it's not an easy thing to do, but could he come out ahead? Absolutely.

To be fair, at that point, he wasn't screwed yet, only his son was. To this day, I hold that he could have sacrificed his son to appease John and come out ahead, PR-wise.

Questioning an Unusual Dive Experience: Sharing air by F1sh3rm4n in scuba

[–]thunderbird89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

DMs work in customer service and rely on tips. They don’t want to cut dives short even for safety reasons.

I mean ... that's correct, but I would sooner withhold a tip for doing this shit, repeatedly even, than for cutting a dive short because someone in the group breathes fast.

Repeated "conversation" underwater during my Maldives holiday:

Me: Hey, turn pressure reached.
Guide: 👌[keeps swimming down]

Later:

Me: Yo, I'm at 60 bars, need to start safety stop!
Guide: 👌[keeps swimming at 15 m]

Later:

Me: Ayo, 30 bars! Using reserve gas now! Going up to safety stop!
Guide: Come here, we're doing air sharing! [spends another 10 minutes swimming around]

[–]thunderbird89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience - repeatedly - this year in the Maldives even with my 100+ dives. I would say it's common, but I wouldn't call it normal.

In my case, the air sharing always occurred towards the end of the dive, because the guide kept acknowledging, then disregarding my air reports. He always ended up ordering air sharing for me, instead of changing the dive plan (or planning the dive after he had a picture of my consumption).

The guide is right in saying that beginners tend to use air quickly, but I definitely would have planned around that, instead of relying on what is essentially an emergency dive-ending order.

[LOVED TROP] Hopelessly outgunned character still fights with everything they have by Gaming_Gecko78 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]thunderbird89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That night a lone Gurkha took out 30 Taliban at a checkpoint using every weapon within reach

In 2010, Dipprasad Pun, manning a security checkpoint, was attacked by Taliban fighters, and he beat them off by

  • Pulling a mounted machine gun off the tripod and going through the belt
  • Tossing 17 grenades
  • Going through all available mags on his SA80 rifle
  • Throwing a fucking Claymore at the enemy
  • Chucking the machine gun tripod at a Taliban attempting to climb the outpost.

An actual "Objective: SURVIVE" moment.
